Carousel Waltz album
$12.49 There are only five tracks on the album, but each song evolves through several movements, with delicate, ringing melodies plucked out on guitars--overlapping and eclipsing each other, while bass and drums create pulses that are both ambient and insistent. The tone throughout is deeply meditative, and often melancholic. But the intelligence and meticulous craft behind the Explosions' instrumental interplay is enough to keep even the most jaded indie rock ears attuned. Though THE EARTH is moody, subtle, and deliberately paced, it is also a deeply absorbing listen, and promises even greater things to come from this inventive band.
Explosions in the Sky is set to make a noticeable mark on the indie rock scene. It combines epic guitar architecture a la Sonic Youth, the spatial manipulation of slowcore bands like Low, and the instrumental rock ambition of upstarts like Mogwai. While the band's 2001 debut trafficked in whiplash stylistic ...
| | Low Great Destroyer CD (2005)
Carousel Waltz CD music
$11.59 Low's seventh full-length album, THE GREAT DESTROYER, marks a literal departure for the Duluth, Minnesota trio, with the band leaving its longtime label, Kranky, in favor of uber-indie taste-makers, Sub Pop. The overall sound of the record reflects the transition, as Low hits new heights in both volume and aggression, particularly on the fuzzed-out "Monkey" and the swelling "Everybody's Song." During "On the Edge Of" and "When I Go Deaf," guitarist Alan Sparhawk unleashes gloriously distorted Neil Young-worthy leads, while "Broadway (So Many People)" balances amped-up rock with the group's trademark hushed melodies.
Those looking for Low's renowned hypnotic "slowcore" sound will find it carefully mixed into different forms, with only "Silver Rider" clearly recalling the band's formative mid-1990s era. Like past Low releases, THE GREAT DESTROYER still uses Sparhawk's gorgeous ...
| | Explosions In The Sky How Strange, Innocence CD (2000)
Carousel Waltz music CDs
$12.59 Though released in 2005, HOW STRANGE, INNOCENCE was actually recorded before Explosions in the Sky's 2001 debut, THOSE WHO TELL THE TRUTH SHALL DIE, THOSE WHO TELL THE TRUTH SHALL LIVE FOREVER. Consequently, HOW STRANGE bears some of the hallmarks of a band finding its footing--the compositions are not quite as complex and refined as they would become on later releases. Still this snapshot of early EITS ...
| | Loose Fur Born Again In The U.S.A. CD (2006)
Carousel Waltz songs
$12.69 The eponymous first album from Loose Fur, the Wilco side project that includes Jeff Tweedy, Glenn Kotche, and uber-producer/art-rocker Jim O'Rourke, was seen by many as a safe house for further indulging the sonic experiments found on Wilco's YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT. This time out, the band switches from arty side-project to ragged super-group, and cuts loose to play some rock & roll.
As the album's title suggests, there's a satirical, irreligious tendency at work here, but the focus is on crunchy riffs and tight, well-crafted songs that run the gamut from lilting ...
| | Liars Drum's Not Dead CD (2006) With DVD
Carousel Waltz album
$12.85 A concept album based on fictional characters named Mt. Heart Attack and Drum, this mesmerizing record is the result of the art-rock ensemble Liars, formerly of Brooklyn, taking up residence in Berlin after the release of the critically divisive THEY WERE WRONG, SO WE DROWNED. Although DRUM'S NOT DEAD does rely heavily on pummeling percussion and chanted vocals, the undoubtedly challenging outing is quite nuanced and dynamic, with many of the Mt. Heart Attack tracks (particularly "Let's Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack") conveying a compulsive energy, and the Drum-related compositions (see the droning "Hold You, Drum") conjuring up a meditative dreaminess. The CD is accompanied by a DVD that presents three short films (two of which are directed by band members), each one following the arc of this fascinatingly strange excursion.
This set was partly inspired by the band's reloca tion to Berlin from NYC after their 2004 album, They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. The album comes with its own cinematic sister DVD with 3 film versions of the album, directed by band member Angus Andrew, ...
