Koffin Kats album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl ...

Given the time frame, the track listing is top-heavy with mid-period (1976-'79) classics, with only 1974's ...
| | Atomic Kitten Feels So Good CD (2002) Bonus Track
Koffin Kats CD music
$10.29 Atomic Kitten are a dance-pop trio from the U.K. that mix disco-influenced beats with mainstream melodic pop, and FEELS SO GOOD, the follow-up to the group's debut, delivers the goods. Included here are the singles "It's Ok" and "The Tide Is High (Get the Feeling)."
Feels So Good maintained Atomic Kitten's status as one of the U.K.'s most successful pop groups, with a pair of number one singles and another that reached number three plucked from it. Their first album recorded with Jenny Frost is nearly as solid as Right Now, with more playful chemistry evident between the three members. (Frost replaced original member Kerry Katona, who departed after the debut became a success; oddly enough, once Frost settled in, Right Now was redone and re-released, with her vocals put in place of Katona's.) Though the three biggest hits -- "It's OK!," "The Last Goodbye," and a cover of Blondie's cover of "The Tide Is High" -- are well-executed, easygoing pop songs, the group is at its best when it takes on the role of a modern disco act (as heard on "Feels So Good," "Love Won't Wait," and "Softer the Touch"). Like the debut, this album wasn't issued in the U.S. Instead, Virgin combined highlights from the two albums for a self-titled quasi-compilation, released in 2003. Despite the fact that Atomic Kitten's singles are often as strong as the ones from the popular U.S. acts, the disc did nothing to establish them as a successful act in that country. ~ Andy Kellman
Rather than merely issue Atomic Kitten's second album a few months after its initial U.K. release date, Virgin U.S. took the opportunity to make the trio's stateside debut a combination of songs from that album (Feels So Good) and 2001's Right Now. This self-titled album came out just after group member Natasha emerged victorious in the U.K.'s 21st Rear of the Year competition. (It's true; look it up.) Both of the U.K. albums represented here fared extremely well in the group's homeland and spawned several Top Ten hits, all of which are included on this. Two numbingly tedious remakes -- one of the Bangles' "Eternal Flame," another of Blondie's version of "Tide Is High" -- are balanced by a small clutch of dance-pop songs that rank favorably with any of their American competitors. "Be With You" is the clear-cut best, ...

| | Conference Call Spirals: The Berlin Concert CD (2004)
Koffin Kats songs
$17.09 Recorded live at B-Flat Berlin, Berlin, Germany on March 11, 2003.
Conference Call is a quartet comprised of adventurous and versatile musicians, each of whom are also talented composers. For their Berlin concert, Conference Call mostly plays the first "three" lengthy compositions continuously. The episodic music includes some stirring sections to "Dreierlei" (although it ends inconclusively) and a memorable tango, "Little Pet's Diner," that is always close to the edge. Gebhard Ullmann is fine on bass clarinet and soprano but particularly expressive on tenor. "The Announcement" is a rant against the invasion of Iraq by the U.S. and "Three" continues the mood with a verbal improvisation leading into some violent group interplay. The quiet "Translucent Tones" (with Ullmann on bass clarinet) is an effective contrast and precedes the intense "No Hazmats." All in all, this is a stimulating date and nearly everything works, with each of the musicians (who include pianist Michael Jefry Stevens, bassist Joe Fonda, and drummer George Schuller) having their feature spots. ~ Scott Yanow
Conference Call's third release catches them live at B-Flat in Berlin, Germany on March 11th, 2003. Â The material features compositions from each musician in this all-star group's line-up, including the versatile Schuller who replaces Matt Wilson and Han Bennink respectively from the band's first two recordings. Musicians: Gebhard Ullmann (bassclarinet, tenor and soprano saxophone), Michael Jefry Stevens (piano), Joe Fonda (bass), George Schuller (drums, cymbals, bells)*From All About Jazz:Hey, come on over and listen in to a Conference Call. There have been two well worth listening to in the past. As before, there is a new drummer in tow, George Schuller coming in place of Matt Wilson, who in turn had replaced Han Bennink. Sure, Wilson and Bennink have individualistic styles, but don't turn a deaf ear: Schuller's ...
