Yet another fabulous session by Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers from the early '60s. CARAVAN was the Messengers' debut for Riverside during a time when they primarily recorded sessions for Alfred Lion's Blue Note label. This is the sextet version of the group, with Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, and Wayne Shorter forming one of the best front lines of all time. As usual, the band is the epitome of classic hard bop, with tight ensemble work, highly advanced arrangements, and powerful solos by all.
The group's impressive arrangement of Duke Ellington's "Caravan" opens the set with signature African drum grooves and solos from the leader. Music director Shorter contributes two original selections for the set; his swinging waltz "Sweet 'N' Sour" is offered in two takes, and the moving "This is For Albert" is, interestingly enough, a dedication to pianist Bud Powell. One of the group's strengths, of course, was their treatment of standards, and both "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "Skylark" receive beautiful readings here. Freddie Hubbard's classic "Thermo" gets two excellent takes to close the set in true Messengers fashion.

As a sort of follow-up to Art Pepper's matchup with Miles Davis's trio in the 1957 classic Art Pepper Meets the Rhythm Section, Pepper utilizes Davis's sidemen on this 1960 near-classic. In addition to pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Jimmy Cobb, trumpeter Conte Candoli makes the group a quintet on four of the eight numbers. The CD reissue adds "The Way You Look Tonight" (formerly only available on another LP) and an alternate take of the title cut to the original repertoire. This time around, rather than emphasizing standards, Pepper performs just three ("Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise," Thelonious Monk's "Rhythm-A-Ning" and "The Way You Look Tonight") and includes three originals of his own: "Diane," "Bijou the Poodle" and "Gettin' Together." There's a lot to like about this session led by Jim Rotondi. This superb trumpeter, flügelhornist, and arranger is joined by a first-rate rhythm section (pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Ray Drummond, and drummer Joe Farnsworth), as well as the talented yet under-appreciated alto saxophonist Jesse Davis on five of the eight tracks.
The program itself is well balanced, with great blowing, imaginative charts
and a pair of strong originals. Rotondi's cooking "On Y Va (Let's Go)" is a brilliant opener, setting up a solid groove. "The Pleasure Dome" is his salute to the tiny but popular New York nightclub Smoke; it captures the excitement of a typical evening in this uptown venue.
"The Breeze and I" first turned up on a 1940 big band date led by Jimmy Dorsey and was later adapted by a few bop and hard bop small groups; but Hazeltine's updated treatment swings like mad in a post-bop setting while retaining its Latin undercurrent. The leader switches to flügelhorn for a lush rendition of the standard "My Ideal" accompanied solely by the pianist, with Drummond and Farnsworth making a late entrance.
