| | Fischerspooner Odyssey CD Fischerspooner Discography of CDs
(6 Customer Reviews)
After the tremendous response to the hit single "Emerge," Fischerspooner's 2001 debut album was re-worked and re-released in 2003 as #1. The duo delivered ODYSSEY in 2005. Group masterminds Casey Spooner and Warren Fischer still channel the spirit of early-1980s electronic pop by referencing Depeche Mode, Dead or Alive, Yaz, and Erasure. But while they come across as electro-pop traditionalists, they are firmly entrenched in the aesthetics of the DJ and '90s club culture. The sophistication of their stylistic brew and formidable studio skills is apparent throughout ODYSSEY.
In addition to their sleek, beautiful sonic surfaces, Fischerspooner construct mesmerizing synth patterns and melodic hooks that are immediately accessible. Sure to rival "Emerge" as the group's most popular dance anthem, "Just Let Go" rides along on a propulsive programmed drum beat, a winding synth-bass line, and an ecstatic chorus. "Cloud" is a dreamy reverie, contrasting with the electro-funk of "Never Win." Even when Fischerspooner gets political ("We Need a War"), their grip on pitch-perfect neo-New Wave never falters, making ODYSSEY an excellent listen from beginning to end.

| | Essential Cyndi Lauper CD (2003) Remastered
Odyssey
$6.79 Recorded between 1983 & 1996. Includes liner notes by Davil Wild.
Cyndi Lauper is a textbook example of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous dictum "There are no second acts in American lives." The pixieish singer had a few hits after her late mid-1980s domination of the country's popular imagination, and has continued to release fine, mature pop albums all along. Yet her public image is so frozen in stone as that "unusual" girl who sang "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time" that many people have never been able to entirely move past the old multicolored- hair/thrift-shop-clothes image. Fully half of SHE'S SO UNUSUAL appears here, along with eight other hits, ...
| | Bloc Party Silent Alarm CD (2005)
Odyssey
$10.79 On this immensely appealing debut, SILENT ALARM, the London-based quartet Bloc Party fulfills the promise of their barnstorming 2004 singles "Banquet" and "She's Hearing Voices." Led by magnetic frontman Kele Okereke, the band extracts the most fascinating aspects of the previous 25 years of British indie rock and fuses them into a new entity--complete with smarts and heart--never delving into retro-kitsch or slavish imitation.
Okerere's urgent yelp most often recalls a fired-up incarnation of the Cure's Robert Smith, but the sounds the group creates echo everything from Gang of Four's staccato militarism ("Banquet") to the reverberating guitars of the Chameleons ("Price of Gas"). At times, ...
| | Kaiser Chiefs Employment CD (2005)
Odyssey
$8.49 Emerging in an era rife with New Wave rip-off artists, the Kaiser Chiefs ran the risk of their sharp suits, angular haircuts, and early-1980s influences being taken the wrong way. While many of their peers shamelessly aped the most obvious aspects of the Cure, New Order, et al, Kaiser Chiefs (the name comes from a South African soccer team) much more subtly incorporated ...

| | Lcd Soundsystem Sound Of Silver CD (2007)
Odyssey
$9.39 As wryly noted on LCD Soundsystem's debut 2002 single, "Losing My Edge," in the underground music arms race, aging hipsters are losing ground against young upstarts who are (perhaps) unaware of their own influences. And if influences are the stuff with which post-millennial musicians are made, Murphy has trumped us all. Touching on reference points ranging from disco, krautrock, Bowie, house, and post-punk, to singer-songwriter types, SOUND OF SILVER is a veritable catalog of left-field cool. Leading off with the slow-boil, hypnotic opener, "Get Innocuous"--which sounds a bit like a reprise of "Losing My Edge" crossed with Kraftwerk's "The Robots"--the album moves from dance-floor stormers to plaintive piano numbers without batting an eye. On "North American Scum," ...
