As if Kings of Leon's keen songwriting, stylistic amalgam, and gutsy attack weren't enough, there is the utterly unique singing of Caleb Followill, who usually sounds as though he is heavily intoxicated or has just woken up from a nap. Followill's ... Full Descriptionlazy, idiosyncratic phrasing and intonation admirably take Kings of Leon out of the realm of potentially similar bands, with singers who are content to yelp and imitate. AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK rocks, rolls over, dreams, and gets up with a pain in its heart--a process that merits numerous listens.
Kings of Leon's blend of bluesy raunch, countrified inflections, streamlined Strokes-like guitar jams, sleepy psychedelia, and post-punk stylings is a fresh, yet somehow familiar, cocktail. AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK, the band's sophomore effort, follows closely on the heels of the honky-tonk rock of their debut, but it pushes the whole even further into unexpected territory. While "Pistol of Fire" cooks like John Lee Hooker with extra backbeat and a side of beans, other tracks on HEARTBREAK mix classic-rock boogie ("Four Kicks"), swagger and desperate yowls ("The Bucket"), and hillbilly yodels ("Day Old Blues") into an engaging indie aesthetic.
Kings Of Leon: Caleb Followill (vocals, guitar); Matthew Followill (guitar); Jared Followill (bass instrument); Nathan Followill (drums).
Rolling Stone (No. 968, pp.69-70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "One of the best things about this album is its promise....the classic rock inside the Kings busts out..." Rolling Stone (p.68) - "[T]he perfect cocktail of dirty blues and classic punk." Spin (p.85) - "Though they snugly fit inside their vintage genes, the Kings manage to make room for a surprising amount of heart." - Grade: B Entertainment Weekly (No. 808, p.102) - "Caleb Followill's slurred drawl and lewd-boy lyrics are still undeniably riveting..." - Grade: B Magnet (p.100) - "[With] a balanced mix, better songs and a more varied pace." Great cd for alternative rock lovers! This cd was great. I really liked the music. The singers voice is very unique. Though it is hard to understand what he is saying, his voice and the music fit perfectly. Submitted by stywalt (Greer, SC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hide the Women and Children The boys are back with another barn-burning, foot-stomping, whiskey breath collection of straight up rock and roll. With a stripped down, punkish delivery, the Kings have wrested the crown of low tech rock from such media darlings as the Strokes. The Kings have a knack for melody and rhythm delivered with enormous heart. Caleb Followill's liquor-mouthed singing may be an acquired taste for some, but it continues the tradition of such giants as Jagger, Dylan and Robert Johnson. This is a very good album by a very good band. Pistol Of Fire is an instant classic. I can't wait for their next release. Long live the Kings. Aha Shake Heartbreak album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin ...
| | Kings Of Leon Youth & Young Manhood CD (2003)
Aha Shake Heartbreak CD music
$8.39 Though Kings of Leon hail from the South and boast a collective hirsute quality that would make CCR proud, they are neither Skynyrd-worshipping Southern rock revivalists nor country-tinged roots-rockers. Rather, their raw, shambling sound suggests a cross between the garage rock of the Strokes and White Stripes and the heartland sleaze-rock of Nashville Pussy. In fact, if the aforementioned garage types hadn't loosened up the music industry a bit, it would be hard to imagine a band as down-and-dirty as this foursome getting a major label deal. The songs aren't all blazing stompers; there are the occasional touches of acoustic guitar and piano and even a waltz tempo on one tune, but still in the same pointedly discombobulated spirit as the ...
| | Arcade Fire Funeral CD (2004)
Aha Shake Heartbreak music CDs
$12.25 Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic, decade-spanning rock anthology.
This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging ...
| | Kaiser Chiefs Employment CD (2005)
Aha Shake Heartbreak songs
$8.65 Emerging in an era rife with New Wave rip-off artists, the Kaiser Chiefs ran the risk of their sharp suits, angular haircuts, and early-1980s influences being taken the wrong way. While many of their peers shamelessly aped the most obvious aspects of the Cure, New Order, et al, Kaiser Chiefs (the name comes from a South African soccer team) much more subtly incorporated the sensibilities of their influences. Though one can hear traces of ...

| | Yusef Lateef Centaur And The Phoenix CD (1961)
Aha Shake Heartbreak songs
$10.19 An under-appreciated jazz innovator, Yusef Lateef made many strides with regard to instrumentation in jazz. One of the few jazz oboe and bassoon players, Lateef also introduced such instruments as the argol (a double clarinet that resembles a bassoon) and the shanai (a type of oboe) into the jazz setting. However, his main instruments were the tenor saxophone and the flute. On this 1961 record date, the inventive Lateef surrounds himself with a horn section that features, among others, trumpet great Clark Terry and trombonist Curtis Fuller. A bassoonist by the name of Josea Taylor is also heard here and the rhythm section is lead by the noted pianist and composer, Joe Zawinul.
