Riddlin' Kids' sophomore full-length arrives a full two years after Hurry up and Wait, and finds the Austin combo expanding from the slick pop-punk of their first effort. Their harmonies are still in place for Stop the World, and loud guitars are generally the rule. But in conjunction with producers Chuck Gladfelter (ex of Dovetail Joint) and Paul Ebersold, the Kids have smoothed out their punk influences for a broader rock sound punctuated by big hooks and tingly guitar lines. While "Promise You Anything" and "Get to It" are comparable to the brash, energetic pop-punk of a groups like Simple Plan, "Never Let It Down" and "Talk of the Town" are more pop than anything, suggesting the sound of Chicago's Lucky Boys Confusion. This modified sound suits Riddlin' Kids really well. Clint Baker's voice is versatile enough to rasp or soar, and the band hasn't made any concessions in the rowdy guitar department. Instead they apply both those traits to songs with an emphasis on strong, radio-ready hooks that aren't hemmed in by the pop-punk demographic. Other Stop the World highlights include the driving, '80s rock-inspired "Revenge," the rousing vestiges of hardcore in "Ship Jumper," and the powerful riff of the lead single/title track. World might sound like a mixed bag to some fans, but in the interim since Hurry up and Wait, Riddlin' Kids have found something to give them some definition, and a life beyond pop-punk adolescence. ~ Johnny Loftus

Emma Bunton, better known as Baby Spice of late-1990s British bubblegum band the Spice Girls, emerges in 2001 with a debut featuring 12 tracks of spirited pop out of her former band's playbook.
Emma Bunton's post-Spice Girls solo debut is the most surprising of the lot, as it moves farther afield from the bubblegummy dance-pop of her former band than Melanie C.'s Northern Star or Geri Halliwell's Schizophonic. The single "What Took You So Long?" opens the album on a gliding cushion of acoustic guitars, dreamy keyboards, and laid-back mid-tempo beats, a mix that underpins nearly the entire album. Even the assertive title track (the hook of which is a cleverly bleeped f-word in the chorus, a deliberate move away from the saccharine Baby Spice image) has the relaxed groove and organic feel of a classic early disco single instead of the canned electronic beats of Hi-NRG dance music. Bunton didn't have the best voice in the Spice Girls (that would be Melanie C., with a special nod to Geri Halliwell for getting by on loudmouthed brassiness), but unlike Victoria Beckham and Mel B, she can genuinely sing, albeit sometimes with a thin reediness that's not quite enough for a song like the gospel-inflected "Sunshine on a Rainy Day." Sugarcult's debut album was an energetic slice of alternative-rock-flavored power-pop that also paid passing tribute to the band's Southern California punk-tinged brethren. With PALM TREES AND POWER LINES, the group introduces a more layered, varied sound, while still retaining enough hooks to fill a tackle box. Looking at the cover images of a quartet of tattooed, Orange County-style punk rockers, one might be forgiven for assuming that Bowling for Soup is yet another band of Blink 182 wannabes. While A HANGOVER YOU DON'T DESERVE's chugging guitars, high-pitched vocals, tight playing, and rapid tempos are certainly elements common to the music of the Texas-based combo's Southern California brethren, Bowling for Soup's sharp songwriting places it in a different category altogether.
