The Black Eyed Peas' fourth outing, MONKEY BUSINESS, picks up right where their platinum-selling breakout album, ELEPHUNK, left off, with the feel of a non-stop party run by an ultra-savvy DJ. "Pump It" opens the disc on a straight sample of Dick Dale's surf classic "Misirlou," as the three MCs of BEP float in and out--sometimes rapid-fire, sometimes measured--with Fergie stepping in on cue to alternately sing softly or with deep, soulful emotion.
The Peas' origins are tied to the DJ-driven world of breakdancing, and that flavor saturates MONKEY BUSINESS, as beats drop in and out, tracks blend into other tracks, and a lighthearted spirit of sophisticated ecstasy prevails. The aforementioned "Pump It" slides flawlessly into the lively single "Don't Phunk with My Heart," and the stage for the album is set. Icons James Brown and Sting drop by, on the uncompromisingly funky "They Don't Want Music" and the reggae-soaked "Union," respectively, but they're just guests on board for the ride (along with Justin Timberlake, John Legend, and others), part of the musical mural. The Black Eyed Peas turned from underground favorites to hit-making performers on ELEPHUNK; this follow-up continues that upward progression.

Uncut (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Will-I-Am's production is gliding yet hard, blasting off with 'Pulp Fiction' Dick Dale guitar, and giving contemporary bounce to '80s synth beats." | | Michael Shane Borden & the Dies Modern Sounds Of CD (2004)
Monkey Business
$16.45 Michael Shane Borden is no newcomer to country music. A veteran lead guitarist and singer with 25 years of honky-tonk playing under his belt, his second CD "The Modern Sounds of Michael Shane Borden and the Diesel Kings" is the culmination of a lot of miles, both literally and figuratively. His style pays homage to the legends of Honky-Tonk music while incorporating elements of rockabilly, roots rock, and hillbilly. Mostly self-penned, this CD includes many tongue-in-cheek songs like "Alcohol of Fame" (previously released) and "Heartbreak 101," some of which have already become favorites in the clubs.Platinum producer Mark Younger-Smith has managed to capture the essence of the band's "diesel-powered" sound. The CD comes out hammer-down with the first single "Truckstop Confessions" and only lets off the gas a time or two until putting on the airbrakes abruptly after the final track entitled "The Fifth." Acclaimed recording artist Dale Watson even makes a guest appearance on "Honky-Tonk Time Machine." In addition to the Diesel Kings, (Brendan Ryan on bass, Daren Hess on drums, and Tom Umberger on lead guitar), several of Austin's premier musicians such as Ricky Davis (steel), Billy Dee ...

$16.45 Progressive Pop for the 21st CenturyThey were a part of the Earth since the Earth was Earth, when it had less girth but was full of mirth. They were the product of an eruption of great force, sent from the depths of the Earth's core to appease those that inhabit its surface, and to conquer their arts. They create music of vastly diverse influence, an amalgam of serene beauty and jazzy tranquility delivered with propulsive energy and sonic creativity. Their music is as excruciatingly difficult to adequately describe as it is pleasurably satisfying to experience; they are a self-contained zeitgeist. They are Rane.Rane is a five-piece band, half lunatics and half maniacs. They are Alan (Fr. Noodles Devine), Bowman (World's Best Great-Grandma), Dan (The Euphoric One), Kurt (The Filthy Screwdriver), and Bruce (Random Letters, Numbers, and Symbols). They meld the sonic adventurousness of Radiohead, the eclecticism of Super Furry Animals, the erudite dynamics of Phish, the innovative approach to the pop song of mid-era XTC's, the sophistication of Steely Dan, the fearless structural complexity of Sonic Youth, the musicality of King Crimson, the atmospherics of Peter Gabriel, the percussion of Paul Simon, and the ambient tendencies of Berlin-era Bowie, all with an organic lyrical intensity.Rane were dispelled from Mount Coltrane, and equaled one half of its mass, hence their name. They evolved out of base elements, with only their moxie to guide them (God wasn't old enough to help yet). For years, they were "One of the Two or Three Greatest Microbe-Derived Bands in the World," a viciously contended title. In time, there developed a rival band: the Banalities, fronted by the evil and vacuous Inventif B. Repht. The Banalities were a noxious band clearly inferior to Rane, but innocuously appealing to many, and somehow eclipsed Rane's popularity many times over. The Banalities are the antithesis of Rane: they sound like every band before them, mindlessly regurgitating their influences without any recognizable singularity. Rane, disgusted by what Inventif B. Repht and his growing contingent of disciples represented, departed the known world, vowing to destroy Inventif from beyond his influence. They departed and were drawn North, secluding themselves to an island they dubbed Tides. It was here they would embody the spirit of independent music. From this island Rane write their own songs, record them in their own digital studio, and release them on their own record label. All the business ...
