During the filming of tour rehearsals that followed the release of Eric Clapton's acclaimed ME AND MR. JOHNSON, bassist Nathan East jokingly noted that many of the band's performances were "better than on the album." Clapton's longtime low-ender may have been right, as the resultant SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J provides the best of both worlds--the freshness of live interaction and the sound quality of a studio album.
The differences between the two discs are sometimes striking, but often subtle. Clapton's vocals on "Milkcow's Calf Blues" are more forceful, Billy Preston's organ stabs on "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" just that much funkier. Of course, SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J (which comes paired with a lengthy documentary DVD featuring the practice sessions and interview footage) also includes several Robert Johnson songs not recorded for the ME AND MR. JOHNSON album. In addition to playing with his group, the English guitar legend tackles several pieces in tandem with guitarist Doyle Bramhall II (who adds a distinct Texas flair to Clapton's more Chicago-influenced style), and solo on acoustic guitar. Clapton's well-documented lifelong love of Johnson's music has never been clearer, as the music often reveals his undiminished sense of wide-eyed wonder about the enigmatic "King of the Delta Blues."
Live, intimate, and raw, this package is the essential audio/video companion to Clapton's gold, Top 10 Me And Mr. Johnson tribute to Robert Johnson. Filmed during tour rehearsals in London and Dallas, plus a Los Angeles hotel room and Dallas warehouse where Johnson made some of his final recordings, this package features Clapton performing all Johnson songs with his touring band, acoustically with Doyle Bramhall II and solo. Also included is a discussion about Johnson and his influence. A performance/documentary DVD with 14 tracks (from which the 11 CD selections are taken) is also included.

Can't figure out why EC recorded this one after Me and Mr. Johnson. It's a lot more of the same and looks like EC is cashing in by milking de bluescow.

This guy is amazing. Eric has once again worked his magic, re-creating these amazing blues hits. I could listen to that album all day long. He interprets the songs amazingly, again showing why he's one of, if not the best

Mr. Johnson - Mr. Clapton
Mr. Clapton gives Mr. Johnson his due with this album. Thanks for Mr. Johnson for giving Mr. Clapton some excellent music to work with. Get this album you will not be disappointed.

Clapton gives us an outstanding album of renditions of classic acoustic blues from the one and only Blues Master, Robert Johnson. While these songs loose something in the modern era production style employed by Clapton, it is still one of the most intense, moving and powerful translations of Robert Johnson's works avaliable.
In this, Clapton should succeed brilliantly and will hopefully turn another generation of listeners on to Johnson's compositions as his masterpiece, Unplugged.
Sessions For Robert J is a must own for any blues afficiando and Eric Clapton fan.
