A quick look at photo of Kelly Osbourne adorning the back cover of SLEEPING IN THE NOTHING will undoubtedly draw its share of double takes. The sneering, fuchsia-topped faux-punk look Osbourne was best known for is replaced by a sleeker, ... Full Descriptionmore sophisticated gun-metal-black bob complete with designer duds. Her music underwent an equally radical transformation. The aggressive pop-punk of her 2002 debut SHUT UP is displaced by Human League-like synth-driven dance music on SLEEPING. Credit producer Linda Perry, who pushed Osbourne to write about recent personal tribulations and hone her vocal phrasing. The strident vocal style endemic to the Osbourne's more aggressive prior output has been replaced by a smoother croon that brings to mind Berlin's Terri Nunn. As a result, songs touching on the singer's pre-rehab struggles ("Save Me") and familial strains ("One Word") are adorned by synth swooshes and echoey guitar tones that conjure up images of The Pet Shop Boys and the Psychedelic Furs. The only time Osbourne resorts to her prior singing style is on the understandably vituperative date-rape screed "Don't Touch Me While I'm Sleeping." SLEEPING IN THE NOTHING marks Kelly Osbourne's transition from punk-pop ingenue to dance-pop diva.

When Matchbox Twenty's first album became a hit, some critics lumped the band in with flash-in-the-pan rock acts of the day. What these early naysayers missed, of course, is that in vocalist Rob Thomas, Matchbox Twenty had one of the finest mainstream pop/rock songwriters in the business. Not only did Thomas rack up a string of hits with the Florida group, but he also co-penned "Smooth" from Santana's Grammy-winning 1999 comeback album, SUPERNATURAL.
With SOMETHING TO BE, his solo debut, Thomas pulls out all the stylistic stops, revealing that Matchbox Twenty's alternative-rock format provided a somewhat limited forum for his considerable talents. "Lonely No More" mixes an insistent dance beat with an insanely catchy chorus that sounds straight out of the boy-band textbook. The title track is a sly lyrical dig at poseurs of all stripes, backed by an 1980s electro-funk groove, while the burbling synths and Eastern percussion of "All That I Am" recall the world fusion experiments of Peter Gabriel and David Byrne. An ambitious effort by a guy who knows his way around a hit single, SOMETHING TO BE is the sound of an artist breaking out.
This release, produced by Matt Serletic, is the first solo album by the former lead singer of matchbox 20. 12 audio tracks are included bplus 20 minutes of behind-the-scenes footage, and bonus song.

| | Gwen Stefani Love, Angel, Music, Baby CD (2004)
Sleeping In The Nothing CD music
$10.85 Historically, it's a tricky endeavor for the singer from an enormously successful band to embark on a solo career. Gwen Stefani, the glamorous vocalist for No Doubt, sidesteps the issue on her first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, by largely eschewing the No Doubt sound. In its place, there's a strong emphasis on the R&B and hip-hop flavors that were hinted at in preceding No Doubt records. Towards that end, Stefani gamely enlists the assistance of Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and others, on an album that references everything from Japanese pop culture ("Harajuku Girls") to FIDDLER ON THE ROOF ("Rich Girl," featuring rapper Eve). Sensual R&B rhythms, frenetic hip-hop beats, and yes, the occasional ...

