Purchase One CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Miles Davis On The Corner CD (1972) Remastered
One album
$9.75 ON THE CORNER enjoys a special cult status among musicians, anticipating as it does the punk funk/acid jazz movements. For Miles Davis, ON THE CORNER was another seismic shift. Miles was particularly fond of the lyric sweep of Hendrixian electric guitar, the James Brown-like rhythmic thump of Fender bass, and the bell-like timbre and chordal possibilities of the Fender/Rhodes electric piano. Now the trumpeter sought to incorporate the feel of street rhythms from around the world and to reflect the influence of modern electronic composers such as Karlheinz Stockhausen.
So while ON THE CORNER is generously populated with top-flight jazz players, Davis was zeroing in on a contemporary approach not beholden to jazz players of jazz rhythmic postures--although group improvisation is still very much the order of the day. In paving the way for his Afro-psychedelic working bands of the mid-70's, Davis was roundly dissed, but ON THE CORNER endures brilliantly--the dark lady of Miles' musical sonnets.
The album is a furious carnival of rhythm. The first section is dominated by an Afro-Cuban groove, the eerie distortion of Miles' wah-wah trumpet, John McLaughlin's nasty electric leads and a swelter of rhythms--every instrument seemingly transformed into a drum. The second section beginning with "Black Satin" is driven along by a commanding Michael Henderson bass line, a celestial drone of Indian bells, sitars, tablas, congas and handclaps, some skanky Herbie Hancock keyboards, and a skittering Davis solo.

Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover audience of forward-looking jazz devotees and progressive rock fans.
The music on THE INNER MOUNTING FLAME is incendiary and highly improvisational. Well-conceived unison melodic passages structure each tune, and McLaughlin and company play like the virtuosos they are throughout. "The Noonward Race" features a bluesy, yet harmonically dissonant solo from McLaughlin, and the frenetic drumming of Billy Cobham. In contrast, in "A Lotus on Irish Streams," McLaughlin soars passionately on an acoustic guitar, while violinist Jerry Goodman adds a simple, folky melody.
Includes liner notes by Sri Chinmoy and Bob Belden.

| | Eric Clapton Crossroads 2: Live In The Seventies CDs (1996)
One music CDs
$43.19 Recorded in the U.S. and the U.K. between May 1974 and December 28, 1978. Includes liner notes by John McDermott
Chock-full of blistering live performances drawn exclusively from the Tulsa-based band Clapton used during the "me" decade, CROSSROADS 2 is the antidote to his mostly laid-back, sleepy studio performances of the era.
With nearly 5 hours of music spread over 4 discs, CROSSROADS 2 never becomes redundant or too much of a good thing--a true testament to the power and fury of Clapton's excellent songs and fiery verve. Smoky vocals and truly inspired guitar workouts serve both his well-known hits and the sometimes obscure blues-songs he chooses. A 24-minute medley duet with Carlos Santana from '75 burns with passion and excitement. The album is bookended with 4 studio outtakes, with 1974's "Walkin' Down The Road" and "Cryin"--recorded four years later with the nucleus of Slowhand's next band--reflecting a more contemplative mood. A terrific set that entertains, surprises and delights, and an essential item that any Clapton connoiseur will treasure.
CROSSROADS 2 is a 4-CD box set consisting mostly of Eric Clapton's unreleased live performances from 1974, 1975 and 1978, but is bookended by four previously unreleased studio tracks: "Walking Down The Road" (recorded in 1974), "To Make Somebody Happy," "Cryin'" and "Water On The Ground" (recorded in 1978). The set includes a 44-page color booklet with essays, complete credits and rare photographs.
Producers: Tom Dowd, Glyn Johns, Jon Astley.
Compilation producer: Bill Levenson.
Engineers include: Karl Richardson, Ed Barton, Bill Brovas.
Personnel includes: Eric Clapton (vocals, guitar); George Terry, Graham Lyle, Carlos Santana (guitar); Marcy Levy (harmonica, background vocals); Dick Sims (keyboards); Carl Radle, Dave Markee (bass); Jamie Oldaker, Henry Spinetti (drums); Armando Peraza, Sergio Pastora, Leon Chancler (percussion); Yvonne Elliman (background vocals).
| | Miles Davis Live At Fillmore East (March 7, 1970): It's About That Time CDs (2001)
One songs
$21.25 Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder & Seth Foster (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
The creative vision of Miles Davis was at its most mercurial in the late '60s and early '70s. He advanced the language of jazz (and pop) not just with each album, but practically with each gig. A perfect case in point is this live two-disc set. LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST is like manna from heaven for Miles fans, its nine cuts all previously unreleased performances from a formation of Miles's band that didn't stabilize long enough for a studio release. A considerably different version of this band had recorded the groundbreaking BITCHES BREW not much more than six months before this Fillmore appearance, but the record released as AT THE FILLMORE in 1971, featured yet another incarnation, sans Wayne Shorter, whose last gig with Miles is captured here.
Accordingly, this release finds Davis and cohorts in transition between the abstract jazz-rock of BITCHES BREW and the funkified, modal jams of subsequent recordings. The two sets documented here draw largely from BITCHES BREW, but the variations just a few months down the line are startling. Chick Corea's ring-modulated electric piano creates a Stockhausen-like maelstrom of sound, while Shorter plays some of the most daring, freewheeling solos of his career. Dave Holland splits the difference between funk, rock, and jazz, joining with Jack DeJohnette's roiling drums to forge a tumbling sonic carnival ride. The entire band blazes through every tune working on all cylinders, making a monstrously joyful noise by which the rest of us are still edified, even decades after the fact.
All tracks have been previously unreleased.

True to the album's title, the live concert on the CD features just Taylor's warm, mellow voice and his soulful, folk-influenced acoustic guitar. Recorded live in front of a hometown crowd in the hills of western Massachusetts, these 19 songs stretch back over 40 years, all the way to his first single, "Something in the Way She Moves," and include fine renditions of all his most beloved songs as well as several wry anecdotes about them. ONE MAN BAND is an intimate portrait nicely executed.
