| | Jackson Browne Running On Empty CD Jackson Browne Discography of CDs
(5 Customer Reviews)
Also available with JACKSON BROWNE (SATURATE BEFORE USING) on 1 cassette.
An audacious concept album about life on the road, this is a mix of in concert performances and informal sessions taped in various hotel rooms (see "Shaky Town," although it's hard to believe that Browne, by then a major star, was actually staying at a Holiday Inn). It's very '70s--the overall aura of cocaine-fueled decadence is almost palpable--but it works far better than you'd expect, and the songs are consistently memorable, even if Browne didn't write them all.
High points include a stunning half hotel/half concert version of Danny O'Keefe's "The Road," still the best song ever written about the life of a travelling musician, and the closing medley of the roadie anthem "The Load-Out" and Maurice Williams and the Zodiac's doo-wop classic "Stay." The hard rocking title tune features typically lyrical yet stinging slide guitar from long time associate David Lindley.
Recorded live in 1977.

Liner Note Authors: Anthony DeCurtis; Cameron Crowe.Uncut (p.88) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "At the center, in splendid isolation from the surrounding cast of characters, are Browne's boyishly earnest voice and its constant shadow throughout the decade: the keening lap-steel and doleful violin of David Lindley." Dirty Linen (p.63) - "Writing rock songs about life on the road has long been a cliche, but the topic was never treated with such verve and condor as it was on Jackson Browne's 1977 album RUNNING ON EMPTY..." | Running On Empty Music Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Great Music, Defective Disc I ordered "Running on Empty" for the DVD-A disk. The re-mastered original CD is quite good and sounds excellent.
I have returned this package twice, however, due to defects in the DVD-A disk. This is more to due with what they received from Rhino Records than CDUniverse, but it is something to be noted if you intend to by it. Submitted by starrdan (N. Rose, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Fantastic Disc - Not Defective! I can't say enough about this wonderful release. Probs that some people are encountering are due to firmware issues in their dvd player - specifically the Pioneer DV-563a. If you have this player and haven't gotten the firmware update, this will not be the only disc you will have probs with. Get it fixed (a free warranty service - search Google for info), and enjoy!! Worth the Wait...Almost This is Jackson Browne at his best! The extra 2 songs are welcome as they help to recall an earlier era of 8-tracks and CB radios.
The DVD-A mix is excellent, especially with the live cuts. The listener is 9th row center instead of in the middle of the band.
My disc is defective in that I cannot use any of the menu without it locking up. Submitted by Dan (North Rose, NY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
There Will Be No Wine Before Its Time Hello Surround Friends!, If you were like me and waited what seemed like aeons for this title to come to fruition, I hope you agree that it was worth the wait. Vast improvement in the dynamics from the original, and a very welcome discrete surround mix. This disc should be played in its entirety to appreciate the Mr. Browne's motivation for this project. Buy now and enjoy! Thank you. Submitted by patrick_roseberry (Glen Ellyn, Illinois) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Running On Empty
$26.38 2009 four CD set, the ultimate edition of the British Alt-Rock band's 1985 masterpiece. For nearly 25 years, Love has been a consistent seller, endorsing it's classic status in The Cult's repertoire. Designed to cater to the more committed fan, the Omnibus Edition is presented as a limited edition four disc box set with the CD's housed in Japanese-style paper sleeves, reproducing the original vinyl cover art. Apart from the re-mastered original album the box also includes the singles, the demos and a live recording from 1985. Equal parts Psychedelic Hard Rock and New Wave Goth, the songs on Love emanate a bright guitar sheen, tight arrangements, crisp drumming and a command performance from vocalist Ian Astbury. Along with the liner notes, the 48 page book features unseen contact sheets from the album photo session and a chronology of contemporaneous quotes by Ian Astbury and Billy Duffy that illuminate the status of the band at that ...
| | Kings Of Convenience Declaration Of Dependence CD (2009)
Running On Empty
$12.30 In the five years since their last record, the duo of Erlend Oye and Erik Glambek Boe have each been busy, Oye with DJ gigs and his other band the Whitest Boy Alive, and Boe with his day job and fighting Clear Channel in their hometown of Bergen, Norway. Getting back into Kings of Convenience mode sounds like it was as easy as putting on a fresh pair of socks. Their third album, DECLARATION OF DEPENDENCE, sounds like it could have been recorded at the same session as RIOT ON AN EMPTY STREET; it's just as relaxed, mellow, and dreamy. The pair's voices blend like honey and more honey, each of them possessing vocal chords made of cotton candy. They twine their voices around complex but warmer-than-a-Snuggie harmonies on every song; the comparisons to Simon & Garfunkel still hold up, though by now they really sound most like themselves, and not imitators. This album is sparser than the last; there are no guest vocals and very infrequent extra instruments (strings, piano). It gives the proceedings a very intimate sound, between this, the duo's hushed voices, and the peaceful songs, it's even quieter and more subdued than anything they've done so far. The mood of introspective reflection ...
