This double-CD features consistently ferocious electric guitar from Scott Henderson. Recorded live at La Ve Lee (a small club near Los Angeles), the extended program has Henderson mostly in the spotlight with electric bassist John Humphrey offering strong support and drummer Kirk Covington sometimes contributing rockish vocals that are as much shouting as they are singing. Henderson plays some jazz on Wayne Shorter's "Fee Fi Fo Fum," digs into blues now and then, and displays some country roots on "Hillbilly in the Band" but mostly plays high-intensity fusion, tearing into the pieces and showing that he could hold his own with any rock/fusion guitarist. Invigorating playing. ~ Scott Yanow

4 stars GLAD THEY'RE BACK !!!
Tremendous energy as usual with this band that I've been listening since the beginning of Scott's solo albums ! I simply regret live tracks sound too similar to studio ones. Anyway, the music played by these guys remain one of the more enjoyable ever.

5 stars The shy Scott Henderson
I went to see Scott Henderson in Phila., a few years ago, and it was small venue. No one was there yet, so I just walk in and walked around looking at some pictures on the walls. Then, Scott, walked in from a back room holding a red Strat looking thing and a handful of strings. He sat down and started putting them on the red thing. I began talking to him as if I knew him: What do you think of Kazumi Watanabe?" "Do you like your first three TT albums on Passport?" He liked Kazumi, but hates the first three TT records "way to contrived..." "Oh, I hate that tight formulaic style, I like things to happen as they happen" (or words very close to that). Anyway, he was very easy to to talk with, and more that happy to give of his time--no one would know what was going to happen in the next hour--oh my God!!! Well, if he likes loose, fairly open jams, with a little foundation to get it moving, he really go it right on this double live set. It is scary good! This is the kind of set that makes me want to turn up the volume in my car and blow away the rappers in their 28 inch rim Hummers (and I have the system to do it)!!! But seriously, Henderson's music is (and don't try this a home, kids) to be played at eye bleed levels. I know, I know, we are supposed to know better than that in 2005, but this is the one exception--what the hell, once would get you hooked (said the drug pusher). This has got to be the most out there, high energy, shamless fusion (thank you, Scott), all American power hungry, git box music to come down the pike (w/o much warning, by the way) in a long long time. Keep up the good work, Scott! What? I say, keep up the good work!!!

5 stars nutritive blues-jazz-rock
Incredible Henderson. Much melody and rhythm. Much tripping rock-jazz-blues. The band plays and interplays. If you like this style of guitar-oriented music don't miss this record. Is very exciting. Interesting harmonies and all very alive. A little raw but it's a hot performance! In Spain we say "cachondo". Bassist very supportive to the music. The drummer sings very fine, too.

Scott Henderson Well To The Bone CD  (2002)

Live! album
CD $14.29  4.6 stars Audio Samples
Well to the Bone is Scott Henderson's third outing as a leader apart from his group, Tribal Tech, the band he co-founded with electric bassist Gary Willis in the mid-'80s. As one of the finest fusion guitarists of his generation, Scott Henderson returns to his blues roots with a program of ten songs that feature multi-layered tracks of guitar and a few that pay tribute to the blues-rock of the '60s and the '70s. Henderson's six-string virtuosity is accompanied by Kirk Covington on drums and John Humphrey on bass. Special guest vocalist Wade Durham pours on the bluesy gusto sauce on "Lady P," adds a few of Jimi Hendrix's phrasing techniques on "Devil Boy," and creates a new funky blues direction on "Dat's da Way It Go." Vocalist Thelma Houston puts her diva stamp on "Lola Fay," a sludgy blues shuffle, and on the title track. These songs mark her return engagement with Henderson, who featured her on his 1997 Tore Down House. Overall Scott Henderson's playing ...

Greg Howe Extraction CD  (2003)

CD $14.29  4.4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Although he's primarily known as a heavy metal shredder, guitarist Greg Howe can pretty much adapt to any style thrown his way -- including jazz fusion. And this is precisely the style that is featured throughout 2003's Extraction, which saw Howe joined by such top-notch instrumentalists as Victor Wooten on bass and Dennis Chambers on drums (as well as David Cook on keys). Longtime fans of Howe who are hoping for at least a glimpse of his hard rock roots are out of luck here, as the tunes often recall the carefree fusion days of the 1970s, when such artists as Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, and Al di Meola were consistently giving a clinic with chops-heavy tunes. As far as modern-day fusion goes, Extraction is pretty darn consistent from ...

