During the filming of tour rehearsals that followed the release of Eric Clapton's acclaimed ME AND MR. JOHNSON, bassist Nathan East jokingly noted that many of the band's performances were "better than on the album." Clapton's longtime low-ender ... Full Descriptionmay have been right, as the resultant SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J provides the best of both worlds--the freshness of live interaction and the sound quality of a studio album.
The differences between the two discs are sometimes striking, but often subtle. Clapton's vocals on "Milkcow's Calf Blues" are more forceful, Billy Preston's organ stabs on "Stop Breakin' Down Blues" just that much funkier. Of course, SESSIONS FOR ROBERT J (which comes paired with a lengthy documentary DVD featuring the practice sessions and interview footage) also includes several Robert Johnson songs not recorded for the ME AND MR. JOHNSON album. In addition to playing with his group, the English guitar legend tackles several pieces in tandem with guitarist Doyle Bramhall II (who adds a distinct Texas flair to Clapton's more Chicago-influenced style), and solo on acoustic guitar. Clapton's well-documented lifelong love of Johnson's music has never been clearer, as the music often reveals his undiminished sense of wide-eyed wonder about the enigmatic "King of the Delta Blues."
Live, intimate, and raw, this package is the essential audio/video companion to Clapton's gold, Top 10 Me And Mr. Johnson tribute to Robert Johnson. Filmed during tour rehearsals in London and Dallas, plus a Los Angeles hotel room and Dallas warehouse where Johnson made some of his final recordings, this package features Clapton performing all Johnson songs with his touring band, acoustically with Doyle Bramhall II and solo. Also included is a discussion about Johnson and his influence. A performance/documentary DVD with 14 tracks (from which the 11 CD selections are taken) is also included.
Personnel: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitars); Doyle Bramhall II (guitar); Chris Stainton (piano); Billy Preston (Hammond b-3 organ); Nathan East (bass guitar); Steve Gadd (drums).
Recording information: 2004.

...WOW This guy is amazing. Eric has once again worked his magic, re-creating these amazing blues hits. I could listen to that album all day long. He interprets the songs amazingly, again showing why he's one of, if not the best Submitted by Evan (Portland, OR, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

A Worthy tribute to the Master of Blues Clapton gives us an outstanding album of renditions of classic acoustic blues from the one and only Blues Master, Robert Johnson. While these songs loose something in the modern era production style employed by Clapton, it is still one of the most intense, moving and powerful translations of Robert Johnson's works avaliable.
In this, Clapton should succeed brilliantly and will hopefully turn another generation of listeners on to Johnson's compositions as his masterpiece, Unplugged.
Sessions For Robert J is a must own for any blues afficiando and Eric Clapton fan. Submitted by redledge (Somerset, KY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sessions For Robert J album
$13.05 In 1964, when the Beatles where still singing "I Want to Hold Your Hand," Bob Dylan was quietly making history at New York's Philharmonic Hall (now Avery Fisher Hall). ANOTHER SIDE OF BOB DYLAN had recently been released, but even the flights of fancy on "Spanish Harlem Incident" and "To Ramona" (both performed here), while unprecedented, couldn't have prepared the audience for the Big Bang of songwriting represented by the still-unrecorded "Gates of Eden" and "It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)." In a voice full of youthful vitality and insouciance, Dylan delivered groundbreaking poetic epics to a crowd that must have been equally confounded and exhilarated.

Sessions For Robert J CD music
$10.65 Applying liberal amounts of slide and fuzz guitar, this English rock legend saunters along fare such as "Traveling Riverside Blues" and "Love in Vain," time-honored Johnson classics better known through renditions by Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, respectively. Portnoy's unobtrusive harp provides subtle accompaniment to Clapton's heartfelt playing, be it the swirling dirge "Hell Hound on My Trail" or the harmony-soaked "Come on in My Kitchen." The proceedings are also enhanced by the Hammond organ and piano work of sideman Billy Preston, whose trips up and down the eighty-eights give added punch to songs like the rollicking "32-20 Blues" ...

$18.59 Cream's set of reunion shows in May 2005 was a justly hot ticket. The legendary rock trio of Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton--two jazz musicians and a blues guitarist--was one of the most influential bands of the 1960s, even though they played together for less than three years. They brought ...