Sleeping In The Nothing music CDs
$11.89 There's a long history of American bands hitting it big in the UK before they become known at home, so the Brooklyn-bred, NME-feted Bravery is part of a hallowed tradition. While the Bravery is solidly in the mold of mid-2000s groups worshipping at the altar of the 1980s, they manage a canny syncretism on their self-titled debut album. While the Rapture, Out Hud, Interpol, and other NYC brethren may have picked up on specific aspects of the Cure, New Order, et al, the Bravery manages to craft an all-inclusive sound that incorporates the most infectious aspects of the aforementioned influences and more. Bleeping Depeche Mode synths, twanging New Order basslines, Robert Smith-inflected vocals, Duran Duran-tinged dance-rock beats, and effects-laden Echo & the Bunnymen-via-Smiths guitar riffs all vie for space here. The Bravery boys are clearly frothing with ...
| | Garbage Bleed Like Me CD (2005) Enhanced CD
Sleeping In The Nothing songs
$12.79 Garbage's mantra for BLEED LIKE ME could be "that which doesn't kill you only makes you stronger," given the emotional and creative upheaval this unit went through in the four years that elapsed between this disc and 2001's BEAUTIFUL GARBAGE. Following personal conflicts and health woes for both Butch Vig and Shirley Manson, the quartet stripped down its sound and amped up the guitars to create an angst-laced album reminiscent of the Breeders and Foo Fighters.
Apparently, bad circumstances make for great art, and this collection of songs is no exception. When Manson isn't purring lines like "Hey, baby can you bleed like me" over the moody synth washes of the title cut, she's striking a defiant pose over the Kim Deal-like bass lines of "Sex Is Not the Enemy." Elsewhere, the echoing guitars and rumbling bass of "Run Baby Run" bring to mind a delicious fusion of New Order and the Cure. Vig's longtime friend and associate Dave Grohl even puts in a memorable drumming appearance amid a wall of guitars on the roaring opening cut, "Bad Boyfriend." Energetic and cathartic, BLEED LIKE ME is a welcome return to form for Garbage.

| | Melissa Etheridge Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled CD (2005)
Sleeping In The Nothing album
$12.45 As one of the most prominent women in rock, Melissa Etheridge has blazed a striking path through the genre with her soulful, gritty voice and formidable guitar playing. In 1993, Etheridge took the bold step of coming out as a lesbian, and, in 2004, she showed even more tenacity by successfully battling breast cancer. This (mostly) chronologically ordered 17-track compilation presents highlights from Etheridge's remarkable career, and features five new tracks, including her fierce take on Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart."
Another excellent cover tune, a stirring 2005 rendition of Tom Petty's "Refugee," begins GREATEST HITS, which swiftly switches gears to Etheridge's early work, including the restless "Bring Me Some Water" and the road-trip narrative "You Can Sleep While I Drive." The disc also touches on the singer/songwriter's most successful singles (the rollicking "I'm the Only One" and the anthemic "Come to My Window"), before settling into Etheridge's triumphant post-cancer tracks, most notably the aforementioned Joplin song and the determined "I Run for Life." A concise overview of Etheridge's catalog with plenty of previously unreleased material, THE ROAD LESS TRAVELED is sure to please longtime fans, and it serves as an ideal introduction for those unfamiliar with the performer's potent brand of rock.

Sleeping In The Nothing Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Kelly Osbourne Rocks i love her album all the songs are fun to listen to it rocks. Submitted by av5000 (san jose, ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Coolest Album Ever! I have listened to this CD for about 8 hours a day, so I know it rocks. I mean if you're into the 80's electric pop type of music, then you have got to get this CD. And even if you're not, you should listen to the sound clips anyway. I never really liked the kind of music kelly made, but as soon as I heard "Sleeping in the Nothing", I had to go out and buy it! I now have two of her singles, the origional album, and an import all the way from England, or someplace like that. Submitted by Luis E. (Justin, TX) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Great CD by Daughter of Ozzy! This is Kelly's 2nd album and it is great. It has a very 80's Alterna/Pop Sound. The first single "One Word" was ignored by MTV & Radio. However, it was burning up in the clubs where it hit #1 on Billboard's Dance Chart. The cd is produced by Linda Perry (P!nk Fmae). Some of the stand out tracks are Red Light and Don't Touch Me While I'm Sleeping. This album deals with alot of issues facing todays youth. It also includes a dance remix of "One Word". If you haven't heard this cd, I would highly recomend it. Submitted by Paisley Parque (Greensboro, NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
