The Robot Ate Me: Dave Greenberg, Ryland Bouchard, R.J. Hoffman. Additional personnel: Carolyn Tyler (cello); Alan Lechusza (woodwinds); J.P. Reed (trumpet); Marques Lyons (trombone); Jay Hoffman, Jacob Baird (bass guitar); Christina Sanchez (background vocals). Folky balladeers Robot Ate Me impress from the start on Carousel Waltz on Olympia's 5RC Records. "Bad Feelings" immediately draws listeners in with steady and catchy instrumentation along with Ryland Bouchard's inventive lyrics and take-charge vocals, which are quickly reminiscent of Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips. The simplified instrumentation is a stripped-down version of Robot Ate Me's vision, compared to their more experimental previous works. Acoustic guitar and elegant horns are pervasive throughout. The album's tones alternate from the hopeful to the regret-laden, highlighted by Bouchard's quirky turns of phrase and vocal style. Standouts include the optimistically rousing "All Good Things"; the changing momentum of "Tonight"; and the steady, somber tones of "Just One Girl." Bouchard's strength as a lyricist is evident throughout. The disc ends with the moody "Come Together" and mesmerizing "Hi Love," on which his vocals are easily comparable to Eric Metronome. Carousel Waltz is an impressive next step in the progression of Robot Ate Me. ~ Stephen Cramer Robot Ate Me Carousel Waltz Songs Carousel Waltz Music Review Purchase Carousel Waltz CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Echo & The Bunnymen The Fountain CD (2009)

Carousel Waltz
$10.15 Jeff Smith and "The Human Wilderness" In a world increasingly defined by web sites and sound bites, it becomes more difficult to access those lost and disappearing corners of America. It is from such hidden and obscure places that Washington, D.C. based artist/writer Jeff Smith emerges with the release of his debut CD entitled "The Human Wilderness" on Acetate Records. With this twelve song, self-penned collection, Jeff explores the dark, light and the in between of the small town America. With this initial offering, Jeff Smith takes a his place alongside the like of Lyle Lovett, John Prine and Iris Dement as an interpreter of that vanishing America beyond the franchised glitter of another Planet Hollywood or the digital slickness of yet another mass market advertising campaign. Think of a John Sayles movie or a Richard Ford shortstory and you will most likely have identified the essence of a Jeff Smith song. Jeff’s music is a reflection of his roots and background . His songs are bounded at one extreme by memories of growing up in a small Ohio River town of West Virginia. On the other is the hip and diverse Washington D.C. music scene which has spawned the likes of Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nils Lofgren, and The Seldom Scene. It all adds up to asinger/songwriter with plenty to say and a distinctive and unforgettable way of saying it. The songs of The Human Wilderness conjure up images of coal barges ...
