Edwards has a gift for writing choruses that burrow under the skin, both for their melodic seductiveness and their lyrical acumen. "Away," an airy acoustic tune about an abandoned love, haunts long after listening, and the boisterous title track boasts a compelling refrain. The most effective song overall is "Copied Keys," a mid-tempo lament about being subsumed by a relationship conducted on someone else's terms. The album ends on an up note with the gently philosophical "Good Things."
Kathleen Edwards excels at simple denim-and-leather country rock that recalls the best moments of Freedy Johnston and Lucinda Williams. Like these artists, Edwards writes mournful vignettes from the POV of down-at-the-heel small-town folks, with a rueful tenderness that suggests compassion beyond her years. Edwards sings in a pretty-yet-tomboyish voice that conveys longing, frustration, and often a vivifying redemption. Tom Petty sideman Benmont Tench and Sarah McLachlan's mentor Pierre Marchand help out on keyboards, while guitarist (and occasional co-writer) Colin Cripps provides tasteful leads that take flight when Edwards's vocals hover closer to the ground.
Personnel: Kathleen Edwards (vocals, acoustic guitar, banjo); Colin Cripps (electric guitar, tambourine); Eric Heywood (pedal steel guitar); Richard Bell (accordion); Benmont Tench (piano, organ); Pierre Marchand (piano); Kevin McGarragher (bass guitar); Joel Anderson (drums).
Entertainment Weekly (p.140) - Ranked #4 in Entertainment Weekly's 'Top Ten Records of the Year' -- "Edwards is that rarity -- a modern-day songwriter who loves a good story and memorable characters." Entertainment Weekly (No. 809, p.71) - "[T]here's dignity and strength in [Edward's] stoic voice....[She's a] tough alt-country cookie..." - Grade: A Uncut (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[An] eloquent set of songs about absence and change." Mojo (Publisher) (p.98) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[A] strong album....[F]or all the band's rich resonance, she shines brightest when Cripps holds the kilowatts..." Back To Me
$12.29 There's a certain vastness of space in Kathleen Edwards's country-pop compositions, a quietude that seems to brew only north of the U.S.-Canadian border. The Toronto singer-songwriter's 2000 debut, FAILER, plays like a slightly peppier HARVEST MOON with a more honeyed ...

Back To Me
$12.05 WORLD WITHOUT TEARS was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album. "Righteously" was nominated for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.

| | Tift Merritt Tambourine CD (2004)
Back To Me
$12.59 Following in the footsteps of alt-country icons Shelby Lynne, Allison Moorer, and Maria McKee, Tift Merritt gilds her sophomore effort, TAMBOURINE, with country-inflected soul, a stylistic crossroads where Nashville and Muscle Shoals meet. Teaming up with Black Crowes/Jayhawks producer George Drakoulias, Merritt doles out healthy servings of roots-rock that include the chugging "Your Love Made a U-Turn" (with its bubbling bass and chirping harmonies), the jangly "Stray Paper," and the organ-smothered "Wait ...
| | Lucinda Williams Live @ The Fillmore West CDs (2005) Digipak
Back To Me
$14.35 Never one to tread the expected path, Lucinda Williams followed her big breakthrough album, CAR WHEELS ON A GRAVEL ROAD, with a pair of low-key records full of sad, quiet, fragile songs (interrupted by the occasional barn-burner). LIVE @ THE FILLMORE concentrates heavily on those latter two releases, unleashing all the intense, burning emotions that lay at their core, making plain the inherent frisson lurking below the surface of such ostensibly laconic tunes as "Lonely Girls" and "Righteously." Meanwhile, songs that already had plenty ...

| | Cajun Playboys Cajun Party! CD (1992)
Back To Me
$14.09 Two-step heaven? Well, close to it; if the sound of a fiddle and a button accordion gets your blood racing then you owe it to yourself to let the Cajun Playboys come into your life. While there's nothing blatantly ground-breaking going on here, the Playboys do sneak a little bit of country and early rock & roll flavor into their arrangements. It's not overt, but it's there, more in the way ...

| | Ivory Joe Hunter Jukebox Hits CD (2006)
Back To Me
$9.79 By the early 1940's, Ivory Joe Hunter had become a prolific songwriter and piano player in the style of Fats Waller, but Hunter was a bit restless and had the idea of somehow combining the influences of the blues and country music that he had heard so much of in his native Texas. He looked to the West to fulfill his desire to record his own music, and in 1942 moved to the Los Angeles area. ...
