It took eight years, but the trilogy that started with 1997's ACCIDENT OF BIRTH and continued with 1998's THE CHEMICAL WEDDING is finally complete with the release of 2005's TYRANNY OF SOULS. Dickinson once again collaborates with guitarist ... Full Descriptionand producer Roy Z, with whom he has an almost telepathic relationship. That comes in handy when writing an album together while thousands of miles apart, Z at home in Los Angeles and Dickinson on tour with Iron Maiden. Working only with a tape of Z's guitar parts, Dickinson composed lyrics based on some of his favorite subjects: science fiction ("Soul Intruders"), space ("River of No Return"), and flying ("Kill Devil Hill").
TYRANNY OF SOULS is full of Z's signature layered guitars, as heavy as they are melodic and intricate. "Abduction" and "Soul Intruders" open with retro thrash riffs and feature blindingly fast solos. No Dickinson album would be complete without a history lesson, included here in "Kill Devil Hill," the story of the Wright Brothers' first flight. At the midpoint of the record, "Navigate the Seas of the Sun" revisits the subtle acoustic vibe of 1994's "Tears of the Dragon," the song that originally brought Z and Dickinson together.
Personnel: Bruce Dickinson (vocals); Roy Z (guitar, bass instrument); Mistheria (keyboards); Juan Perez, Ray Burke (bass guitar); David Moreno (drums).
Recording information: Castle Oaks, Calabasas, California; Los Angeles, California; San Diego, California (2005).
Hide Description Bruce Dickinson Tyranny Of Souls Songs Tyranny Of Souls Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews LOUSY sound quality I am afraid that I just do not understand all of the great reviews for this. It's almost as if Bruce merely needs to lend his name to an album and people BLINDLY give it the thumbs up. The songs on this are actually good to great BUT like other recent production jobs by Roy Z (Priest, Halford, and now Dickinson), the sound quality is thin, mid-rangy and POWERLESS. In fact, the sound quality becomes annoying after awhile. It's a shame to because it contains many strong songs that would have really rocked had it not been for such a sub-standard production job. Shame on Bruce whom I like & respect as an artist for allowing such a weak sound quality to infect his good work. For the money, I feel ripped off & expected more. Roy can write the riffs, he just can't properly record them...and back to the mixing board we go! Submitted by The Trooper (Marysville, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
Tyranny of Expectations I kinda expected more from Bruce, but then again I don't have a schedule like his. The songs lacked the sinister feel that the cover portrays and the devilish darkness of the song 'Infinite Dreams' by Iron Maiden although the album in its entirety is better than Maiden's recent uninspired ones. Awesome This is one of the best Cd's I've heard in a while. Although I would have liked it to be a little heavier, I still like every song with Power of the Sun being my favorite. Any Maiden fan will ike this disc. Submitted by Garion (LV NV) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Two geniuses reunion It dont surprise me if it comes from these two geniuses who did surprise me in accident of birth some years ago, but maintained their exceptional level of compositions. This album is a very good done work musically, lyrically, with excellent rythms and melodies as well. Roy Z has inspired a low profile lighted mind in the history of rock for these late years period. And Bruce.. nothing to say, we know who he is. Thanks guys you make my soul feel so excited with these tyrant tunes!! Submitted by Jorge Bugueno Z. (Chile, south america) Was This Review Helpful? Tyranny Of Souls Bruce Dickinson's best solo effort yet. This is a must for Dickinson and Iron Maiden fans alike. Good metal beats in 'Abduction' and 'Soul Invaders'. A little mellower sound in 'Navigate The Seas of The Sun'. The title track also is great. With Iron Maiden undertones throughout, this still says Bruce Dickinson all the way! $10.15 I love hearing veteran artists do what they do best. Here is a guy who has paid more than his share of the proverbial "dues" and he's still jumpin'. You want variety? O.K. you got it. With this album "Ladmosis" you hear a broad spectrum of the influences that motivate Mark Miller. As a producer, I also like artists who are professional and sound like it. You got that too! So what's holding YOU back? Check out Mark "Ladmo" Miller and for heaven's sake buy something will ya?TJ Murr, producerRoadShow Recordswww.roadshorecords.comMark "Ladmo" Miller's Blurbs About me:New to the Tulsa area i am looking to get into the music scene in the area. I have been jamming with Mike Barham at some local venues. If you haven't seen them they are great, check 'em out. I am currently affiliated with three bands right now, Infusion of Ages, Just in Case and Astrolith. They are Rock, Dance and Progressive respectively. We will be out and about starting Aug 3rd. Come out and support live music. I grew up all over the U.S. I lived with my Grandparents and we traveled a lot. I started learning guitar at age 9 and began playing in church at 10 1/2. I played in churches all over the Mississippi Delta, Kentucky and Arkansas as well as Oregon where I was born. At 12 I discovered Rock and Blues and went full on into the music. Kiss and Muddy Waters were my favorites. Well, I was a kid I won't apologize for liking Muddy though. Ace Freheley was a God to me and the biggest influence in my style. I joined the Marine Corps in 1984 and spent a lot more time traveling. Heard some intersting sounds and met some very nice people. As my enlistment began to wind down I started a band ( Both Barrels ) and could be found from L.A. to Tijuana, Mexico playing music. I moved to Indy in 1993 and had a few gigs here and there with some successful acts( check my bio on the Official Mystic site ) and ended up signing with Lonewolf Media Entertainment LLC. I was in The Fabulous Huckleberries at that time and I really miss that band. A couple of us have moved on and formed some new projects so look for us, we're still here! I had the pleasure of meeting and befriending Tim Spainhower a kick ass singer/songwriter/guitarist/bass playing/how much time do we have?/drummer/keyboardist/Oww! Cramping!/I'm done, sorry Tim, and we have started an acoustic act that will blow up into a Full on ROCK band when the spirit hits us! Tim is a great guy and very, very talented. He is in my top friends as Buster, check him out. I also met Johnny Lyles who brought me to The Fab Huck and we have become fast friends and business partners. ...
