Various Artists/Artificial Intelligence: Musicology, I. A. O.
The premier listening-techno label for the early '90s, Warp (distributed by TVT) released seminal albums by Polygon Window (aka Aphex Twin), Black Dog, B12, and Autechre. Great tracks from all these artists appear on Artificial Intelligence, along with contributions from Richie Hawtin, Speedy J, and the Orb's Dr. Alex Paterson. The B12 track "Telefone 529" (as Musicology), Black Dog's "Clan" (as I.A.O.) and Autechre's "Crystel" are three of the best here. The cover display, of a robotic humanoid relaxing in a futuristic living room with copies of Kraftwerk and Pink Floyd LPs on the floor, is quite appropriate: Warp virtually pioneered the concept of applying the concepts of '70s ambience to '80s techno. The result is a superb collection of electronic listening music, and it's a great place to start for the newly interested. ~ John Bush

Artificial Intelligence album
$13.09 The Organ's 2002 debut EP Sinking Hearts was more captivating than most of that year's full-length releases: over the course of just 15 minutes, the band crafted chiaroscuro meditations on falling in and out of love that were just as light and jangly as they were dark and brooding. The EP was a promising beginning, and Grab That Gun, the Organ's first album, builds on that promise by delivering more appealingly moody music instead of reinventing the band's sound. It's tempting, initially, to be slightly disappointed that the Organ didn't broaden its sonic territory. But, even though the music remains remarkably focused, Grab That Gun proves that the band has plenty of room for expression within its rather limited palette ...

HELLO, DOLLY! was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album.
David Merrick's star-studded presentation of Hello, Dolly! (1964) -- based on Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker -- was known as much for Gower Champion's brilliant direction and choreography as it was for Jerry Herman's equally effective lyrics and music. The cast includes the irrepressible Carol Channing as Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi, Charles Nelson Reilly as Cornelius Hackl, and a young Eileen Brennan in the role of Irene Molloy. The show originally opened on January 16th, 1964, and became the longest running Broadway musical of its' time. The Original Cast Recording also scored big, selling an unprecedented 80,000 copies the first week it was released. In 2003 terms, that would have given the record a Top Ten debut, which remains an unmatched feat for a Broadway soundtrack. The show earned an astonishing ten Tony Awards, and Herman also garnered a Grammy for Song Of The Year in 1964 -- beating out the Beatles' ("A Hard Day's Night") and Barbra Streisand's ("People"). The bonus tracks include "I Put My Hand In" and "So Long Dearie," by the Mary Martin-led London cast from 1965, as well as "Before the Parade Passes By" and the dynamic title track "Hello, Dolly!" featuring Pearl Bailey's 1967 Broadway reformation. An additional highlight is the ...

| | Tracy Nelson You'll Never Be A Stranger At My Door CD (2007)
Artificial Intelligence music CDs
$12.79 With You'll Never Be A Stranger At My Door, Tracy Nelson, after almost four decades, revisits the musical territory she first explored on Mother Earth Presents Tracy Nelson Country, That experience ensconced her, literally, in the Tennessee countryside and, figuratively, as the doyenne of the genre that, years later, would come to be known as Americana. She says that she recorded Tracy Nelson Country as "a whim" but that flight of fancy would go on to be an underground sensation. In the succeeding years as a solo artist, including her initial album for Memphis International Live From Cell Block D, her repertoire has been primarily blues-based. This time out, she says "I wanted to do something else, to do an album where the songs are the focus, pretty songs I could just sing."Earlier this year, after years of collecting and filing away those kinds of songs, she repaired to George Bradfute's Tone Chapparel Studio in Nashville with producer Mike Dysinger. She discovered that the studio, where artists ranging from Todd Snider and Joy Lynn White to Webb Wilder and Los Straightjackets have recorded, is situated in the basement of the house where country music giant Jim Reeves once lived. That determined that one of the songs for the album would be one associated with Reeves. So "Four Walls" found its way onto the tune stack.A cornerstone of the album is "Salt of the Earth" which Tracy, along with Guy Clark and Alice Newman Vestal wrote and it's a song that touches very close to home for Tracy. It tells the stories of three of Tracy's Dickson County farmer neighbors and was written from life. Alice is also a neighbor, a young woman whom Tracy has known since birth. "I very nearly delivered Alice." She's an accomplished singer/writer having contributed "Last Chance" to Tracy's highly regarded Ebony & Irony. The song's poignant narrative began as a poem that Tracy started almost fifteen years ago when one of the three characters in the song, Brown Hill, died. Guy Clark's sonorous recitation makes this one even more special. The version of "Cow Cow Boogie" on the album was inspired by ...
