| | Pastor Troy Face Off: Part II CD Pastor Troy Discography of CDs
(94 Customer Reviews)
The first song on FACE OFF: PART II, "WWW? (Who Want War)," finds Atlanta, Georgia's Pastor Troy in a ferocious rage, challenging all comers; however, 15 tracks later, he closes the record with the swift-moving, but tenderly inspirational, "Keep on Movin'." This stark contrast is the norm for Pastor Troy. Throughout this album and his previous records, this reverend of crunk has made a tradition out of combining a rich, sincere spirituality with a hardcore urban vibe.
FACE OFF: PART II is Pastor Troy's sequel to his successful 2001 record, and is supremely faithful in its life-in-the-now mentality, in both its lyrics and the accompanying beats. He keeps up a relentless pace, roaring "I'm coming at ya" on "Murder Man," and spinning threats over a Halloween beat on "Get Dat Money Part II." Troy wraps his dirty Southern drawl around an inspired metal mix on "Acid Rain," and wistfully reflects on the pristine ballad backdrop of "Respect Game." FACE OFF: PART II reveals just a little more of the conflicted figure that is Pastor Troy.
Personnel: Pastor Troy (rap vocals); Pimpin' Ken, Little Pere (rap vocals).
Photographer: Shannon P. McCollum.

Face Off: Part II music CDs
$12.65 On THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, Fresh avails himself admirably as a rapper, layering sweet and often provocative rhymes over a variety of backing tracks of his own conception. On the breakbeat-boasting and Whodini-esque "Nothing Compares to Love" and the Al B. Sure!-interpolating "How We Ride," Fresh reminds the listener he was around in the early days of hip-hop, conjuring up the feel of times past. Mostly, however, Fresh's eyes are squarely focused on the future, with cutting-edge beats, particularly on "Chubby Boy" and the pulsating opening single, "Real Big."
Familiar to most of the rap world as half of Big Tymers, Mannie Fresh was active in hip-hop for years before dropping his solo debut, THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, in 2004. While Fresh didn't shy away from the mic as a member of the aforementioned Southern duo, his role was primarily as a DJ and an expert beat creator (a prolific one, ...

| | Pimp C Sweet James Jones Stories CD (2005)
Face Off: Part II album
$15.05 One of Pimp C's strongest attributes is that, like the cultured pimp character from many movies, he's proficient and passionate in his ultra-violent turf, but is acutely aware of the world outside of it. He drops names like Johnny "Guitar" Watson with ease, while alternating modern crunk beats (as on "Hogg in the Game") with unique blues-funk loops (on the sinister "Get My Money"). Pimp C lives the life he preaches, and he conveys this with a harsh elegance that makes THE SWEET JAMES JONES STORIES both gripping and supremely funky.
While Southern rapper Pimp C, one half of underground heroes UGK, spins stories familiar in the world of modern hip-hop, there's a grand nature to his tales that recalls 1970s blaxploitation films. On "I'm ...

$8.99 The rest of the album provides thirteen tracks of Kelly's typically strong and sensual modern R&B. He starts off the record with a reminder that he's far from a one-note artist, coming on as hard as anyone with the anthemic single "Playa's Club," then rolls into a 1970s groove with help ...

RETROGRASS was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album.
Grisman, Hartford, and Seeger have a lot in common. They all have roots in traditional American music (folk, bluegrass, country, et al.), but coming to prominence as they did in the '60s, there was always something of the counterculture in their approach. Throughout their careers, all three men have pushed the borders of those traditions, creating new sounds that incorporated the old ways while venturing into exciting new realms. It's fitting then that the trio's collaboration should incorporate both the traditional and the unconventional.
On RETROGRASS, this supergroup takes songs from an extremely wide range of sources (from Bob Dylan to Chuck Berry to Otis Redding) and gives them an old-timey bluegrass feel. Listening to their treatment of Dylan's "Maggie's Farm," you'd think it was some public domain obscurity the boys ...
