Pistoleros Famosos album
$10.75 The Mexican ranchera singer Vicente Fernandez was already a cultural icon by the late 1960s. By the early 2000s, a time that saw ranchera reaching untold levels of popularity in both Mexico and the United States, Fernandez had become a towering legend. Not surprisingly, perhaps, the man's moving, romantic vocals showed no signs of losing their power, as 2007's PARA SIEMPRE VICENTE FERNANDEZ proved. A collaboration with acclaimed Norteno songwriter Joan Sebastian, PARA SIEMPRE is a winning collection, showcasing both Fernandez's inimitable style and Sebastian's fine songs.
Personnel: Bernardino De Santiago, Joan Sebastian, Erick Mora (guitar); J. Manuel Jimenez (vihuela); Javier Carillo, Javier Alfaro, Hugo Santiago, J. Manuel Viurquis, Edmundo Cortes, Hugo Colula, David Rivera (violin); Francisco Cedillo, Alesia Martinez ...
| | Roberto Tapia El Nino De La Tuna CD (2009)
Pistoleros Famosos CD music
$10.15 Roberto Tapia has switched labels -- from the reggaeton-centric Machete Music to the traditional Mexican powerhouse Fonovisa -- for this, his follow-up to 2008's LOS AMIGOS DEL M and third album overall. His music hasn't really changed much; it's the same mix of banda and norteño. He brings a few stylistic quirks to these conservative genres, though. He doesn't oversing or go crazy with vibrato like other, more florid Mexican singers; he enunciates carefully enough that even a first-year Spanish student could follow along, and occasionally throws small flourishes at the end of a line that fans of soul music might recognize. In a way, these could almost be seen as nods in the direction of a crossover listening audience. So too the mournful, almost bluesy feel of the horns on "Como Me Enganaste" and "Caminos Diferentes." The biggest surprise on this album, though, is "La Tambora," an upbeat dance number that sounds more like merengue than either of the two genres in which Tapia traditionally works.

| | Flaming Lips Zaireeka CDs (1997) Limited Edition
Pistoleros Famosos songs
$18.25 ZAIREEKA is a 4-CD limited edition release. Each CD contains the same 8 compositions intended for simultaneous playback on up to 4 CD players.
It would be an understatement to say that ZAIREEKA, the four-disc, experimental opus from Oklahoma City's resident post-punk geniuses the Flaming Lips, is not your run-of-the-mill release. Each disc has a partial mix of the same eight songs, so the only way to hear the album as intended is by using four different cd-players at once. Yet, as Lips mastermind Wayne Coyne hints at in the liner notes, that makes ZAIREEKA an inherently social event--invite some friends, tell 'em to bring extra boomboxes.
As for ZAIREEKA's music, it is an ambitious extension of the kind of psyche-noise-pop that the Flaming Lips have mastered since their mid-80s inception. Gloriously catchy moments--like the chugging rhythm of the opening "Okay I'll Admit It That I Really Don't Understand" or the serene ambient-pop air of "Thirty Five Thousand Feet Of Despair"--float out constantly, only to be eaten up within waves of sound. As pop music goes, ZAIREEKA's about as experimental a trip as you can lay on the average listener before they run for cover, but those who remain will find their stay extremely worthwhile.
Limited edition 4-CD set. Play all four at once. Standard double jewelcase 1997 release.
Includes liner notes by Wayne Coyne.
