Ville Valo and his gloomy crew return to their metallic roots with LOVE METAL, the band's heaviest offering since their full-length debut. Launching full force into the propulsive "Buried Alive By Love," HIM explores dirgy, Sabbath-style rock ("Sweet Pandemonium"), emotive balladry ("This Fortress of Tears"), and high-speed angst ("Soul on Fire"). But amidst the turbo-charged reinvigoration, the group retains a flair for disarmingly beautiful sounds, with flowing piano work on "The Sacrament" and a mandolin accompaniment for "The Funeral of Hearts." The closing number, "The Path," unexpectedly summons a slow-paced, '50s rock-ballad feel, and the approach imbues the tune with a unique vibe. By this 2005 album, the Finnish band's formula could have been stagnant, but through passionate performances and a desire to push its own boundaries, HIM keeps making beguiling, goth-flavored heavy rock for the masses.
A lot of people have the propensity to give H.I.M. unnecessary doses of grief simply because of the band's friendship and professional allegiance to pro skater Bam Margera. What's unfortunate about this is that H.I.M. actually produces dramatic metal of high sonic quality, and once again Love Metal further reinforces that notion. Going one better than Razorblade Romance, Ville Valo and company waste no time bringing out the big guns with "Buried Alive By Love," which easily measures up to the group's most well-known moments. The songwriting is as strong as it has been in quite some time and a newly found sense of urgency keeps the record going at a well-tempered pace. For die-hard fans, this is the album H.I.M. has been struggling to make and realize for quite a while, and even the aforementioned detractors of the group would be well served by giving this record a spin. Amazing! every song is different, which is hard to accomplish. very well done! one song will be acoustic or have piano (my favorite song, by the way, The Sacrament) but then it will get grungy like Sweet Pandimonium, Buried Alive By Love, or This Fortress of Tears, and then all the rest are a mix. luvin' it!

Despite having releases available mostly on import, the Finnish metal band HIM has inspired an incredibly loyal cult following in the United States. In late 2003, Universal reissued this, the group's sophomore album from 2000 (which reportedly sold over a million copies in Europe), with two remixed tracks from HIM's debut and one new song. Combining elements of vintage glam, old-school goth, and classic rock, with a few modern touches sprinkled in, the ensemble provides potent accompaniment to frontman Ville Valo's tortured singing.
HIM's dynamic music is based on an infectious blend of metallic riffs and goth keyboards. Mixing hard rock anthems with softer ballads, the band allows Valo to wax poetic (almost psychotic) about tragic love ("Join Me in Death"), romantic fatalism ("I Love You [Prelude to Tragedy]"), and monstrous obsession ("Right Here in My Arms"). One can only be grateful that the Delta blues has experienced yet another mutation since the dawn of the new millennium. In the 1990s, acts like the Flat Duo Jets, the Blues Explosion, 20 Miles, and a host of others used the Delta tradition in their brand of post-punk blues. But in the new century, bands like the Black Keys, Immortal Lee County Killers, Pearlene, and Guy Blakeslee's Entrance go deeper into the root. They ape the forms, evoke the ghostly spirit and feel of the tradition, and meld it together with a shambolic rock & roll intensity. Questions of authenticity mean nothing here. It's the spirit of the original music that's hotly and often raucously pursued and evoked. In Blakeslee's case, Wandering Stranger is drenched in the devil's music, from Charley Patton to John Hurt.
