Personnel:Jerome Sabbagh: saxophone Ben Monder: guitarJoe Martin: bassTed Poor: drumsAll compositions by Jerome Sabbagh"North" was elected CD of the year 2005 by the readers of French monthly Jazzman. It was also selected in the top 10 jazz albums of 2005 by the Ottawa Citizen (Canada).Reviews“The willfully lyrical tenor saxophonist Jerome Sabbagh is the rarest of rare birds: a young tenor saxophonist with a distinctive concept, dependent not so much on his elders for inspiration as his own imagination.” (Chris Kelsey, JazzTimes)"Mr. Sabbagh played with untroubled self-assurance, and his songs had a sleek and sturdy appeal. Just as crucially, his colleagues strove for the unexpected, individually and as an ensemble. [...] Mr. Sabbagh avoided direct allusions to the saxophone totems. What he is working toward, simply and effectively, is a sincerely personal vocabulary." (Nate Chinen, New York Times)"One of the most skilled young tenor saxophonists around, Sabbagh's got a tune called "Sick Leo" that breaks away from the Wayne Shorter archetype so many horn players fall into. A slow saunter of a tune, it not only turns your head, but gives guitarist Ben Monder a chance to get his freak on." (Jim Macnie, Village Voice)"A startlingly good young jazz musician [...] Sabbagh chooses notes judiciously and swings firmly. And Sabbagh and "North" grow stronger and deeper with each listening." (Marc Meyers, All About Jazz)"Yet another in the long line of auspicious debuts from Fresh Sound New Talent artists, this one stands out even from what is becoming that label's “usual” exceptional standard." (Phil DiPietro, All About Jazz)About the Jerome Sabbagh QuartetThe Jerome Sabbagh Quartet plays modern, organic music that can appeal to listeners beyond the traditional jazz audience as well as regular jazz fans. Based in New York City, it has been signed by Fresh Sound New Talent, the label that has introduced many new leading jazz artists, such as Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Chris Cheek, Ethan Iverson, Reid Anderson, Robert Glasper and Marcus Strickland. Jerome Sabbagh has recently released his first album for Fresh Sound, "North".While he considers himself a jazz musician and is very much attached to improvising, Jerome has grown increasingly influenced by many types of music. This breadth of influences is evident in all original tracks assembled on "North". While the overall sound of the band remains distinct and cohesive, each track brings up a different mood.In Ben Monder (guitar), Joe Martin (bass) and Ted Poor (drums), Jerome Sabbagh has found some of the most talented musicians of this generation and like-minded accomplices. Ben Monder plays “nearly unsurpassable jazz guitar” (Ben Ratliff, New York Times) and has performed with a variety of artists, including Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, Tim Berne and Jack McDuff. He has appeared in over seventy CDs as a sideman and has three as a leader. Known for his warm sound, facile ear, and harmonic flexibility, bassist Joe Martin has performed with a wide variety of artists, which includes Kurt Rosenwinkel, Andy Bey, Mark Turner and Art Farmer. Ted Poor, while only 22 years old, has an uncanny ability to shape the music and a refreshingly unique, organic approach to playing the drums. He plays in the Ben Monder quartet, the Cuong Vu trio and with Chris Potter.

Personnel: Jerome Sabbagh (tenor saxophone); Ben Monder (guitar); Joe Martin (bass instrument); Ted Poor (drums).

Recording information: Brooklyn Recording, Brooklyn, New York (06/02/2004).

Down Beat (p.72) - 3 stars out of 5 - "The guitarist's textures and serpentine lines are frequently bold compared to Sabbagh's thoughtful explications of his well hooked, but mostly polite themes."

All songs written by Christian McBride except "Too Close For Comfort" (Jerry Bock/Larry Holofcener/George Weiss), "Splanky" (Neal Hefti), "Stars Fell On Alabama" (Frank Perkins/Mitchell Parish), and "Night Train" (Jimmy Forrest/Oscar Washington/Lewis C. Simpkins). Christian McBride's debut as a leader, GETTIN' TO IT, serves only to enhance his growing reputation for elegant, exhilarating musicianship, and offers compelling evidence as to why, at only 22, he's well on his way to becoming one of the most frequently recorded bassists since Ron Carter. The bass features "Splanky" and "Night Train" show what all the excitement is about. The former is a convocation of master players--Milt Hinton's roots extend back to Cab Calloway, while Ray Brown originally emerged as Dizzy Gillespie's teenage bass sensation in the trumpeter's post-World War II band. Together they create a Basie-like blues exchange of four-on-the-floor ideas, and McBride's tone comes across every bit as full and richly detailed as that of his innovative elders. And on "Night Train," a famous blues feature for Jimmy Forrest, McBride's ...

Unlike some of the first things you may learn as a child in this world it is all about survival. Through survival you may run in to obstacles whether it is mentally or physically. Despite being thrown into the infestation of the street life without a father figure and being sucked into the Mississippi crime wave, the future still looked bright for Sean Gates. Sean Gates, born Dashon Felder 27 years ago, is the epitome of the south. He is a man that bears a stone face, familiar with the severity of street violence and culture, but still, Gates, a very reserved and intelligent man, lets off a presence of a well traveled person who adapts to his surroundings without notice.Born and raised in Moss Point MS in the late 70's, Gates acquired a taste for hip hop at an early age. Some of his favorites including Scarface, Nas, Ice-T, KRS-One and some of the local talent from his area. The oldest of three sons, Gates took on a role of man of the household and help provide for his mother and two younger brothers. Looking up to the young hustlers and pimps, his hunger for the finer things would increase. His desire for school decreased as his appetite for illegal activities had grew. Gates was always noticed as excellent freestyler and song writer. After having close friends killed or either sentenced to jail, Gates decided to pursue rap seriously. He started recording songs in the bedroom of a high school neighbor, who would teach him to count bars, develop concepts and compose songs from scratch. In February of 96, Gates left Mississippi upon joining the United States Air Force. He spent time in Texas and California. Gates resided in Florida in the summer of 97. Still deeply rooted with hip hop, he and two other military companions started a hip hop group on Macdill Air Force Base called M.I.A(Money Infiltration Association). For the next two years they worked strenuously on their debut album at Dimensional Sound Productions in Tampa Florida. Like any other thing in life, good things don't last long and the group split up the following year. Beginning work on his solo album Gates attracted a buzz from producer/engineer, Anwar Joemmankhan, who was about to start a record label. In the fall of 2001 Gates signed with Survival Records and fell right into place. He made contributions to mixtapes, local artist projects and developed songs for the labels first full length album, Perfect Position. After the release of Perfect Position, Gates fan based increased and the demand for a solo album was established. Ready for the opportunity ...
