They're baaack! Nearly a decade-and-a-half has passed since we last heard from one of hair metal's leading bands, Europe, and the group has returned with Start from the Dark. While the group has earned a bit of a bad rap over the years (their keyboard-heavy tale of Armageddon, "The Final Countdown," was voted one of the 'Most Awesomely Bad Songs of All Time' on VH1), there's no denying that under all the pretty boy good looks and pop hooks, Europe was a talented band -- especially when compared to the other similar acts of the era. Europe's latest sees the group toughen up their sound a bit (especially when compared to their aforementioned Final Countdown era), as guitarist John Norum's heavy riffs serve as the main focal point, not keyboards, especially on such tracks as "Got to Have Faith" and the title track. In fact, even when the band takes the volume down a notch, as on "Reason," they wisely no longer try to heighten the 'syrup factor' with keyboards. Fans longing for Europe's return should enjoy Start From the Dark, even if their sound may be a bit heavier nowadays. ~ Greg Prato
Europe: Joey Tempest (vocals); John Norum (guitar); Mic Michaeli (keyboards); John Leven (bass guitar); Ian Haugland (drums).

Seeing that I really wanted to gave it a one and a half, I rounded the rating to the next highest number, and not down to the lower number (of stars). With that being said, I think this album pretty much sucks! There are not many albums out there that are so bad that it takes me two sessions to get through the whole thing, which was the case here. I have been a Europe fan since their S/T album, and can easily say that this sounds nothing like Europe. The bad thing is, is that this album doesn't sound like any of Europe's previous releases. The album doesn't even sound modern, someone should have told the boys from Sweden that grunge is no longer popular in the states (or anywhere else in the world). The music is very "grungey", and Joey Tempest sounds like he doing everything possible to try and sound like Layne Stanley or Eddie Vedder. The sound of the album is thin, and I don't hear the melodies that some of the reviewers have written about. If I had to compare this album to something, I would say that it sounds like Queensryche's 'Hear In The Now Frontier,' or Dokken's 'Shadow Life.' And we all now that these were the absolute low points for both bands. I am even wondering if 'Start From The Dark' is worst than the new Stryper album 'Reborn.' In one word, this album is "boring," and should be avoided at all costs. On a high note, the songs 'Start From The Dark' and 'My America' are quite good, but not enough to justify the price of this CD. Sadly Europe should have remained disbanded, as they didn't do anything but tarnish their name. I hope the payout was good boys, cause you just lost a fan. Good Comeback Great to see Europe come back with a harder style cd.Some fans won't like this cd because of not being commercial enuff like previous cds but as I see the Band have come full circle to the sound of the first few records with John Norum.Good to have them back. for those who say sort of none sense things Europe is a swedish band and the swedish bands never went bad. This album is one of the best. Is also a sign of the real mature trace that they made along this 10 years. The best, that´s for sure... Submitted by Ricardo Sousa (Europe, Portugal, Covilhã) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Start From The Dark songs
$11.69 Circus' only released album is something of a letdown. They attained considerable popularity on the bountiful Madison, WI, rock scene and then throughout the Midwest festival circuit due to their impressive live show and jamming capabilities. And the list of artists that they supported makes for a winning resume. But Circus is not nearly as interesting as albums by fellow scenesters SOUP or Tayles because the band was mostly unable to translate the excitement of their live shows into the recording studio. Instead of a talented improvisational band, it makes them sound more often like a pedestrian blues-rock or hard rock outfit. The band's signature claim to fame is their utilization of synthesizers, particularly the Moog and clavinet, and the instruments do add intriguing textures, but they are unable to conceal the rather plodding, drab songwriting. Their original tunes pale in comparison to even the second-rate tunes by the Allman Brothers Band and the Grateful Dead, two bands that seem to be touchstones for Circus. They simply are unable to muster many melodies that are particularly memorable, and when they do, as on "Fat Boogie Mama," it is borrowed almost entirely -- even down to the actual hook -- from Loggins & Messina's "Your Mama Can't Dance." The most interesting original may be "Travlin' Blues," which, contrary to the title, is solid country-rock with a nice banjo solo. It suggests that Circus may have benefited from leaning harder on that genre, at least in the recording studio. That notion is supported by their country-folk version of Ray Davies' "Skin and Bones," by far the best actual song on the album, with its exquisite acoustic slide guitar. The lack of a distinctive artistic impulse is all the more unfortunate because the five members are such outstanding players, even approaching the high skill level of their inspirations. The dual-guitar attack is hardly visionary, but it is thrilling, and Fred Omernik's keyboard work is superb. The lead vocals are nothing special, but the harmonies ...
| | Lightnin Hopkins Best Of Lightning Hopkins CD (2001)
Start From The Dark album
$13.75 Contains tracks from Lightnin' Hopkins' sessions with Gold Star in the 1940s and his later 60's Arhoolie sessions.
Recorded in Houston, Texas and Berkeley, California between 1947-1950 and 1961-1969. Includes liner notes by Chris Strachwitz.
While it's probably impossible to fully pin down a best-of from a man who constantly reinvented his own songs, it's only fitting that Arhoolie release this, since Lightnin' Hopkins (or Lightning Hopkins, as he's called here) was the inspiration for Chris Strachwitz to start his label. And while ten of the cuts are culled from ...
