Singer/composer Michael Gira's 1980s band Swans, with their considerable darkness/bleakness quotient, were perhaps the only outfit that could make Joy Division and Leonard Cohen sound practically jolly. Gira's Angels of Light project, however, is another matter entirely. While the Angels' music is still somewhat grim in lyrical content and vocal timbre, the overwhelmingly intense Swans-like approach has largely given way to a bittersweet melodic presentation. The autumnal, reflective tone is enhanced by Gira's neo-folk proteges Akron/Family, who serve as the backing band.
The title THE ANGELS OF LIGHT SING "OTHER PEOPLE" refers not to other songwriters, but rather songs about particular people who've inspired/affected Gira in one way or another. He must know some fascinating characters: "Michael's White Hands" is a tapestry of buzzing, jangling string instruments conveying a chant/rant about a disorienting parallel world, the likes of which the Doors' Jim Morrison used to visit. "To Live Through Someone" has a catchy lilt that recalls British Isles' folk music, and the sweetly sung background vocals provide a welcome contrast to Gira's chilly, yet strangely compassionate, old-hermit-of-the-forest delivery. For those feeling haunted the memory of someone (or some particular time), SING "OTHER PEOPLE" may be an ideal form of musical catharsis.

Gold Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I Love Cream Bought it. Loved it. Any CD that includes "Deserted Cities of the Heart" has to be a classic. If it has a live recording of "Crossroads" as well, then it's sublime. Only complaint is .....where is "As You Said"? There isn't a better CD to buy! To get a better CD than this one in your collection, you would have to ask the band to give you one from them. This is a real "best of" CD. When I received this CD in the mail, I listened to all of the tracks and I enjoyed all of the prodigy that they had shown in earlier years. This music doesn't show age, it is and it will stay relevant to all that appreciate musicians with the status of "genius" in rock-n-roll.

When Clapton Was King After experiencing the disastrous new Blackie 'Cream' DVD, I bought this for the live disk, and it was love at first listen!
The trio is magnificent, and the sound quality is stunning. I've ordered 'Live Cream' to compliment, and my horrible Royal Albert DVD will be for sale on ebay one of these days.

A way better and excellent Cream CD collection! I'm happy that the song "Wrapping Paper" that was not a hit single on any of their 1966 to 1969 studio albums ever. Is not on this two CD Cream compilation set anymore. You can only find that song on Cream's Those Were The Days box set and The Very Best of Cream. Gold has all of my favorite classic songs like "I Feel Free", "Sunshine Of Your Love", "Tales Of Brave Ulyses", "Strange Brew" and also "White Room". Also on this CD they put out a few really good album songs on Gold from "World Of Pain", "Passing The Time", "Doing That Scrapyard Thing" and "What A Bringdown". From CD one to number two there's also some really good live performances from Eric Clapton with his Cream band on here like "Sleepy Time", "Rollin' And Tumblin'" and "Toad". This is the CD I'm keeping for now because it's way better than The Very Best Of Cream CD. And I don't plan on giving away or selling it either myself anymore. When it comes to a ground-breaking, iconic band like the Who, dubbing an anthology THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is no small claim. The kicker here is that it happens to be the truth. Without venturing into the realm of the box set, there's never been such a definitive batch of Who tunes all under one roof before. Virtually all the bases are covered here, from such attitude-laden ...
| | Deep Purple Who Do We Think We Are? CD (1973) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Gold
$10.45 After establishing itself as a hard-rock giant, thanks to endless touring and the release of such milestone records as MACHINE HEAD and IN ROCK, Deep Purple was in a state of turmoil when it went into the studio to record 1972's WHO DO WE THINK WE ARE? Despite all the infighting, the band pulled together long enough to record seven tracks that only bolstered the band's reputation.
The best-known song, "Woman From Tokyo," boasted a riff as memorable as the one that defined "Smoke on the Water" and was later admitted by Ritchie Blackmore to have been cribbed from Eric Clapton's "Cat Squirrel." Although Blackmore's always-impressive riffing stands out on such songs as "Mary Long" and "Place ...
