| | Mccoy Tyner Dimensions CD Mccoy Tyner Discography of CDs
On this long out of print LP from the defunct Elektra Musician label, (reissued on CD by Collectables in 2005), pianist McCoy Tyner is featured in one of his strongest groups, a quintet with altoist Gary Bartz, violinist John Blake, bassist John Lee, and drummer Wilby Fletcher. A transitional set between Tyner's adventurous Milestone albums and his later repertoire (which falls in the tradition but still sounds quite original), this album has two standards ("Prelude to a Kiss" and "Just in Time"); Bartz's tribute to Thelonious Monk ("Uncle Bubba"); and one original apiece by Tyner, Blake, and Lee. Excellent music. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: McCoy Tyner (piano); Gary Bartz (saxophone, alto saxophone); Willy Fletcher (drums); John Blake (violin); John Lee , Wilby Fletcher.
Liner Note Author: McCoy Tyner.

| | Sonny Rollins Without A Song: The 9/11 Concert CD (2005)
Dimensions CD music
$9.75 Recorded on September 15th, 2001, WITHOUT A SONG is a live recording by jazz icon Sonny Rollins, observing the World Trade Center disaster that occurred just four days prior to the concert. Rollins was one of the few musicians from jazz's golden age still performing with a sense of vitality, and that is especially clear on this recording, which is imbued with the gravity appropriate to the aforementioned tragedy.
Yet the proceedings are never overwhelmed by pathos or grief. Instead, Rollins and his five-piece ensemble offer spirited takes on the standards "Where or When" and "A Nightingale ...

| | Miles Davis Cellar Door Sessions 1970 CDs (2005) Remastered; Box Set; Special Edition
Dimensions songs
$88.15 Contains previously unreleased material. Some of the recordings on the CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS were originally released in edited form on the 1971 double-LP LIVE EVIL.
There is an entire universe contained in this box. Sumptuously packaged and scrupulously annotated, CELLAR DOOR SESSIONS 1970 is a six-disc set that documents Miles Davis's extended residency at the Washington, D.C., club. Davis is backed by a group of genius musicians: keyboardist Keith Jarrett, drummer Jack DeJohnette, bassist Michael Henderson, saxophonist Gary Bartz, percussionist Airto Moreira and guitarist John McLaughlin (who appears only on the last two discs). Together they pioneered an ecstatic fusion of jazz, rock, funk, and abstract sound-painting that established the blueprint for the future of progressive music.
Each disc contains a different live set, and while songs are often repeated across the set lists, no two tracks sound the same. The players improvise at a fever-pitch, pushing themselves to endless invention, and the ensemble's interplay--expressionistic, protean, and fierce--is near telepathic. The influence of rock artists like Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix can ...
| | Stanley Turrentine That's Where It's At CD (1962) Bonus Track; Remastered
Dimensions album
$8.55 A Blue Note release with Les McCann on piano, Herbie Lewis on bass, and Otis Finch on drums. Small group format. Excellent (and exciting) soul-jazz session with Turrentine blowing hot. ~ Ron Wynn & Michael Erlewine
This 1962 session places tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine in the company of pianist Les McCann, bassist Herbie Lewis, and drummer Otis Finch. Of the six cuts on the original release, McCann, who was already in serious soul-jazz territory, wrote four. His meaty three- and four-chord figures are prominently placed and, as always, his sense of time and swing are everywhere. "Smile, Stacey" kicks it off in full blowing fare with Turrentine walking the line between soul-jazz and hard bop like a tightrope. His earthy tone is particularly muscular and quick here. His own blues ballad, "Soft Pedal Blues," follows, with Turrentine doing his best Ben Webster with slow, smoky breathy tones and McCann trilling across the top on the turnarounds. The slippery soul-blues of "Pia" is a shimmering little groover by McCann with him singing along with the lines in his solo. On his "We'll See Yaw'll After While, Ya Heah," his gospel chops come pouring out into the lyric until Turrentine moves it to bluestown with his solo and picks up the tempo and changes it to a quick waltz timing. The final two tracks on the CD are different takes of Tommy Turrentine's classic ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Dimensions CD music
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of ...
