Maximum Eminem album
$14.35 Emboldened by Love Behind the Melody's crossover success, involving a Top Ten spot on the Billboard 200, a BET Award and two Grammy nominations, Raheem DeVaughn grants his third album a title that sounds (but does not necessarily look) arrogant. Despite the wordplay, DeVaughn did not mess around when it came to recording a set befitting a title as grand as The Love & War MasterPeace. There are plenty of love songs, naturally, and most of them are imaginative and excellent. Even when they slip into clever foolishness, as on "B.O.B." -- in which the protagonist testifies the many reasons why he would be preferable to a specific device -- they are strong in construction, much more about honoring the woman than the man's prowess, and DeVaughn's easy falsetto never sounds self-satisfied. On the socially conscious material, DeVaughn really lays into it all with a dedicated force that is potent musically and lyrically. Subtract Dr. Cornel West's recurring spots as hype man-slash-mood enhancer, and the album would still remain one of the most grippingly conscious major-label R&B albums of the last 30 years, featuring the Curtis Mayfield-channeling (and sampling) "Bulletproof," an alluringly morose opener, and the startling 13 minutes that make up the closers "Nobody Wins a War" (despite involving the input of nearly a dozen of DeVaughn's contemporaries, it is no wreck) and "Revelations 2010" (assisted by Damian Marley and a chorus of "They're out to bury me, they're out to bury you/And all you can do is arm yourself"). An expanded ...
| | Ludacris Battle Of The Sexes CD (2010)
Maximum Eminem CD music
$10.24 If it seems odd that an album as bravado-filled, trash-talking, and schoolboy horny as this one comes with the title Battle of the Sexes. It can be explained as a leftover title from what was originally planned as a joint release from Ludacris and his DTP protégé Shawnna. After the album's better half left the project -- along with the DTP family -- the title was never readjusted, and there are further confusing traces of the original concept, such as the "us vs. them" intro, which opens an album that's almost entirely "us." Still, quality control is less important than titillation when it comes to the porno-style album, and Battle of the Sexes delivers on that level. Redd Foxx-like ideas like making limbo instructions sound especially nasty ("How Low") or having fun with the Tiger Woods sex scandal ("Sexting") are coupled with safe and slick beats from the likes of the Runners, Swizz Beatz, and the Legendary Traxster. Luda is inspired enough to drop at least one belly laugh-worthy punch line per track, while the numerous guests are, at worst, on point, and at best (that would be Nicki Minaj), ...

| | Very Best Of The Rascals CD (2007)
Maximum Eminem songs
$6.99 Recorded from 1965 to 1972. Includes liner notes by Parke Puterbaugh.
A satisfying budget-priced compilation, THE VERY BEST OF THE RASCALS is as good as any (Young) Rascals compilation out there. While Rhino's two-disc ANTHOLOGY 1965-1972 has it beat in terms of comprehensiveness, these 16 tracks, from their first hit "Ain't Gonna Eat My Heart Out Anymore" to their last chart success "See," are the cream of the crop.
All of the hits are here, naturally, including "Good Lovin'," "People Got To Be Free," the superlative "How Can I Be Sure," and of course their biggest hit, "Groovin'." The lesser-known singles and key album tracks, like "A Girl Like You" and "I've Been Lonely Too Long," are nearly the equal of the hits, and overall, this is as solid a collection of '60s blue-eyed soul as you'll find.
Compilation producer: Gary Stewart.
Personnel: Gene Cornish (vocals, guitar); Felix Cavaliere (vocals, piano, organ); Eddie ...

| | Kiss Animalize CD (1984) Remastered
Maximum Eminem music CDs
$7.19 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
With personnel changes and neglect from a key member of the band, it's amazing ANIMALIZE turned out as well as it did. This record shows Kiss was able to rise above all the groups who copied a style of music that Kiss originated.
After LICK IT UP, "creative differences" pushed lead guitarist Vinnie Vincent out and speed demon Mark St. John in. Without missing a lick, St. John was able to fill Vincent's shoes admirably. Also around this time, Gene Simmons decides to try his hand at acting, starring in such films as "Runaway" and "Wanted Dead Or Alive". Thus, he is listed as Associate Producer but in reality had minimal input. Producer Paul Stanley did a fine job putting his own personal technical stamp on the album. Stanley sings on "I've Had Enough (Into The Fire)," a fast and furious track with motivational lyrics. He also fills in on bass for Simmons ...
