2004's Greatest Hits is not only the first retrospective Neil Young has released since 1977's Decade, it's the first ever single-disc collection of his best-known songs. Greatest Hits offers the basic canon, with no frills and none of Young's trademark idiosyncracies, but ultimately that doesn't matter much, because Greatest Hits has all the songs that every Neil Young fan agrees are his biggest and best: "Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl," "Helpless," "After the Gold Rush," "Southern Man," "Ohio," "The Needle and the Damage Done," "Old Man," "Heart of Gold," "Like a Hurricane." It works as an introduction for the uninitiated and as a concise summary for more casual fans. In other words, it's as good a compilation as it could have been. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

A collection of Neil Young classics! Greatest hits has all of Canada's use to be answer to the American Bob Dylan answer to folk rock music. Young as singer to songwriter he has some pretty good songs from the mid end of the sixties through the seventies. And ever since his comeback in the nineties after leaving the Geffen record label. Which was the eighties had a popularity in the states and here in the Canadian music scene. He's still with us and keeping his music alive today. My favorite songs that I like and remember on here were "Cinnamon Girl", "Southern Man", "Heart Of Gold" and "Old Man". I also like "Harvest Moon" and his duet with David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. That tune was called "Ohio" a single that was a tribute to the U.S. kent state violence shootings event. It's a good music CD and digitally remastered for perfect sound also. Submitted by CDJay (Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 1 found this helpful. Entry Level Collection A good starter for those like me, who have never bought a Neil Young album before. The fan reactions were pretty obvious, as they are for Pink Floyd's "Echoes" etc. No-one is ever going to be completely happy. I'll also bet that half the "fans" that are complaining should have everything on there and probably didn't buy it anyway.
I think this album's done it's job in that, it's got Neil virgins like myself in and possibly made us want to investigate further. It is a greatest hits after all. If you need a starter album with songs that you're familiar with, this is it. Quality is excellent on all fronts.
I got the CD/DVD version and contrary to another review, the DVD is excellent. The sound quality is first rate DVD audio (only 2 channel unfortunately), remixed and remastered to perfection. There's not much to look at, that's true, but it's the audio that's important here. For audiophiles with DVDA capabilities, I'd highly recommend it. Outstanding One Disc Anthology It's impossible to sum up Neil Young with One CD and this collection does not do that, yet for those seeking Great material/Sound and are casual Fans, this Cd can't be topped. It focuses on the Years 1969-71 when Young was Hot as a Pistol, adding the best of His post-HARVEST Tunes...in fact, the first 11 Songs date from 69-71, while the final 5 span a period of 17 years...I appreciate the compilers focus on the Best Stuff, avoiding the often-seen move of putting on, say, 2 songs from each CD release, and thereby getting a lot of filler...Buy this One, but don't throw away DECADE... greatest? I gotta tell ya, I don't even own this album although I got all the tunes on it and I've been Neil's fan for years and years, but it is IMPOSSIBLE to make a greatest hits package out of his career. It is LITERALLY MINDBOGGLING to tackle a project such as sequencing a Neil Young "best of"-I don't envy the poor guy who was given the task of sequencing this for a minute! This entire set is gold, but there's just so much missing which is easy to comprehend, you just can't fit 30 something albums onto one compact disc, that's a given. I don't blame Reprise for a minute for cashing in on a package like this, but I'm just stating my view on Neil's material...there is no equal to him, nowhere, you have to appreciate the full scope of each individual album if you are to truly get a grasp of what message he is trying to convey to the listener at any given stage in his career...I mean this guy is just a chameleon of sound it's unbelievable-for anyone who has never heard Neil Young at all before, I would sincerely recommend a few live sets from each stage in his career just to highlight each part if you're looking for your first intro to Neil Young-Massey Hall, Live Rust, Weld, Unplugged, this will give you a little bit of everything...but come on, you're gonna end up buying ALL of his albums eventually, that's a given if you become a true Neil fan, I gurantee it!!
