For a band who only released three albums in their lifetime, the Stooges left behind a whole lot of scraps, wreckage, and unfinished business. There are literally dozens of discs which have emerged in the years since the band's inglorious collapse which document live shows, rehearsals, studio outtakes, alternate mixes, and various other Stooges audio fragments, and the really remarkable part is nearly all of it stems from the James Williamson era of the band, 1972 through 1974, when the band recorded the Raw Power album before eventually lurching to a halt. (The exhaustive box set 1970: The Complete Fun House Sessions is perhaps the only major archeological find unearthed from the earlier Ron Asheton edition of the Stooges). Separating the wheat from the chaff in the strange netherworld of Stooges arcania is no easy task, but that's what the folks who compiled Penetration have set out to do, pulling together the best known and most useful selections from the latter days of the Stooges and the dawning of Iggy Pop's solo career. Since the vast majority of this stuff wasn't necessarily meant for release in the first place, Penetration suffers from the same pitfalls of most posthumous Stooges releases -- namely dodgy sound and uneven material -- but at very least this set gives the material a more intelligent and logical context than it has had in the past, and most of the real high points of this era are represented. Included are a few of the infamous alternate mixes of Raw Power that Iggy aired on a Detroit radio station, demos for "I've Got a Right," "I'm Sick of You," and "Scene of the Crime," a live take of "Raw Power" that actually doesn't sound like crap, a sloppy studio jam called "Jesus Loves the Stooges," and nearly all the material from Kill City, Williamson's first attempt to make a solo album for Iggy (which didn't emerge until years after it was recorded). Much of Penetration sounds like a mess, but it's a mess with a genuine sense of historical purpose, and if you're at all interested in this stage of Iggy and the Stooges' career, this is likely the best place to start investigating (and most listeners will never need to search any further). ~ Mark Deming

Penetration
$22.29 Recorded live at Metropolitan Theater, Mexico City, Mexico and Longacre Theater, New York, New York on August 2-4, 1996 and November 20-25, 1995. Includes liner notes by Robert Fripp and Trey Gunn.
From the mid-'90s on, a steady stream of archival live King Crimson recordings began to appear, released by Crimson guitarist/leader Robert Fripp as the backbone of his independent cottage industry. This thicket of albums can be an intimidating proposition for the uninitiated, even though each one bears its own distinctive charms. For historical context, let's note that VROOOM VROOOM's two discs feature material from two separate stints in 1995 and '96 during which the band was exploring the "double quartet" concept. This format added second drummer Pat Mastelotto and "touch guitar" player (its nearest relative being Tony Levin's Chapman Stick) to the four-man lineup that led Crimson's '80s return ...

| | Robin Trower Seven Moons CD (2008) Digipak
Penetration
$12.89 Jack Bruce must have enjoyed his 2005 get-together with Cream so much that, when Clapton and Baker were unwilling to continue the collaboration, he rang up Robin Trower to renew the brief power trio fling they had in the mid-'80s. The Trower-Bruce pairing had released only two albums, B.L.T. and Truce, and was dormant since 1982, so this 2007 reunion was somewhat of a continuation of the project, albeit one separated by a quarter ...

| | David Byrne CD (1994)
Penetration
$15.49 David Byrne's curiosity knows no bounds. As frontman and principal songwriter for the Talking Heads, Byrne's creative outreach encompassed the best aspects of new wave rock, rootsy funk and exploratory electronics. Together with the Heads and producer Brian Eno, Byrne brought African music and sounds from around the globe into common usage. And as leader of an all-star Latin big band, Byrne sought to reveal the mystery and majesty of Afro-Cuban music to a wider audience.
For DAVID BYRNE, the songwriter distills his pan-cultural focus into the kind of stripped-down musical stylings and enigmatic, quirky narratives that made his formative work with the Talking Heads so fascinating. From the ominous opening beats of "A Long Time Ago," the album reprises the singer's concerns with spiritual transformation and renewal in an increasingly hostile world. "I can barely touch my own self/how could I touch someone else?/I am just an advertisement/For a version of myself," he preaches on "Angels," a sort of end-of-the-west/Waiting ...
