Ray Norcia is known as a blues harmonica ace, but when all is said and done, his greatest strength may well be his voice, and when he sings at his best, he brings a touch of country and a little bit of jazz swing to the blues. Hands Across the Table, his third release on David Earl's Severn Records, and the first to feature new guitarist Paul Size, doesn't push for too much. There's plenty of harp soloing here, naturally, and things are helped out immensely by the presence of the Providence Horns on several tracks, which adds a solid punch to the rhythm section, but things don't really rise much above journeyman blues until halfway through the album when Norcia decides to let in the country R&B on the Fats Domino-styled reworking of Frankie Laine's "That's My Desire." A case could be made that Norcia is the Charlie Rich of East Coast blues, and on "I Wanna Marry You Girl" his vocal strikes close to the spot where country and the blues still have a shared agenda. His voice even sounds a little bit like the great Jack Teagarden on the two best tracks here, the jazzy "River Stay 'Way from My Door" and the magnificent "The Last Blues Song," which features the subtle and perfectly nuanced phrasing of a master vocalist. No one is suggesting that Norcia toss away his harps -- his driving (but not overdriven) tone on harmonica is always a plus -- but this man can sing, and not just the blues. ~ Steve Leggett

Hands Across The Table music CDs
$12.59 The long established musical relationship between guitarists Dave Specter and Steve Freund goes back nearly 20 years, when Specter sought out Freund as a guitar teacher. They have shared many stages, but this marks the first occasion that they have recorded together. In the best of the Chicago blues tradition as illustrated by the legendary Delmark label, Is What It Is is a loose, swinging, tough blues date filled with great tunes, inspired ...
| | Ronnie Earl Duke Meets The Earl CD (2005)
Hands Across The Table songs
$14.29 The Duke Meets the Earl seems like an obvious album, pairing two of New England's finest contemporary blues guitarists, Duke Robillard and Ronnie Earl, who both share the same sort of hard, clear tone in their playing (Earl actually replaced Robillard in Roomful of Blues when the latter left the group for a solo career). For Earl, who has been working in a ...

| | Drew & The Medicinal Pen Dream Dream Fail Repeat CD (2007)
Hands Across The Table album
$6.39 Drew is a day-dreamer and late-sleeper. He is a doodler and entrepreneur. He also makes music, lots of music: cigarette-butts-in-Chinese-food, insomniac, vodka-breathe, bedroom-pop music. Late at night, he draws graffiti of dead TV's. He is scrappy and young, and moved to NYC from Philadelphia to pursue the momentum behind his snowballing world of doodles, films, and songs. He currently resides on the Lower East Side where he plays shows regularly and survives on a diet of tuna and spaghetti.*** IF SOLD OUT HERE, CD ALSO AVAILABLE THROUGH iTunes and by e-mailing DrewandtheMedicinalPen(at)Gmail.com directly *** ____"These songs are clever, earnest, well performed, and worthy of your time. I haven’t stopped listening since I bought the EP... everyone I know needs to hear this." -Pulver Radio ____"Whistles and chugging guitars punctuate Drew & the Medicinal Pen'sfolksy bedroom pop, which is always nice. We're going to go daydream now." -L Magazine ____"(Drew's) music reminds us of the traveling souls we have met and bonded with on occasion... it's his edge that intrigues us." -The Fevered Brain of Radio Mike Show________"Having seen Drew play solo before at a Folk You! show and being blown away by his performance, I had high expectations of this new EP by him (under his largely one man band name of Drew & The Medicinal Pen), and I am happy to say I was not let down. At times reminding me of Rhett Miller's solo albums, "dream, dream, fail, repeat", has an interesting mix of upbeat folk-rock songs, that are more rock then they are folk, and some mellower songs, each song leading in and out of one another in a perfectly entwined lucid dream-like musical landscape. But what's hard to miss about this album is it's infectiousness. "Hole in my sail" includes a clap along beat that is hard to not clap along to, "a city was born" contains ...
