Ray Norcia is known as a blues harmonica ace, but when all is said and done, his greatest strength may well be his voice, and when he sings at his best, he brings a touch of country and a little bit of jazz swing to the blues. Hands Across the Table, his third release on David Earl's Severn Records, and the first to feature new guitarist Paul Size, doesn't push for too much. There's plenty of harp soloing here, naturally, and things are helped out immensely by the presence of the Providence Horns on several tracks, which adds a solid punch to the rhythm section, but things don't really rise much above journeyman blues until halfway through the album when Norcia decides to let in the country R&B on the Fats Domino-styled reworking of Frankie Laine's "That's My Desire." A case could be made that Norcia is the Charlie Rich of East Coast blues, and on "I Wanna Marry You Girl" his vocal strikes close to the spot where country and the blues still have a shared agenda. His voice even sounds a little bit like the great Jack Teagarden on the two best tracks here, the jazzy "River Stay 'Way from My Door" and the magnificent "The Last Blues Song," which features the subtle and perfectly nuanced phrasing of a master vocalist. No one is suggesting that Norcia toss away his harps -- his driving (but not overdriven) tone on harmonica is always a plus -- but this man can sing, and not just the blues. ~ Steve Leggett

Sugar Ray & the Bluetones are back with "Hands Across the Table." Following up "Sugar Ray & the Bluetones (featuring Monster Mike Welch - SEE #19)," The Bluetones deliver their signature brand of hard driving blues complete with guitar by new Bluetone Pa

Hands Across The Table Music Review

Customer Hands Across The Table Reviews

Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) 4 stars

4 stars Another Polished Performance
Sugar Rae (Norcia)’s latest album is another fine release from the man. This is pretty much a band effort. All members contribute and none really dominate. It’s good to hear Sugar Ray plays more harmonica then we have heard for a while. He’s a very talented player. His vocals have graced many recordings. He has been a vocalist-for-hire on many blues releases, for good reason. He’s one of blues’ finest vocalists. Special mention to pianist Anthony Geraci who never gets the accolades that he deserves. Mostly original material performed very professionally. Well worth adding to your blues collection.

The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working ...

Drew is a day-dreamer and late-sleeper. He is a doodler and entrepreneur. He also makes music, lots of music: cigarette-butts-in-Chinese-food, insomniac, vodka-breathe, bedroom-pop music. Late at night, he draws graffiti of dead TV's. He is scrappy and young, and moved to NYC from Philadelphia to pursue the momentum behind his snowballing world of doodles, films, and songs. He currently resides on the Lower East Side where he plays shows regularly and survives on a diet of tuna and spaghetti.

I haven't stopped listening since I bought the EP... everyone I know needs to hear this." -Pulver Radio ____"Whistles and chugging guitars punctuate Drew & the Medicinal Pen'sfolksy bedroom pop, which is always nice. We're going to go daydream now." -L Magazine ____"(Drew's) music reminds us of the traveling souls we have met and bonded with on occasion... it's his edge that intrigues us." -The Fevered Brain of Radio Mike Show________"Having seen Drew play solo before at a Folk You! show and being blown away by his performance, I had high expectations of this new EP by him (under his largely one man band name of Drew & The Medicinal Pen), and I am happy to say I was not let down. At times reminding me of Rhett Miller's solo albums, "dream, dream, fail, repeat", has an interesting mix of upbeat folk-rock songs, that are more rock then they are folk, and some mellower ...
