While not much was heard from the notoriously prolific Ryan Adams in the year following his flurry of 2003 releases (ROCK N ROLL and the two LOVE IS HELL EPs), 2005's COLD ROSES indicates that the singer/songwriter was plenty busy. This double album finds Adams working with a new band, the Cardinals. Fans of Adams's former group Whiskeytown will welcome the sound of COLD ROSES, which roots itself in Neil Young-influenced folk-rock, and easy-going country-rock on the order of the Flying Burrito Brothers and the Eagles.
Like most of Adams's efforts, this album is polished, assured, and pleasurable, with strong songwriting at the fore throughout. The opener, "Magnolia Mountain," sets the tone--a warm, back-porch vibe tinged with melancholy and buoyed by Adams's emotive warble. Sometimes Adams downshifts to straight folk ("Rosebud"); at other times, he is more pop-minded ("Cherry Lane"), while mixing in simple, swaying melodies ("When Will You Come Back Home") and the occasional blues-based rocker ("Beautiful Sorta"). Despite the stylistic variations, COLD ROSES is extremely cohesive, and represents a welcome return to Adams's early sound.

Ryan Adams' Return to Basics. After two albums and two E.P.'s of musical exploration where Ryan Adams sought to expand his musical lexicon, especially on his last full length album Rock and Roll, Adams' has returned to from whence he came. On Cold Roses Adam's returns to the straight up Alt-Country of his solo debut Heartbreaker.
This time around, gone is the brash and edgy, Country-punk of hid mid-twenties, and in is a wiser, more mature and refined musician. Musically, Adams' gives nods to artists such as The Allman Brothers Band and Steve Earle. The tunes are not as catchy as on Heartbreaker nor as accesible as Gold, but they are solid. The more you listen, the more you discover.
There is a bit of filler and, the truth be told, the album could have been edited down to just a single, exceptional disc. That is why I give it only 3 out of 5. But, the strong material warrants a 4 on its own. Submitted by bduhamel (Woodside, Queens, NY.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
alt-country at its best? I can't seem to get enough of this CD (these CD's). On the way to work, while I'm at work, on the way home, and throughout the rest of the day this latest Ryan Adams release is constantly spinning in my player. This could possibly be my personal pick for CD of the year.
Cold Roses has replaced Demolition as my favorite Ryan Adams record. For anyone who has heard of Ryan Adams and has mixed feelings about his music, I believe Cold Roses will change your mind for the better. Just get it. Today. Submitted by Tigerspy (Detroit, MI. USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Cold Roses album
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially ...

| | Adams, Ryan & The Cardinals Jacksonville City Nights CD (2005)
Cold Roses songs
$12.39 Ryan Adams's sophomore album with his Cardinals backing band, and his second studio offering of 2005, JACKSONVILLE CITY NIGHTS finds the ever-prolific singer/songwriter in his twangy, Gram Parsons-inspired persona. In fact, on "Dear John," jazz/pop superstar Norah Jones plays Emmylou Harris to Adams's Parsons, as the two settle into a slow, smoky duet.
While JACKSONVILLE has an energetic moment or two ("The Hardest Part"), it never wanders anywhere near Adams's amped-up ROCK N ROLL territory. In general, this is melancholy, down-tempo alt-country, which, given Adams's past in Whiskeytown, explains why ...

| | Ventures In The Vaults Vol. 3 CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Cold Roses CD music
$19.15 Although the Ventures' popularity in the U.S. peaked in the early to mid-'60s, they've remained extremely popular overseas, particularly in Japan, and it's been enough to keep this versatile instrumental group going after 40-plus years. This is the third in a series of vault releases from the band, and it won't surprise anyone, although the variety of genres -- including country, psychedelic rock, funk, disco, reggae, and Latin -- that the combo rolls into its instrumental guitar palette is pretty impressive. Among the highlights here are single (as opposed to album) mixes of vintage surf tunes like "The Ninth Wave" and the classic "Kickstand," indescribable rambles like "The Chase" (which sounds like nothing so much as an interstellar polka masquerading as a drag race), the heavily ...

$8.79 This is an Enhanced audio CD which contains regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
The Doobies' first studio album of the new millennium--and their first in almost a decade--finds the veteran California hitmakers in fine form. With founding members Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons on hand, things are obviously covered in the vocal harmony department, and the rhythm section--featuring longtime drummers Michael Hossack and Keith Knudsen--sounds loaded for bear as well.
Musically, save for the occasional hip-hop rhythm ("Jericho") what's here isn't all that different from their '70s (pre-Michael McDonald) heyday; Simmons' "Leave My Heartache ...
