The Soundtrack for director Ronald F. Maxwell's Civil War film GODS AND GENERALS consists of a score by John Frizell and Randy Edelman, book-ended by original songs from ex-October Project vocalist Mary Fahl and folk/rock icon Bob Dylan. The former track, "Going Home" is a haunting, Celtic-influenced piece that sounds similar to the best work of June Tabor and Maddy Prior. Dylan's contribution is a typically insightful and poignant look at a difficult topic, and lends the proceedings a quiet grandeur. Musically, "'Cross The Green Mountain" recalls his early-'70s work with Leon Russell. Frizell and Edelman's score is appropriately melancholy and sweeping, perfectly reflecting the epic proportions and painful subject matter of the film. The best tracks pair the symphony orchestra with country fiddler extraordinaire Mark O'Connor and Chieftan's frontman Paddy Mahoney, who impart an air of 19th-century authenticity.

Volume 24 of the Hyperion Schubert Edition is a Schubertiad built around the composer's settings of Goethe. The settings are taken from throughout Schubert's career in versions for solo and multiple voices, so the composer's ever-changing responses to the poet sit side by side, early and late. In addition to such oddities as "Erlkönig" arranged for three voices there are no less than three settings of one lyric and two settings each of four more. Several famous songs also appear here including "Rastlose Liebe," "Ganymed," and "Der Rattenfänger."
Performances are variable, predictably when four singers are involved. The contributions by John Mark Ainsley and Simon Keenlyside are very fine as is the work of the London Schubert Chorale. Christine Schäfer and Michael George are less consistent but each has special moments. The accompaniments and annotations by Graham Johnson are as fine as ever.
