 Ahead By a Century
The Tragically Hip are the finest rock band that our "neighbors to the north" have ever produced. They combine the powerful, bluesy swagger of the Rolling Stones with the cryptic lyrics and compelling melodies of R.E.M. and come up with something unique and beautiful. "Trouble at the Henhouse" is generally considered a very good but not great disc by The Hip's standards. "Ahead By a Century" is the standout track, a huge hit in Canada and a mesmerizing song. The rest of the disc never quite rises to that standard but remains consistantly compelling. This band is absolutely worshipped up north; they inspire the kind of respectful devotion in Canada that only Springsteen has accomplished in America. They have also produced two discs that can only be described as rock n roll masterpieces: "Fully Completely" and "Day for Night". These are truly amazing discs and it is astounding that they have not caught on in the States. That CD Universe chooses to carry such lesser efforts as their self-titled debut EP and not these gems is tragic, but not too hip.
