On 2003's Berlinette, Ellen Allien reveled in the stops and starts, in pinching her already-precision percussion stabs into tetchy bunches of sharp black commas and apostrophes. It made for music that was futuristic, excitingly tense, and, well, totally German. Allien's back after an EP and a remix album with the sleeker but no less fun Thrills. It's more concise than Berlinette, beginning with the insistent layering and chopped reverb guitar of "Come," a track that's Berlin's ultimate answer to Achtung Baby if there ever was one. And it continues. The churning "Your Body Is My Body," "Ghost Train"'s gentle clockwise cascade, and "Naked Rain"'s brittle, almost synth pop feel -- these are songs that move feet and stroke chins. Allien is a world-class DJ, so the dancing part is no surprise. But blending those consistent beats with synthetic detachment and left-field moments? Thrills puts "experimental" and "techno" on balance. ~ Johnny LoftusUncut (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 - "THRILLS finds BPitch boss and jet-set electro DJ Ellen Allien cool and composed at the controls, steering an earthy analogue funk through her sassiest collection yet." Purchase Thrills CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Paul Butterfield Blues Band CD (1965)
Thrills album
$6.19 The '60s Blues Revival begins here. Calling this album influential is an understatement akin to calling the Grand Canyon a rut; suffice to say that an entire generation of musicians (mostly young and white) heard this and had their lives changed forever. In fact, for at least a year after the album's release in 1965, it was impossible to walk down the hall of any college dorm in America without hearing one of the songs here echoing from somebody's room.
Heard today, the thing still packs a wallop. Butterfield's harmonica and vocals are utterly idiomatic, without a hint of minstrelsy. Michael Bloomfield's lead guitar is stinging and eloquent, ...
| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Thrills CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Thrills music CDs
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock fans lamenting the modern era's relative lack of story-driven albums divided into "Act I" and "Act II" will latch onto SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA with the same passion with which they embraced THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY. And most importantly, unreconstructed Southern rockers of the boogie-and-beer variety will appreciate the fact that this is an unapologetic, non-ironic valentine to the sound of not only Skynyrd, but the Allman Brothers, ...
| | CocoRosie La Maison De Mon Reve CD (2004)
Thrills songs
$12.25 An enchanting debut, CocoRosie's La Maison de Mon Rêve is a dreamy yet challenging confection of found sounds, folk-blues, trip-hop, girlish pop, and experimental recording and production techniques. The Casady sisters' breathy, slightly different, but equally lovely vocals circle each other atop delicately plucked and strummed acoustic guitars, chirping birds, and fractured beats, making for a sound that is hard to define outside of its own beauty and creativity. A strong Billie Holiday influence colors the sisters' vocals, particularly on La Maison de Mon Rêve's most accessible songs, but even then, CocoRosie isn't so much aping Lady Day as it is invoking her style in unique ways. Layers of crickets, birds, pianos, and intensely sweet backing vocals make "By Your Side" an unusually intimate and spontaneous-sounding, while lyrics like "I'd wear your black eyes/Bake you apple pies" give it a subversive, feminist angle. "Butterscotch" mixes ethereal sensuality with a mischievous sense of humor, and "Good Friday"'s whispered remembrances make it the most romantic moment on La Maison de Mon Rêve, which -- as if it needed any more romance -- was recorded in Paris in the springtime. The unusual found sound samples and percussion that pepper the album give it a uniquely immediate, you-are-there feel that is especially evocative on its more impressionistic tracks like "Candyland" and "Not for ...
| | Antony I Am A Bird Now CD (2005)
Thrills album
$12.49 Though he probably achieved his greatest mainstream recognition backing up Lou Reed on tour, idiosyncratic songbird Antony is a fully established artiste in his own right. Backed by the Johnsons, as on I AM A BIRD NOW, he crafts delicate ballads that skirt the lines between cabaret, artsong, and pop, with the kind of voice that Stephin Merritt would probably kill for. Antony's unique pipes bring to mind an androgynous Bryan Ferry or a high, quavery summit meeting between Jimmy Scott (another Reed supporter) and Aaron Neville. The stately, graceful, largely piano-driven songs on I AM A BIRD NOW are full of honest, uncluttered emotion, but never go over the top. The communication is direct and immediate, as wisps of melancholy settle around the listener. Guest shots by kindred spirits Rufus Wainwright, Devendra Banhart, and Reed himself vary the tone a bit, but the fragile beauty of this album ...
