| | King Crimson Vroom Vroom CDs (2001) (Import)
Penetration CD music
$23.39 Recorded live at Metropolitan Theater, Mexico City, Mexico and Longacre Theater, New York, New York on August 2-4, 1996 and November 20-25, 1995. Includes liner notes by Robert Fripp and Trey Gunn.
From the mid-'90s on, a steady stream of archival live King Crimson recordings began to appear, released by Crimson guitarist/leader Robert Fripp as the backbone of his independent cottage industry. This thicket of albums can be an intimidating proposition for the uninitiated, even though each one bears its own distinctive charms. For historical context, let's note that VROOOM VROOOM's two discs feature material from two separate stints in 1995 and '96 during which the band was exploring the "double quartet" concept. This format added second drummer Pat Mastelotto and "touch guitar" player (its nearest relative being Tony Levin's Chapman Stick) to the four-man lineup that led Crimson's '80s return to action.
While the necessity of these additions is sometimes questionable and/or inaudible, all members hold their own in the complex, gamelan-influenced latticework that the '80s Crimson inaugurated. The set lists are largely split between contemporary offerings and highlights from the ...

| | Foreigner Agent Provocateur CD (1984) Remastered
Penetration songs
$5.55 Synthesizers were pushed more up front for Foreigner's 1984 release, AGENT PROVOCATEUR, and it scored the band another monster hit. Just about every radio-oriented rock band of the mid-80's took the synth plunge at one point or another (with varying degrees of success), but Foreigner did not foresake their talent for penning anthemic love songs and rockers. This was proven by one of their biggest all-time hits, the ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is," which also turned out to be one of the year's top singles as well, while "Love in Vain" and "That was Yesterday" proved that the boys could still rock with the best of them.

| | David Byrne CD (1994)
Penetration album
$15.89 David Byrne's curiosity knows no bounds. As frontman and principal songwriter for the Talking Heads, Byrne's creative outreach encompassed the best aspects of new wave rock, rootsy funk and exploratory electronics. Together with the Heads and producer Brian Eno, Byrne brought African music and sounds from around the globe into common usage. And as leader of an all-star Latin big band, Byrne sought to reveal the mystery and majesty of Afro-Cuban music to a wider audience.
For DAVID BYRNE, the songwriter distills his pan-cultural focus into the kind of stripped-down musical stylings and enigmatic, quirky narratives that made his formative work with the Talking Heads so fascinating. From the ominous opening beats of "A Long Time Ago," the album reprises the singer's concerns with spiritual transformation and renewal in an increasingly hostile world. "I can barely touch my own self/how could I touch someone else?/I am just an advertisement/For a version of myself," he preaches on "Angels," a sort of end-of-the-west/Waiting For Godot epic.
Speaking more from the heart and less from the head than on previous recordings, songs like the hard-driving "Crash," the moody "A Self-Made Man" and the dancing "Back In The Box" explore themes of insecurity, self-pride and escapism respectively, while "My Love Is You" is one of the simplest, most tender love songs Byrne's ever penned. "You & Eye" is Byrne's humorous reply to his early Heads' song "Heaven," and portrays Hell as a necessary antecedent, over an infectious soukous groove. The concluding "Strange Ritual" and "Buck Naked" portray spirituality as both a potentiallly insular experience, and a child-like act of sharing and surrender. Byrne once told a writer, "I don't always know what I'm talking about, but I know if a word is ...
