(4 Customer Reviews)
One of country music's classic Christmas albums, LIGHT OF THE STABLE offers a satisfying mix of seasonal favorites and new compositions, all served up by the most compelling guardian of country music tradition, Emmylou Harris. On this 1979 release, Harris is joined by Ricky Skaggs, Albert Lee, Rodney Crowell, James Burton, and Willie Nelson. Needless to say, they provide the stellar support typical of all of Harris' efforts.
On LIGHT OF THE STABLE, Harris somehow manages to put a new twist on Christmas standards like "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "Away in a Manger," and "The First Noel," imbuing them with the sweet sadness of her quavering vocals and spare acoustic settings. Among newer material, Rodney Crowell's "Angel Eyes" stands out, as does the title track (which features backing vocals by Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, and Neil Young). Best of all, however, is the opener, a faithful cover of Tex Logan's bluegrass classic "Christmas Time's A-Coming." Because the record fits so seamlessly into the rest of Harris' recorded work of the era, LIGHT is one of those rare Christmas albums that sounds great all year round.

Emmylou Harris Light Of The Stable Songs Light Of The Stable Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) Great music- but cracked CD case LIGHT OF THE STABLE is a finely crafted CD with beautiful bluegrass influenced arrangements of traditional (and a few non-traditional) Christmas songs. My only complaint is that the CD arrived with a cracked CD case. But the music itself is rich and resonate. Submitted by tomparm (Euless, TX, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A Meaningful Christmas CD This is the kind of Christmas CD that reiterates the true Christmas message. It is performed and produced with self evident care and love. Emmylou's voice is crystal clear, and I would recommend this CD to anyone, not just as a Seasonal CD. The other artistes involved ensure that their contribution enhances an already excellent product. Three Previously Unavailable Tracks Tracks 8, 9, and 12 on this apparently remastered Christmas album are, as far as I can tell, previously unreleased; although I seem to remember "There's a Light" from somewhere. The sound is very fine, production, as always, nearly perfect, and selection just wonderful. Nobody does spiritually oriented American music better than Emmylou Harris, and this is right up there with the very best I've heard. Light Of The Stable
$9.05 On her sixth country album, ROSES IN THE SNOW, Emmylou Harris decided to explore her growing interest in bluegrass music. It was a bold move: first, because bluegrass had traditionally been the exclusive domain of men (Hazel Dickens being the most notable exception to the rule), and second, because it meant breaking with a formula that had served her well on her five previous releases. Harris tilted the odds back in her favor by assembling an all-star supporting cast including Ricky Skaggs, Tony Rice, Jerry Douglas, and the Whites, then selecting--with usual impeccable taste--10 great songs for inclusion on the album.
As one would expect, Harris salutes the masters of bluegrass here, reworking numbers associated with Ralph Stanley ("The Darkest Hour is Just Before the Dawn"), Bill Monroe ("Wayfaring Stranger") and Flatt and Scruggs ("I'll Go Stepping Too"). Digging even further back, she also comes up with, and delivers on, A.P. Carter's "Gold Watch and Chain" and Bill Halley's "Miss the Mississippi and You," both vestiges of recorded music's earliest era. It's ...
| | Emmylou Harris Stumble Into Grace CD (2003)
Light Of The Stable
$12.39 STUMBLE INTO GRACE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album.
Over three decades into a highly successful career as an interpreter of other writers' material, Emmylou Harris beats the odds by releasing her second consecutive album of original compositions. She's had plenty of time to learn from the best, and the lessons gained from digging into the work of writers like Gram Parsons, Leonard Cohen, and Townes Van Zandt can be felt here, even if she can't be expected to equal their mastery. She works again with members of the Spyboy band that helped reinvent Harris's sound on WRECKING BALL, but as on RED DIRT GIRL, the churning, rhythmic feel of the former is underplayed in favor of a gentler, more folkish approach.
Years ago, few could have guessed that one of Harris's most valuable songwriting partners would be a former member of NYC funk-rockers Luscious Jackson, but Jill Cunniff is a worthy weapon in STUMBLE INTO GRACE's arsenal, co-writing the trenchant "Time in Babylon." Other esteemed writing partners include Daniel Lanois, ex-husband Paul Kennerly, and Kate & Anna McGarrigle, but this ultimately ...
| | Emmylou Harris Quarter Moon In A Ten Cent Town CD (1978) Remastered; Reissued
Light Of The Stable
$10.89 Emmylou Harris & The Hot Band: Emmylou Harris (vocals, acoustic guitar); Rodney Crowell (acoustic guitar); Albert Lee (electric guitar); Hank DeVito (pedal steel guitar); Glen D. Hardin (piano); Emory Gordy (bass); John Ware (drums).
All of Emmylou Harris' albums from the '70s and early '80s are flawless gems. But if there is one that rises above the others, then QUARTER MOON IN A TEN CENT TOWN is that album. From song selection to performance and production, MOON is the perfect distillation of Harris' remarkable work during this period. A wonderful duet with Willie Nelson ("One Paper Kid") and guest appearances from Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, and harmonica wizard Mickey Raphael are what puts this album over the top.
At the time of MOON's release, Harris sat atop the country world. She was the genre's most widely respected ...

Light Of The Stable
$17.69 Though Richard Shindell's music has been categorized under the "folk" rubric, that label tells only part of the story. The instrumental skeletons of these songs are built upon plucked acoustic guitar and the lyrics sketch out a world-weary cast of characters with a rare kind of writerly precision, but Shindell isn't afraid to bring electric guitar, driving drums, and Celtic accents into the mix where needed.
The album-opening "Confession," which is bathed ...
