The BLADE movies present a murky, night-enshrouded world plagued by vampires and protected by the complex, flawed hero Blade (Wesley Snipes). The third installment of the comic-book-based series, BLADE: TRINITY, features a soundtrack that continues the tradition of assembling an excellent collection of enigmatic musical acts to add to the sinister, action-oriented mood.
Four of the album's first five tracks feature various members of the Wu-Tang Clan (a fitting match considering the collective's rich mythology), starting with the arresting track, "Fatal," by the RZA, one of the best young film composers in the business (GHOST DOG, KILL BILL). The sly "Thirsty" presents one of the last vocal tracks by the incomparable Ol' Dirty Bastard. (ODB passed away shortly before the soundtrack's 2004 release.) The staggeringly bizarre Kool Keith provides a transition, with his morbid hip-hop group Thee Undatakerz, on the pulsating "Party in the Morgue." From there, the record takes a more electronic note, highlighted by the Crystal Method's grinding "Weapons of Mad Distortion." BLADE: TRINITY closes in a more traditional mode with a track from the film's score by Ramin Djawadi, which still mirrors the essence of the richly divergent soundtrack in its dynamic approach.

$13.49 Thunders' classic debut album remains his magnum opus. Recorded after his post-New York Dolls band, the Heartbreakers, imploded, SO ALONE features a surprisingly eclectic bunch of backing musicians. It's not just Thunders' punk cronies; don't be surprised to find ex-Sex Pistols (Paul Cook and Steve Jones) and ex-Small Faces (Steve Marriott) on the same track (a very cool version of "Daddy Rollin' Stone).
It's Thunders album all the way, however, with his sloppy guitar, endearingly nasal vocals, and trash rock roots front and center. The album's masterwork, and Thunders' finest moment, is the aching ballad "You Can't Put Your Arm Around a Memory." However, just about everything here, including "London Boys" ...

The Grateful Dead's self-titled first album contains the main ingredients of the unique musical stew the band would brew over the coming years. Upon its release in March 1967, it brought the musical and philosophical ideals of the freak counter-culture out of the Bay Area and into the ears of mainstream America.
"The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)" is a Summer Of Love anthem nonpareil. "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" shows off the Dead's ability to reinterpret the blues, and Pigpen's natural front-man qualities. The hyperactive rockabilly of Jesse Fuller's "Beat It On Down The Line" and the rearranged traditionals "Sitting On Top Of The World" and "Cold Rain And Snow" are proof that, despite the group's anti-establishment fashions, their lyrical symbols and musical forms were as time-honored as the English folk-tale that provided their name. While the cover of Bonnie Dobson's eerie anti-war epic "Morning Dew" and the women-and-wine rocker "New, New Minglewood Blues" are energetic portrayals of hippie values, the closing number, Noah Lewis's "Viola Lee Blues," is the album's grand, mind-blowing concoction and a highlight. The remastered version's live bonus tracks include some never-recorded garage-rock and blues cuts and a 23-minute "Viola Lee Blues" bearing the first hints of the modal riff at the foundation of Dead milestone "Dark Star."
One of the things that made the Dead such a unique live act was the sheer variety of their influences. The vastness of the musical terrain they covered is well demonstrated on 1971's GRATEFUL DEAD, nicknamed "Skull & Roses" because of its cover art. It captures the band's live sound at a time when their marathon, acid-inspired concerts were swiftly becoming the stuff of legend and earning them legions of new fans.
This set conveys the typical arc of a Dead show. The band could be economical and straightforward, with brisk, ...
