To Live in Discontent bundles Strike Anywhere's out-of-print 2001 EP Chorus of One with outtakes from 2003's Exit English, a handful of previously vinyl-only material, and a few choice covers. Despite the grapeshot it's a pretty cohesive release, sacrificing none of the Virginia-based hardcore collective's political vitriol, nor its flair for brain-stinging melody. Fans of wide-angle acts like AFI will rally behind the harmonies and triumphant chord changes of "Antidote" (from a 2000 7" for Fat Wreck), but then Thomas Barnett rips into a line like "Poverty is the biggest and strongest jail that the government ever built," and you know you're dealing with kids who grew up on the righteous ethos of D.C. hardcore. That's what's great about Strike Anywhere -- its consciousness is catchy. That sound continues through "Chorus of One" (where this comp's title comes from), the strident guitar breakdowns of "Incendiary," and the hyper-driven mission statement "Cassandratic Equation," in which Barnett declares his revolt for "the vision of strength." He wouldn't be more sincere if he sweat blood. Throughout To Live in Discontent it's that old lockstep hardcore rhythm, but Strike Anywhere manages to make it new on each track. (Garth Petrie's evocative, Joe Lally-esque bass work is a constant highlight.) "Sunspotting" dates from a 1999 demo, and features a great basement four-track mix -- the guitar's in your left ear, the drums are too loud, and the vocals emanate from the jury-rigged isolation booth. Amazing. As for the covers, the Gorilla Biscuits nod ("Two Sides") makes perfect sense, as both that band and the resulting Quicksand are in Strike Anywhere's every seam. Dag Nasty's "Values Here" is modified with a richer melody, and the unit adopts the working-class Cockney aesthetic perfectly for Cock Sparrer's "Where Are They Now?" Overall, a pretty incredible record. With To Live in Discontent, Strike Anywhere furthers its own rep as one of modern-day hardcore's most vital acts, while paying tribute to the heroes and records that made the band believe. ~ Johnny Loftus

| | Avenged Sevenfold City Of Evil CD (2005)
To Live In Discontent songs
$9.49 Even though Avenged Sevenfold's first two albums clearly got them lumped into the emo camp, the California quintet always hinted at the heavy metal influence of bands like Iron Maiden. With their major-label debut CITY OF EVIL, not only have they fleshed out these tendencies via the intricate riffing of dual guitarists Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates, but they've begun to dabble with more intricate, prog-like song structures. And with singer M. Shadows recovering from vocal chord surgery, he employs a considerably more melodic approach.

| | Ravi Shankar Passages CD (1990)
To Live In Discontent music CDs
$7.59 Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass met in Paris in 1965, when Glass was a young aspiring composer and Shankar was confirming his place in the world's classical canon. Shankar acted as an informal mentor to Glass, and their interaction inspired Glass to consider the possibilities of rhythm. By the time they joined forces at a New York City studio, in 1989, the two occupied a more level playing field.

To Live In Discontent songs
$26.15 Prinicpally recorded at Norman Petty's Studio, Clovis, New Mexico between 1954 and 1959. Includes liner notes by Billy Altman.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).
Few artists have exercised such a profound influence in such a short space of time. Holly's untimely death robbed pop of a performer adept as a solo act and as leader of his group, the Crickets. He wrote, or co-wrote, most of his own material at a time when many singers relied on outside material, and his sparse, but effective, guitar style proved highly influential, particularly on British beat groups. The Buddy Holly Story abounds with songs now indisputably pop classics and confirms Holly's status as a major figure. The Beatles, Tex-Mex music and the singer-songwriter genre each owe Holly a debt, which is itself a lasting tribute to the quality of his work.

| | Tricky Mission Accomplished CD (2001) Extended Play
To Live In Discontent album
$8.99 "MISSION ACCOMPLISHED" contains 3 brand new songs plus one highly sought after track previously available only as a bootleg.
It isn't that Tricky is no longer elaborating on his signature sound -- turning out variations of Maxinquaye would perhaps be regressive, but it would also still be enjoyable -- but that he's burrowed into bitter, nasty self-parody. It's little wonder that Island decided to cut its losses while the label could, since he's become positively obsessed with two things: proving his street hip-hop credibility (without changing his sound, mind you) and dwelling on his lack of commercial success. This might not be a death knell if he demonstrated ...
