Although soprano Renée Fleming is renowned for her classical work, on 2005's HAUNTED HEART, the opera diva surprises listeners with an artistic curveball. Here Fleming not only takes on the songs of pop icons (Joni Mitchell, Stevie Wonder, the Beatles), she also sings in a distinctively different voice, employing a deep tone and soul-inspired phrasing. As always, her talent shines through, but on this record, it is often cast in another light. Fleming's sole accompanists are pianist Fred Hersch and guitarist Bill Frisell, two remarkably intuitive artists who perfectly complement Fleming's expressive singing with spare yet atmospheric backing, whether playing with her separately or together. Fans of all three acclaimed performers will undoubtedly be pleased and intrigued by HAUNTED HEART, an album that combines pop and classical traditions to stunning effect.

JazzTimes (p.78) - "The results are as stylistically diverse as they are uniformly gorgeous."
Submitted by lsaudain (Paris, France) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Fleming proves that she is all-around singer Renee Fleming's "Haunted Heart" is not just another "crossover" album. While numerous operatic singers have recorded jazz-flavored albums (often with disastrous results), Ms. Fleming proudly displays her roots as a jazz vocalist (during her student years, the late bandleader and saxophonist Illinois
Jacquet was so impressed with her vocal prowess that he wanted to hire her to sing with his big band) in a smoky alto
register which will astonish those fans who know her only as an operatic soprano. She also could not have chosen two more sympathetic accompanists than contemporary jazzmen
Fred Hersch (piano) and Bill Frisell (guitar). Therefore, I rate Ms. Fleming's "Haunted Heart" as one of the outstanding releases of 2005.

Haunted Heart songs
$10.29 With the release of Robert Altman's M*A*S*H in 1970, a new form of comedy was born, one that would help to forever change the face of cinema. Altman's audacious film reflected the American counterculture's growing distrust of religion and government in the late 1960s and early 1970s, resulting in one of the biggest box office smashes of its time. Introducing the techniques he would employ throughout his storied career--overlapping dialogue, a constantly moving camera with a ...
| | Dizzy Gillespie Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 CD (2005)
Haunted Heart album
$13.79 The historic live Town Hall sessions by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker from 1945 have been discovered on an acetate pressing, and are transferred with digital enhancement to CD. Why this concert was not issued initially is understandable, but Ira Gitler's informative and insightful liner notes suggest they likely were misplaced. What Gitler's essential writing also reveals is that these dates were approximate by only weeks to the original studio recordings of these classics, and there was no small amount of controversy surrounding this revolutionary bebop. Clearly bop was a vehicle for intricate melodic invention followed by lengthy soloing, aspects of which Parker with Gillespie were perfectly suited for. Fact is, the situation surrounding the sonic capture and extended neglected shelf life of this performance was far from optimal. Symphony Sid Torin is the M.C., rambling as always, making repeated references to Dizzy "Jillespie" and misidentifying Max Roach as Sid Catlett on "Salt Peanuts." (Catlett does sit in on "Hot House" in a more supportive ...
