| | Carl Perkins Rocks CD - Import Carl Perkins Discography of CDs
Carl Perkins was one of rock & roll's first bona fide guitar heroes, a fine songwriter and an engaging and heartfelt singer, and if he didn't have quite the same magnetism of his one-time labelmates Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis, that doesn't change the fact that he made a handful of great records and was still picking strong up until his passing in 1998. However, there have been precious few career-inclusive compilations exploring Perkins -- most folks don't seem interested in much beyond his early sides for Sun (admittedly they do represent his greatest work), with his later material recorded for a number of labels usually getting short shrift. Leave it to the folks at the German Bear Family label to finally fill this void -- Carl Rocks is an excellent 31-track collection that begins with one of Perkins' first sessions for Sun in 1955 and closes with a terrific cover of John Hiatt's "Memphis in the Meantime" cut for Mercury in 1990. Carl Rocks is anchored by Perkins' Sun masters, and when you have songs like "Honey Don't," "Dixie Fried," "Matchbox," and "Put Your Cat Clothes On" in your catalog, it's no wonder you'd want to lead with them, but the lesser-known cuts such as "Rockin' Record Hop," "Jive After Five," and "Sittin' on Top of the World" prove that Perkins didn't need Sam Phillips to make a good record. And this collection lives up to its name -- Carl hits a solid rockin' groove throughout this compilation, and if you're looking for a Perkins set to get a party started, this will do the trick. Along with classic tunes and great audio remastering, Carl Rocks features an outstanding package with plenty of rare photos and superb liner notes from Hank Davis and Colin Escott -- this is as strong a single-disc Carl Perkins set you can buy, and along with offering a more complete view of his history than most packages available, it's lots of fun and a potent reminder of just how strong he was at the top of his game. ~ Mark Deming
Incredibly, this is the first full career retrospective of Carl Perkins. This is the very best of the groundbreaking Sun recordings, the best of the late '50s/early '60s Columbia recordings, the cream of the ultra-rare Decca sides, and the later Columbia Rocks Review

Rocks album
$6.99 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Bob Dylan's career has always been about defying expectations. Accordingly he followed 1997's much-heralded TIME OUT OF MIND with a marked about-face. Where its predecessor was a bleak emotional landscape full of languid atmospheres, existential sentiments, and graveyard vocal delivery, LOVE AND THEFT finds Dylan much more energized and hopeful. Instead of swamp-like textures, we get sharp, cracking bar-band blues, and lissome ballads with a '20s/'30s feel. The old codger has never sounded more spry; after observing that "summer days and summer nights are gone," he follows up with "I know a place where there's still something going on." Elsewhere he's variously hunting bear, standing on a table to make a toast, burning down a house, and starting a new ...

| | Lester Bowie Fire This Time CD (1992)
Rocks songs
$12.59 Recorded live at the Moonwalker Club, Aarburg, Switzerland on May 1, 1992. Includes liner notes by Lester Bowie.
This warm and blistering set by Lester Bowie's 10-piece Brass Fantasy--four trumpets, two trombones, one French horn, a tuba, and two sets of percussion--was recorded live in Switzerland in 1992. The compositions, which are punctuated with graceful, occasionally humorous solos, touch on the full breadth of Bowie's and the ensemble's interests and skills. For instance, a pair of songs by Michael Jackson shows the ensemble's interest in contemporary pop. There're also Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Three for the Festival" and Jimmie Lunceford's "Siesta for the Fiesta." "For Louis," by Phillip Wilson (to whom the album is dedicated) is another well-suited and finely executed piece. The show closes with "The Great Pretender," one of Brass Fantasy's signature numbers.
Originally recorded Live at the Moonwalker Club, Aarburg, Switzerland on May 1, 1992. The ensemble features Lester Bowie, E.J. Allen, Gerald Brazel, Tony Barrero (trumpet), Frank Lacy, Louis Bonilla (trombone), Vincent Chancey (French horn), Bob Stewart (tuba), Vinnie Johnson (drums), Famoudou ...
