The smoky, sizzlingly soulful rural Georgian created an immediate and well-deserved critical firestorm with her 2003 debut Salt; the L.A. Times wasn't overstating it when they said, "She walked onstage at the Hollywood Bowl a virtual unknown...Fifteen minutes later, she walked off a star." Like her more (so far, but maybe not for long) renowned labelmate Diana Krall, Lizz Wright is a brilliant interpreter who can cover rock classics (Neil Young's "Old Man," the Youngbloods' "Get Together") as if they were fresh new generational statements, and even give an emotional urgency to fluffy classics like "A Taste of Honey" (done all swampy here). She even works wonders with her transcendent twist on Ella Jenkins' "Wake Up Little Sparrow," turning the tune into a meditation on the bluesy realities of love. But she is also an inspired songwriter in her own "wright," creating the resonating and heartrending, Norah Jones-like "Hit the Ground," with Jones' writer Jesse Harris, and other instantly seductive tracks like a soaring "Trouble" (the first song she ever wrote on guitar) and hauntingly dark title tune. These latter two, easily on par with the original material, shouldn't be so deep in the mix, and Wright should definitely include more originals as time goes on. Clearly aware that he has a future legend with a one in a million voice on his hands -- and that anything getting in the way of that intimate emotional connection would be criminal -- producer Craig Street provides only the sparsest and down-home of productions. ~Jonathan Widran

Down Beat (p.69) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A] deeply soulful, naturally laidback affair...sweet tempered without forsaking a point of view." JazzTimes (p.108) - "Wright's soul-jazz lilt - soft as peach fuzz yet iron-sturdy - is the musical equivalent of a protective hug from a keenly empathetic friend." Mojo (Publisher) (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 - "[T]he chanteuse has crafted a downbeat, folk-hued singer-songwriter album....Wright contributes some striking originals..." Lizz Wright brings a soft, sexy, and flirtatious quality to her music. This album is a huge improvement over her previous album, "Salt." While "Salt" was great stuff, this newest endeavour is sure to win fans and seduce those of us vulnerable to smooth vocals. Submitted by Isola (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? WOW! A different sound to the RnB sounds of 'salt', at first i heard this album and was disappointed but the more and more i heard it the more those songs haunted me, wether i hummed them or sung them outloud, this album touched me and i'm sure it touched whoever listens to it.
beautiful voice, beautiful music, just a simply beautiful album! Submitted by me2k3me (Manchester, NW, UK) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Incredible Ms. Lizz Wright, outdoes herself on this CD. I first listened to Salt about a year ago, and loved it. Saw Ms. Wright perform "On the Skinny" at "The Egg" in Albany, NY where she performed several of these songs from her new CD,dreaming wide awake. She has an incredible range, she is young, beautiful and refreshing. Anyone will be able to listen to this CD and take something away from it, some of these songs have been recorded in the past by such greats as the Beatles, and Ms. Wright' version is moving, you can feel her love of music and life. Now the former Stanley Jordan saxman and singer D'BREEON has stepped out again with the "FANTASY" Album, which delivers a double punch! This 2CD album sizzles with the hottest R&B on the 'Mysterious Lover CD'(1), and the coolest Club Jazz the 'Fantasy'CD(2). The 'Mysterious Lover' CD is a collection of urban stories about love, relationships and their complexities. The 'Fantasy' CD delivers soulful sax playing with the intellectual prowess of the Old-School masters combined with 21rst century urban grooves.Experience the phenomenon, and see why D'BREEON is in Who's Who 2005-2006.."....moves with the sexuality of Sade..." - EAR BUZZ"a collection of jazzy space-age soul" - Geoff Wilbur's RenegadeBio:The Chicago-born D'BREEON started playing the piano and saxophone when he was six years old under supervision of his mother, concert pianist Parrea Wilson. ...

$14.85 Maybe you know the COREsong "The Angle" from the videogame 'Smackdown vs. Raw', maybe you have already listened to some tunes on MTV's 'Meet The Barkers' or 'Viva La Bam', maybe you just dig our sound – anyway here we are finally on CDBaby! Well, we've been making music for ages. Chris and Sascha started writing and performing together at the age of 15, Harry joined them some three years later. And since then we've been making music for the sake of music. Because we love music - it's as simple as that. Undergoing different incarnations of the band and also experimenting stylistically throughout the years, we finally returned to our very first three-piece basis. Hence the name CORE.But there is also a second aspect to the name: Making music (or any form of creative output) always implies a quest of ...
