Kings of Leon's blend of bluesy raunch, countrified inflections, streamlined Strokes-like guitar jams, sleepy psychedelia, and post-punk stylings is a fresh, yet somehow familiar, cocktail. AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK, the band's sophomore effort, follows closely on the heels of the honky-tonk rock of their debut, but it pushes the whole even further into unexpected territory. While "Pistol of Fire" cooks like John Lee Hooker with extra backbeat and a side of beans, other tracks on HEARTBREAK mix classic-rock boogie ("Four Kicks"), swagger and desperate yowls ("The Bucket"), and hillbilly yodels ("Day Old Blues") into an engaging indie aesthetic.
As if Kings of Leon's keen songwriting, stylistic amalgam, and gutsy attack weren't enough, there is the utterly unique singing of Caleb Followill, who usually sounds as though he is heavily intoxicated or has just woken up from a nap. Followill's lazy, idiosyncratic phrasing and intonation admirably take Kings of Leon out of the realm of potentially similar bands, with singers who are content to yelp and imitate. AHA SHAKE HEARTBREAK rocks, rolls over, dreams, and gets up with a pain in its heart--a process that merits numerous listens.

Hide the Women and Children The boys are back with another barn-burning, foot-stomping, whiskey breath collection of straight up rock and roll. With a stripped down, punkish delivery, the Kings have wrested the crown of low tech rock from such media darlings as the Strokes. The Kings have a knack for melody and rhythm delivered with enormous heart. Caleb Followill's liquor-mouthed singing may be an acquired taste for some, but it continues the tradition of such giants as Jagger, Dylan and Robert Johnson. This is a very good album by a very good band. Pistol Of Fire is an instant classic. I can't wait for their next release. Long live the Kings. Unique & GREAT I've been playing, performing, teaching and composing music for 40 years ( I'm 52 ) and I know great music and musicians when I hear them. These 3 Bros. & a Cuz are GREAT song writers and musicians. They've got a great sense of music and space within the music. They give you tasteful musical lines and rhythms with a unique vocal style. These guys are the new Led Zeppelin / U2 without all the guitar soloing. GREAT song writing and stage presence while they perform. Thank GOD for these guys. Finally, GREAT NEW MUSIC!!!!!! IT's there This is the best album i've heard this year along with Don't Believe the Truth by Oasis. This is something that i have needed and missed in my music collection.
