Celtic Caravans - Road To Romantacism / Julianne Baird
$9.19 Since Chris Young appeared on the "Nashville Star" television program in 2006, he's been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with "Drinkin' Me Lonely," his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of THE MAN I WANT TO BE in 2009 haven't done too badly either, getting plenty of play on radio. While Chris Young's sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it's also a lot more hardcore honkytonk than it is the refried '70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians, giving the disc a more organic sound than a lot of what's out there. Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: "Rose in Paradise" is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It's a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is a moving cover of Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia." Its beauty lies in its arrangement; his reading of this classic ballad is utterly tender and believable, accentuanted by a sparse, stripped-down production. And rather than stick with his trademark baritone, he stretches his vocal range--including a mean falsetto--to the brink and still pulls it all off.

Celtic Caravans - Road To Romantacism / Julianne Baird
$14.79 It is one thing to play a musical instrument, and yet another to live that instrument. Gretchen Yanover has been living the cello since she was 10 years old. This passionate obsession has persisted and (to our delight) borne fruit.Gretchen has played in the Northwest Sinfonietta since 1998, the premier professional chamber orchestra in the Pacific Northwest. She also freelances in various orchestras and ensembles such as the Boise Philharmonic, the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra, and the Bellevue Philharmonic. Gretchen has played with many varied string quartets. Outside of the "classical" music realm, Gretchen performs steadily. She has played in KD Lang's orchestra and recorded with Built to Spill, Trwst, the Stares, and Tim Young. She spent a couple years performing and recording with the live drum & bass group, KJ Sawka.Ms. Yanover now balances performing, teaching, and life at home with her daughter, born August 24, 2006. She teaches strings as well as other music classes at the Northwest School in Seattle and is the head of the music department. She has been bringing music to children in public and private schools since 1998 when she received her teaching certificate and a BA in music at the University of Washington.Gretchen's first solo release titled Bow and Cello is a beautiful collection of twelve personal compositions and two composed by the late Michael Cava. Of her own compositions, many were born out of Saturday morning improvisations at Lighthouse Roasters cafe in Seattle, where she performed for several years. These pieces have been described as lyrically melodic wanderings over meditative ostinatos. Gretchen began those Saturday mornings with simply bow and cello (acoustic) performing classical pieces. After a time, she brought in her electric cello and a Line 6 loop sampler and began improvising sincere and soothing melodies over samples of cello-lines she created. These improvisations led her to record this lovely work where she further composed these pieces with her acoustic cello. Each track has its own personality and beauty. The full length of the CD is timed at 60 minutes, which lends wonderfully to a massage or meditation session.Bow and Cello has been featured on Seattle’s “The Beat” radio show on 94.9 ...

Celtic Caravans - Road To Romantacism / Julianne Baird
$10.65 Born into a family of musicians, Julian Mock has made music pretty much all his life. His formal study of classic guitar began at the ripe age of two and a half, and by the age of five he was performing with his brother, sister, and parents in a classic guitar quintet. Using their west Texas home-base as a jumping-off point, the Mock Family Guitarists toured the eastern United States and Europe, as well as Colombia and Mexico, gigging and busking to enthusiastic audiences in churches, concert halls, circuses, schools, and on street corners.Julian supplemented his musical training with cornet as a teen, then began concentrating on electric guitar. His classical background served him well as he moved into rock and jazz. He became fascinated by the intricacies, subtleties, and interrelationships of all manner of sound and and music, and much of his subsequent work is based on a refined mingling of styles and techniques.Julian has played in a wide range of ensembles, from heavy rock and free form fusion, to backing folk singers. In 2002 Julian composed, produced, and recorded a 16-song CD entitled "Sound Travels". Each composition was designed to focus on and develop a specific technique, without sounding like an exercise. On this album you will hear solo acoustic guitar being strummed, hammered, picked, pulled, muted, fingered, tapped, and stroked ...
