| | Chris Young Man I Want To Be CD (2009)
African Guitar Summit music CDs
$9.69 Since Chris Young appeared on the "Nashville Star" television program in 2006, he's been on a roll. After signing with RCA he had a hit with "Drinkin' Me Lonely," his first single from his self-titled debut recording. Likewise, the two singles that have preceded the release of THE MAN I WANT TO BE in 2009 haven't done too badly either, getting plenty of play on radio. While Chris Young's sound is firmly in the contemporary country camp, it's also a lot more hardcore honkytonk than it is the refried '70s rock clichés that plague the genre. Part of that is due to his big booming baritone voice that rings as clear as a bell in this mix. (Think George Strait-meets-Josh Turner.) The other part of his appeal is the use of a relatively small group of musicians, giving the disc a more organic sound than a lot of what's out there. Young also has a lot of respect for tradition: "Rose in Paradise" is drenched in fiddles, mandolins, and acoustic guitars. It's a country-styled blues and features no less than Willie Nelson as a duet partner. The final track on the set is a moving cover of Tony Joe White's "Rainy Night in Georgia." Its beauty lies in its arrangement; his reading of this classic ballad is utterly tender and believable, accentuanted by a sparse, stripped-down production. And rather than stick with his trademark baritone, he stretches his vocal range--including a mean falsetto--to the brink and still pulls it all off.

| | Canadian Brass All You Need Is Love CD (1998)
$9.09 On the cover of 'Sergeant Pepper' the Beatles masqueraded as a brass band and now the Canadian Brass have returned the favor. Given the obvious attractions of such a program it is not surprising that the kings of the classical-pop crossover should want to meet the Beatles, only that it took them so long to get around to it. Throughout the catalog of John Lennon and Paul McCartney's tunes there is an undercurrent of classical influence, made explicit in some of the arrangements by their producer George Martin, and several of the most famous examples, "Yesterday," "Eleanor Rigby" and "She's Leaving Home" are to be found here. For the most part, the selection focuses on the more sweetly sentimental McCartney material and though it might be said that their attempt to capture the funkiness of Lennon's "Come Together" finds the Canadians reaching a bit, "I am the Walrus" is actually quite amusing. The fine and somewhat fancy arrangements by Christopher Dedrick are delivered with the panache and finish one expects from the Canadian Brass.

$11.89 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
This isn't Sutton's tribute to Sinatra, although all the material here was recorded and made famous by him. Instead, it's her working through the nooks and crannies of his songbook, and bringing things out and putting her own particular polish on them. It could be something with strings, such as "What'll I Do?" or the intimacy of "I'll Be Around," which is as much a plea as a reassurance and resignation. Her version of "I Think of You," whose melody comes originally from Rachmaninov, is gloriously subtle, the emotion as softly drawn out as the syllables. "I Could Have Told You" offers comfort and a shoulder to cry on, a gentle embrace that's almost a whisper in Sutton's hands. The music here is at its best when the orchestra keeps away -- they simply become overkill, the too-sweet icing on an already-delicious cake. Perhaps her biggest test, though, comes at the end of the album, tackling "Fly Me to the Moon," followed by a medley of "Last Dance" and "Dancing in the Dark," taking on some of Sinatra's most famous pieces. While on the former Sutton doesn't always dig to the absolute heart of the song, the arrangement is stunning, with some outstanding piano from Christian Jacob that frees the songs from its '50s shackles. Sutton does sparkle on the other piece, however, especially "Dancing in the Dark," where the orchestral contributions are kept to a minimum, and the tracks swings in a minimalist fashion, Sutton's voice imbued with the magic of the night. The album might have been inspired by Sinatra, but in her own way, Sutton has gone beyond her inspiration. ~ Chris Nickson

He then moves to Montreal and enrols in the Classical Music program at College Marie-Victorin. Besides studying classical piano, he also explores the world of jazz piano with François Bourassa. He plays with several of the area's Big Bands and takes part in four musical comedies either on keyboard, piano or as conductor. The following year, he leaves the path of classical piano to begin a bachelor's degree in Jazz Piano Interpretation at the University of Montreal. He has the great opportunity to travel around the world twice. In 2001, he meets Laureen Niamesny a writer-performer from Albuquerque New Mexico with whom he forms a partnership as composer, arranger and orchestrator. Some of their pieces are performed by the Coral Spring Pops Symphony of Florida. Laureen on Patrice: "What a perfectionist! He has the natural ability of infusing each song with his own special life and magic. Working with Patrice has been a unique and rewarding experience". His composition style, much like his piano style, is tainted with much lyricism and expression. He plays with images...
