WILDFLOWER is an exotic addition to the discography of jazz pianist Keiko Matsui. Known predominately as a smooth jazz artist, Matsui has released over a dozen CDs in the US since 1986 and has become known for her sparse, evocative piano compositions that float over sweeping, majestic chords. While her last few albums ventured closer to New Age music, WILDFLOWER makes a surprising move toward sophisticated dance/lounge grooves. The first track, "Flashback," incorporates textural sound treatments with Matsui's reserved piano playing, creating a tension that captivates the listener for the entire album. "Facing Up, " the song on the album that comes closest to pop, features unusual vocal samples and a pulsating, dance-friendly beat. Although the most popular contemporary jazz tends to fall into the "lite" category, trumpeter Chris Botti avoids painting himself into this corner by sticking with an approach more reminiscent of Chet Baker. For his 2004 album, WHEN I FALL IN LOVE, Botti takes it a step further by employing the London Session Orchestra to provide him with lush accompaniment on a program predominantly made up of standards. The Oregon native adds further layers to the album's sound by calling on singer Paula Cole, whose burnished vocals provide a fine foil on a brush-stroked version of Irving Berlin's "What'll I Do?" and "How Love Should Be," with its subtle mix of piano and strings.
Along with exquisite takes on Rodgers & Hart ("My Romance") and the Gershwins ("Someone to Watch Over Me"), Botti also shows a knack for the cinematic nuance of Ennio Morricone ("Cinema Paradiso") and the pop-jazz of Sade ("No Ordinary Love"). The handsome horn player even ropes old employer Sting and bandmates Dominic Miller and Vinnie Colaiuta into lending their talents on the samba-flavored "La Belle Dame Sans Regrets" (composed by Sting and Miller). Originally released in 1967, Astrud Gilberto's BEACH SAMBA is one of the Brazilian songstress' classic albums. The bossa nova craze--ignited in 1963, by Gilberto herself, with her lovely, artless vocal on Stan Getz's "The Girl from Ipanema"--was winding down. The album sees Gilberto stretching beyond her usual collection of bossa novas and sambas, though the title track and "Nao Bate O Corocao" are two of her best, into relaxed, swinging versions of such pop standards as "Misty Roses" and "My Foolish Heart."
