Fleming proves that she is all-around singer
Renee Fleming's "Haunted Heart" is not just another "crossover" album. While numerous operatic singers have recorded jazz-flavored albums (often with disastrous results), Ms. Fleming proudly displays her roots as a jazz vocalist (during her student years, the late bandleader and saxophonist Illinois
Jacquet was so impressed with her vocal prowess that he wanted to hire her to sing with his big band) in a smoky alto
register which will astonish those fans who know her only as an operatic soprano. She also could not have chosen two more sympathetic accompanists than contemporary jazzmen
Fred Hersch (piano) and Bill Frisell (guitar). Therefore, I rate Ms. Fleming's "Haunted Heart" as one of the outstanding releases of 2005.
