Sussex CD music Hard rock excess, complete with blues-mauling guitar riffs, fight it out with some nice haunting harmonies and occasional delicate, folky melodies on this interesting (if inessential) release, one of the last gasps of garage-psychedelia (in fact, the hard rock factor is so prominent that it probably couldn't be comfortably classified as such). Sussex music CDs The release listed is a vinyl reissue of the mid-'80s, though has been reissued on CD since then. ~ Richie Unterberger

Sussex songs. At the time of its release, and even to this day, there are few albums--sonically, conceptually, and aesthetically--quite like Pussy Galore's DIAL M FOR MOTHERFU*KER. From the title alone it's obvious that the band is out to offend, but even had it been called soemthing less outrageous, Pussy Galore's brazen, almost heartless deconstruction of what was once so proufly called rock & roll would have surely risen the ire of purists. Comprising such indie rock heavyweights as Jon Spencer, Neil Haggerty (Royal Trux and Howling Hex), Julie Cafriz (Free Kitten), and Bob Bert (Sonic Youth, Chrom Cranks); Pussy Galore played a hig-concept, deliberatly low-brow blend of arty noise-terror and sleazy rock riffage, calling to mind an unholy union of the Rolling Stones and Einstruzendze Neubauten. While tracks such as "SM 57," "Kicked Out," and "Undertaker" are primarily excercises in art-punk blurt and scrape, other tracks such as "Understand Me" and "Dick Johnson" flirt with some swaggering, near anthemic hook, making for an unsettling one-two punch. The band called it quits following their next album, but with DIAL M Pussy Galore suggested that, if nothing else, the Punk Rock is just as ripe for smashing as an other sacred musical Stone.
Out of print in the U.S.! Pussy Galore's 1989 album rated by Alternative Press as one of the top 99 albums released between 1985-95. The classic PG sound is very much intact on this release, although the production smoothes out some of the rough edges while roughing up the smoother ones! 14 tracks. EMI.
