Dave's solo debut Call Me Lonesome (2005) features guests Rosie Flores, Rick Shea (Dave Alvin Band), Ron Rutowski (Glen Campbell Band), Danny White (Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers), PH Naffah (Refreshments, Peacemakers), Steve Larson (Dead Hot Workshop, Peacemakers), Mario Moreno (Forbidden Pigs), Diana Lee, Steve Borick, John Rickard, Billy Parker, Ted Belledin and Chris Gough. The disc's ten original compositions amply demonstrate Insley's range, moving easily from classic Honky-Tonk to Bluegrass, Tin Pan Alley and Rock & Roll. Within the production, fiddles and steel guitars blend with clarinet, mandolin and accordion for a very satisfying mix, the perfect backdrop for Insley's voice & writing. CML tracks include "There's Gonna Be A Few Change," "Cowboy Lullaby," and "Just Call Me Lonesome".
Dave Insley's music is steeped in traditional country. Much like kindred spirits Junior Brown, Wayne Hancock, and the Derailers, Insley harks back to the days (and nights) when honky tonks populated the American southwest. With his plaintive twang, he sings about such timeless country music themes as love and loss, farming and cowboys. He even has two tunes with the word "mountain" in the title. Standout numbers like "There's Gonna Be a Few Changes," "I'm Afraid of Dyin'," and the title track would have fit in well with the tunes that Ernest Tubb and Buck Owens used to rule the country airwaves. The tongue-twisting ditty "Rob Boy" sounds like something Johnny Cash might have followed "Boy Named Sue" up with. These comparisons aren't to say that Insley is a derivative artist; it's just that he often works within traditional styles. He isn't such a traditionalist, however, that he won't let the electric guitars rock out at times. Both "Laid to Waste" and the soul-charged "Own a Mountain" flash some arena rock riffs. More interesting, from an arrangement standpoint, is the occasional use of saxophones and even a clarinet -- instruments not often associated with country music. While a little jarring at first, these horns do make sense as Insley's music is drawn from the roadhouses, where R&B and honky tonk weren't far removed from each other. Ted Belledin's clarinet gives an unusual twist to "Gilded Cage"'s Western swing. Besides Belledin's clarinet and sax work, Insley also gets strong support from such players as veteran Dave Alvin guitarist Rick Shea, one-time Glen Campbell fiddler Ron Rutkowski, and rockabilly filly Rosie Flores, who lends her vocals to "Maricopa Mountains." Call Me Lonesome is an impressive debut filled with plenty of old-school country charms but nicely updated with a few contemporary touches. ~ Michael Berick

P.S. A CD to buy soon Submitted by giuseppesandro.cimenton (italy) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Call me lucky Dave's a veteran in the music scene having been a part of the band the Trophy Husbands, but his solo debut stunned me. This is one the best albums to come out in quite some time. A great mix of Country, roots rock, folk. I can't really pigeon hole this in one genre, but I will say it's a great, honest display of songwriting, and musicianship. Keep 'em coming Dave! Call Me Lonesome music CDs
$11.89 Modern day outlaw Jack Ingram brought his Beat Up Ford band to Billy Bob's Texas earlier in 2003 and left with a burning, rowdy, unruly set on tape. For those who've never encountered Ingram and his band live, this document is as solid as it gets. It's rough, raw, and outta control. Included are 15 tracks, most of which are ...

Call Me Lonesome CD music
$18.09 Nick Lowe is the sort of artist whose work as a musician, songwriter, and producer is so unpretentious and straightforward that many folks tend to overlook how strong it is, and how diverse his repertoire has been. From the hippie-friendly country rock of his early recordings with Brinsley Schwarz and the straight-ahead pub rock of Rockpile to the engagingly smart-assed pure pop of his early solo work and ...

Call Me Lonesome album
$10.39 Anyone who has ever saw Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band between 1975 and 1981 knows one of the reasons they were among the best live bands in America is they had three members with the power and charisma to make great frontmen -- Springsteen, Clarence Clemons, and "Miami Steve" Van Zandt. In 1982, while Springsteen was laboring over Born in the U.S.A., Van Zandt -- who'd already proved his considerable chops as a producer, songwriter, and arranger working with Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes and Gary U.S. Bonds -- stepped away from the E Street Band to launch a solo project, Little Steven & the Disciples of Soul, and in many ways the first Little Steven album, Men Without Women, is the finest album the Asbury Jukes never made. Like the Jukes best work, Men Without Women blends the muscle and swagger of Jersey shore rock & roll with the horn-fueled heart and soul of classic R&B, and here Van Zandt was willing to push himself further in both directions at once. With a five-piece horn section blazing throughout (featuring Richie "La Bamba" Rosenberg leading a crew of former Jukes brass players) and former Rascals Dino Danelli and Felix Cavaliere on hand, this album's blue-eyed soul credentials are unimpeachable, but Van Zandt's guitar (and Jean Beauvior's bass) speak with the sound and fury of a true roots rock rebel. While Van Zandt's songwriting was always impressive, Men Without Women's best moments expressed a degree of passion, vulnerability, and determined fervor he hadn't quite permitted himself in the past (he also began to express the political concerns that would dominate his later work on "Under the Gun"), and if Van Zandt was a less precise vocalist than "Southside" ...
