When female lead vocalist Cadaveria left Opera IX and formed her own band (also called Cadaveria), some fans of the Italian outfit were worried. Cadaveria did her part to make Opera IX one of the more unusual bands in symphonic black metal, which -- like the death metal/black metal field in general -- is very male-dominated. There have been other death metal and black metal units that had female singers (including France's Hypnosis and Italy's Lifend), but they are definitely the exception instead of the rule. How well would Opera IX fare without Cadaveria, fans wondered? But while her departure was a major loss for Opera, it was by no means a fatal blow. Recorded in 2004, Anphisbena finds a post-Cadaveria lineup -- M the Bard on lead vocals, founder Ossian on guitar, Lunaris on keyboards, Vlad on bass, and Dalamar on drums -- getting along nicely. It's important to remember that Opera is Ossian's band; he founded an early lineup back in 1988 (before they were symphonic black metal and before Cadaveria came on board), and he's no dummy. Opera continues in the symphonic black metal style on Anphisbena, incorporating elements of goth rock and medieval music and providing material that is forceful, loud, and intense yet melodic and intricate. The most extreme thing about Anphisbena is M the Bard's lead vocals; his rasp is over-the-top and downright sinister. Nonetheless, this 66-minute CD is highly musical, and Anphisbena is not an exercise in bombast for the sake of bombast; that is true on Opera's original material (which dominates the album) as well as a memorable cover of Bathory's "One Road to Asa Bay." Anphisbena isn't Opera IX's best or most essential release, but it's a respectable addition to their catalog and demonstrates that there is indeed life after Cadaveria for the Italian headbangers. ~ Alex Henderson

In the early '90s, Cannibal Corpse acquired a small cult in the death metal underground by embracing some of the most gruesome lyrics the subgenre had to offer. Thriving on shock value, the band inspires comparisons to GWAR and comes across as a parody of death metal and grindcore more than anything. Like its previous album, the equally twisted Eaten Back to Life, Butchered at Birth addresses such lurid topics as dismemberment, torture, and masochism. One will need the lyric sheet to know just how gross songs like "Under the Rotted Flesh," "Meat Hook Sodomy," "Covered with Sores," ...

Cannibal Corpse emerged fully formed out of Florida's famous death metal swamp with this one. All the trademarks are in place, from the B-horror movie album cover art to the ludicrously over the top lyrics -- "Brains devoured in a frenzied slaughter, thirst for gore nothing more/Bile is dripping, puss from wounds, as the coroner drinks it down." Chris Barnes growls his vocals like Satan on a diet of razor blades and paint thinner, and the playing is uniformly savage. Although their pursuit of lyrical and musical extremes was something of a joke from this first release on, Cannibal Corpse's single-minded devotion to their cause is admirable. ~ Leslie Mathew Cannibal Corpse emerged fully formed out of Florida's famous death metal swamp with this one. Released in September 1982, DEVIL is Ozzy's third solo album and first live one. Recorded at NYC's Ritz, it closes a chapter in Ozzy's career with an all-Black Sabbath set, actually competing against his former bandmates as they released LIVE EVIL just a few months later. Ozzy's performance is as spirited as ever, and the Sabbath classics come across tight and rock solid. Opening with "Symptom Of The Universe," one of the finest metal compositions ever, the album pulls you into Ozzy's wacky and twisted world for the duration of the show. This remastered edition (with superb clarity) features the previously omitted "Sweet Leaf," Sabbath's ode to herbal remedy. Osbourne's last recorded song with Sabbath, the ironically titled "Never Say Die" is rocked with renewed vigor by the ace band of Brad Gillis, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge. The group and the over-the-top Manhattan crowd seem to play off each other. If you're a Sabbath or Ozzy fan, you need to purchase DEVIL, a sonic souvenir of a classic gig. excellent live performance of Ozzy/Black Sabbath's greatest hits. What's cool is that there are many songs on this album that aren't ...

These 12 tracks, compiled from Hawkins' own personal stash of well-worn acetates, brings together the rarest of the rare of this Louisiana rockabilly songwriter/producer. The centerpiece of this 12-track collection is the first-time appearance of the original 1956 demo version of Dale's big hit, "Susie-Q." Recorded by country songwriter Merle Kilgore -- then a disc jockey at KENT in Shreveport -- the original demo is looser and faster than the better-known hit version, moved along with two raw guitar solos from a 16-year-old James Burton (this now becoming his debut recording) and a surprise solo from saxman Sheldon Bazelle. The sound is raw and over-amped, the feel of a band taking a bandstand jam and trying to shape it into something that would fit onto one side of a phonograph record. The flip side of this scratchy 78 acetate is perhaps an even bigger surprise, Hawkins and band playing an impromptu slow blues entitled "If You Please Me" with Burton spraying licks all over the place, Dale mumbling a hastily assembled vocal, and no clear-cut ending. Equally fine is a version of Tarheel Slim's "Number Nine Train" featuring explosive guitar work from Carl Adams and the rare appearance of a slappin' upright bass (played by Bossier Strip regular Shorty Tony) on a Dale Hawkins record. This collection also features Hawkins in a supporting role picking guitar behind local boy vocalist Donnie Ray White and Nashville buddy Roger Miller, while his original band moonlights behind Maylon Humphries on "Weep No More," another cowbell rocker, this time in a minor key. Another noteworthy inclusion is "Superman," featuring Margaret Lewis on backup vocal, Roy Buchanan on guitar, and D.J. Fontana on drums. The title track, a wild instrumental with Adams driving the band on an agitated riff, later became the blueprint for "Lovin' Bug." Later cuts from the early '60s flesh things out (the gospel-styled "Everglades," "On Account of You," ...

With the departure of Ronnie James Dio from Rainbow in 1978, guitarist Richie Blackmore could have easily sought a Dio clone and continued the group's recognizable sound. He instead brought Graham Bonnet aboard, a dramatic belter with a completely different style. Blackmore would also recruit former Deep Purple mate Roger Glover on bass and the talented Don Airey on keyboards. The band's sound went from sword-and-sorcery epics to more straight-ahead rock. "All Night Long" is one of the more popular ...

Through these songs I want the word of God to be expressed. “My word will not return unto me void, but it will accomplish that which I please…” Isaiah 55:11 The Bible warns us that in the last days perilous times shall come.(2 Tim 3:1) Today we see times different from those of the past. We Need to Pray tells the story of some of the happenings in today’s world that cause the hearts of man to be weary and fearful. With the smooth R&B flavor this video proposes to reach outside of the church and touch hearts of all viewers. Pray without Ceasing (1Thes 5:17); Reflections is a song of soul-searching to hear from God. Reflections asks the question “How do you see me Lord?” In a world where folks are so concerned with appearance, status and self assessment, the question that matters most is, when God looks at our heart what does He see? When we stand before God at the throne, I want to hear him say, “Enter in, I know you”Choose Life, ...
