Yet another fabulous session by Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers from the early '60s. CARAVAN was the Messengers' debut for Riverside during a time when they primarily recorded sessions for Alfred Lion's Blue Note label. This is the sextet version of the group, with Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, and Wayne Shorter forming one of the best front lines of all time. As usual, the band is the epitome of classic hard bop, with tight ensemble work, highly advanced arrangements, and powerful solos by all.
The group's impressive arrangement of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" opens the set with signature African drum grooves and solos from the leader. Music director Shorter contributes two original selections for the set; his swinging waltz "Sweet 'N' Sour" is offered in two takes, and the moving "This is For Albert" is, interestingly enough, a dedication to pianist Bud Powell. One of the group's strengths, of course, was their treatment of standards, and both "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "Skylark" receive beautiful readings here. Freddie Hubbard's classic "Thermo" gets two excellent takes to close the set in true Messengers fashion.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Caravan
$16.05 Digitally remastered by Joe Tarantino (1987, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
THE SOUND OF SONNY shows everything that makes Sonny Rollins one of the titans of the tenor saxophone. He has a tone which can evoke heart-rending passions with a smoothness just this side of Ben Webster. Add to that the man's warm and playful sense of humor, and you've got a sax that's every bit a full and well-rounded emotional being. Without ever cheapening humor into novelty, it's a staple of his persona. This time out he finds the wacky joy in playing "Toot, Toot, Tootsie" as if it's some kind of after hours national anthem (this is, after all the same man who recorded "I'm An Old Cowhand" on his WAY OUT WEST album). The session ...

EXPLORATIONS, Bill Evans' fourth solo album, is aptly named. Throughout, Evans displays the high-minded lyrical facility, long flowing phrases and rich sound that made him so popular with both fans and other musicians during the 1950s and '60s. The intrepid nature of his improvisations and the edgy interactivity of his trio echo the album's title in tracks like the expansive "Elsa," "Israel," and the Miles Davis composition "Nardis."
Evans is also a master of the ballad, and he shapes tracks such as "Haunted Heart" and the shimmering, evocative "Elsa" into ...

Of course, alto saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley played with Miles Davis on several classic sessions, and his collaborations with Bill Evans on 1961's KNOW WHAT I MEAN and with Wes Montgomery on 1960's THE POLLWINNERS are widely beloved. But this 1958 date, where Adderley and vibraphonist Milt "Bags" Jackson go head to head, may be the finest of Adderley's collaborative sessions.
Jackson, forever remembered as an integral member of the Modern Jazz Quartet, is the greatest vibes player in jazz history. He creates powerful solos with the distinctively mellow percussion instrument. Jackson's inimitable playing meshes beautifully with Adderley's ...

MULLIGAN MEETS MONK documents the 1957 meeting of two sharp musical minds. Though the pairing may seem unlikely, baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan--whose cool, West Coast style blends dexterity with laid-back grace--and Thelonious Monk--whose radical, angular piano playing and thoroughly modern compositions are blueprints for the possibilities of bop--sound remarkable together. In fact, it is the contrast between the players' styles that lends this set its balance and appeal.
The program, which includes four compositions by Monk and one by Mulligan, is ...

$15.19 As far back as I can remember there was always music in my life. My Father was a professional bass player. I was raised with lots of different music in the house. I guess that is why my music has vast variety of influence. I started playing drums between the ages of 2 and 3. It was in High school when I started writing music and playing other instruments because I was blown away by Prince after seeing Purple Rain . I noticed that at that moment I wanted to reach out to a different direction. That led me to playing everything on my demos. That ...