Bill Connors will always be best known for being the original guitarist with Chick Corea's Return to Forever, preceding Al DiMeola. After making one classic album (Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy), Connors left RtF and has had a lower profile ever since, spending some time exploring acoustic guitar. On 2004's Return, Connors is back on electric guitar ...

Eric Johnson Bloom CD  (2005)

Live! songs
CD $10.69  4.1 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
It's no secret that the time gap between albums by guitarist Eric Johnson is on par with such notorious 'hibernators' as Boston. And the arrival of his fourth all-new studio release, Bloom, was no different, as it appeared nearly nine years after the release of 1996's Venus Isle. Whereas most guitar heroes of the late '80s and early '90s were all about reeling off a zillion notes per second, Johnson was the exception, as he penned songs that saw his guitar supplying the melody where a voice could have been. This 16-track release (his second for Steve Vai's Favored Nations label) is split into three separate sections -- 'Prelude,' 'Courante,' and 'Allemande' -- which are supposedly "grouped together in terms of vibe and style." Highlights include "Summer Jam" (which does a splendid job of showcasing his guitar tone), the chicken'-pickin' ditty "Tribute to Jerry Reed," and the almost Steely Dan-esque "Magnetized." If you like your sounds raw and gritty and music off-the-cuff, Bloom isn't the place for you. But for die-hard fans, ...

Legendary pianist Chick Corea remains a towering figure in the world of jazz music, first as a keyboard player for Miles Davis during the trumpeter's groundbreaking BITCHES BREW era in the late-'60s, and then as co-founder (with bassist Stanley Clarke) of the seminal jazz-fusion band Return to Forever. This concert film captures the jazz icon performing at the 2004 Montreux Jazz Festival with the Chick Corea Elektric Band, which features Corea on keyboards, John Patitucci on bass, Frank Gambale on guitar, Dave Weckl on drums, ...

CD $14.29  4.3 stars Top 500
In the '80s, there appeared to be an onslaught of fusion releases that managed to incorporate elements of funk into the mix, while also favoring an incredibly clean production. Although the style appeared to go largely out of vogue in the '90s, several veteran players continued to stick to their guns, including drummer extraordinaire Dennis Chambers. Chambers has been releasing solo albums since the late '90s, yet he's probably best known as a hired gun, having played alongside several renowned artists of the rock world -- Santana, Steely ...

Meat & Potatoes
Ian Siegal Meat & Potatoes CD  (2005)

Live! album
CD $16.95  5 stars Top 500
Ian Siegal doesn't sound like the name of a blues singer; his name doesn't have the stereotypically bluesy ring of names like Memphis Slim, T-Bone Walker, Mississippi John Hurt, Lightnin' Hopkins, Big Maceo Merriweather or John Lee Hooker. Perhaps someone who is seeking to combine Celtic music and klezmer could be named Ian Siegal (Ian is a very Scottish name, Siegal very Jewish). But this Ian Siegal (who is from England) doesn't play either Celtic music or klezmer, and Meat & Potatoes is most definitely aimed at the blues market. On this 2005 recording, Siegal favors electric blues-rock with a strong Howlin' Wolf influence; his vocals owe a lot to Wolf's raspy vocal style. But Meat & Potatoes (which was recorded in Kent, England) is far from a carbon copy of the classic '50s and '60s recordings that the Wolf made in Chicago for Chess Records. Siegal has a different writing style, and as much as he obviously admires Wolf, he does things that Wolf didn't do. "Butter-Side Up," for example, is jazzy in a way that Wolf was not, and "Brandy Balloon" recalls the bluesier funk bands of the '70s (such as War and the Ohio Players). Without question, Siegal sounds like he has spent a lot of time listening to Howlin' Wolf, but he also sounds like he has spent a lot of time listening to the Doors, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, and Tower of Power. While Siegal is blues-oriented, ...
