| | Pastor Troy Face Off: Part II CD Pastor Troy Discography of CDs
(94 Customer Reviews)
FACE OFF: PART II is Pastor Troy's sequel to his successful 2001 record, and is supremely faithful in its life-in-the-now mentality, in both its lyrics and the accompanying beats. He keeps up a relentless pace, roaring "I'm coming at ya" on "Murder Man," and spinning threats over a Halloween beat on "Get Dat Money Part II." Troy wraps his dirty Southern drawl around an inspired metal mix on "Acid Rain," and wistfully reflects on the pristine ballad backdrop of "Respect Game." FACE OFF: PART II reveals just a little more of the conflicted figure that is Pastor Troy.
Personnel: Pastor Troy (rap vocals); Pimpin Ken, Little Pere (rap vocals).
The first song on FACE OFF: PART II, "WWW? (Who Want War)," finds Atlanta, Georgia's Pastor Troy in a ferocious rage, challenging all comers; however, 15 tracks later, he closes the record with the swift-moving, but tenderly inspirational, "Keep on Movin'." This stark contrast is the norm for Pastor Troy. Throughout this album and his previous records, this reverend of crunk has made a tradition out of combining a rich, sincere spirituality with a hardcore urban vibe.

| | Mind Of Mannie Fresh CD (2004)
Face Off: Part II
$12.79 Familiar to most of the rap world as half of Big Tymers, Mannie Fresh was active in hip-hop for years before dropping his solo debut, THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, in 2004. While Fresh didn't shy away from the mic as a member of the aforementioned Southern duo, his role was primarily as a DJ and an expert beat creator (a prolific one, at that--he's the driving force behind almost the entire Cash Money catalogue). While fellow Big Tymer (and Cash Money founder) Bryan "Baby" Williams enlisted a number of major artists for his first record (as Baby AKA the #1 Stunna), Mannie Fresh boldly lets his voice stand on its own, with David Banner being the only high-profile guest star here.
On THE MIND OF MANNIE FRESH, Fresh avails himself admirably as a rapper, layering sweet and often provocative rhymes over a variety of backing tracks of his own conception. On the breakbeat-boasting and Whodini-esque "Nothing Compares ...

| | Pimp C Sweet James Jones Stories CD (2005)
Face Off: Part II
$15.05 While Southern rapper Pimp C, one half of underground heroes UGK, spins stories familiar in the world of modern hip-hop, there's a grand nature to his tales that recalls 1970s blaxploitation films. On "I'm a Hustler," Pimp C weaves a vivid urban fable of a gangsta life, bolstered by an entrancing Curtis Mayfield-esque chorus. Unfortunately, he's lived that SUPERFLY life, and his second record, THE SWEET JAMES JONES STORIES, drops with Pimp C jailed for assault with a deadly weapon. However, incarceration hasn't prevented the rapper from releasing a darkly fascinating portrait of his life.
One of Pimp C's strongest attributes is that, like the ...

Face Off: Part II
$8.99 The rest of the album provides thirteen tracks of Kelly's typically strong and sensual modern R&B. He starts off the record with a reminder that he's far from a one-note artist, coming on as hard as anyone with the anthemic single "Playa's Club," then rolls into a 1970s groove with help from the always-spectacular Snoop Dogg on "Happy Summertime," before easing into a set of slow jams highlighted by the lusty "In the Kitchen" and the breezy "Slow ...

Grisman, Hartford, and Seeger have a lot in common. They all have roots in traditional American music (folk, bluegrass, country, et al.), but coming to prominence as they did in the '60s, there was always something of the counterculture in their approach. Throughout ...
