| | Asguard Wikka CD Asguard Discography of CDs
With so many heavy metal and progressive rock bands called Asgard out there (at least ten so-named acts have produced recordings since the early 1970s), Belarus quartet Asguard's erroneous spelling seems more like a brilliant idea than a faux pas. Equally worthy of distinction is the group's unusual fusion of extreme metal's various subgenres, which, although black and death metal dominant throughout typical tracks "The Vision of Dream" and the two-part "The Black Wandering of Death" (which combine scratch-throated voices and cold guitars with Behemoth-like percussive precision) frequently detour into unexpected side alleys. First and foremost, there's a certain retro feel reminiscent of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal pervading many of the songs featured here, as well as the band's cover of Judas Priest's "Leather Rebel"; and, thanks to lead guitarist Andrey Tselobenok's six-string wizardry, Wikka's introductory instrumental title track boasts a neo-classical lesson straight out of the Yngwie Malmsteen school. If only one had a clue as to which songs were which, since, to go with main man Alexander Afonchenko's mostly unintelligible vocals, the This Dark Reign reissue of Wikka frustratingly messes up the track listing, and fails to name any of the six bonus extras and demos. This gripe aside, Asguard's music speaks for itself (and if you like a little mystery with your metal -- hey, all the better!) and is sure to interest fans of unusual heavy metal born of exotic locations. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

| | Kiss Destroyer CD (1976) Remastered
Wikka CD music
$7.85 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio at Sterling Sound, New York, New York.
Before DESTROYER, Kiss' studio albums were only moderate sellers. But the band's concerts were selling out regularly, and 1975's ALIVE! album had gone gold, putting Kiss on the pop map. DESTROYER, on which they teamed with Alice Cooper producer Bob Ezrin, was the breakthrough that finally got Kiss' grandiose rock ideas down on record.
DESTROYER is a chancy, ambitious album. It opens with a radio announcer reporting a teen's death in a car crash, followed by a snippet of "Rock And Roll All Nite" (which had appeared ...
| | Nazareth Rampant CD (1974)
Wikka music CDs
$11.18 Nazareth's second album of 1974 finds the group tempering the four-on-the-floor hard rock attack they developed on Loud and Proud by working a surprising and effective Southern rock edge into the songs. The end result is an album that sounds like a crossbreeding of early AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd at their hardest rocking. Some of the country-tinged highlights include "Glad When You're Gone," a funny kissoff to an unwanted lover that pairs hillbilly-styled singing with wah-wah-drenched guitar riffs, and "Jet Lag," a tongue-in-cheek look at life as a touring rock & roller that is driven by some. However, the finest song in this vein is the powerful opener "Silver Dollar Forger"; this hard rocking tale of an outlaw racing home with the cops on his tail has a suprisingly elaborate arrangement and plenty of driving guitar riffs. It feels like the theme song to the great 1970s car chase movie that never was. Rampant also spawned a hit single and radio favorite with "Shanghai'd in Shanghai," a pile-driving rocker that works an effective stomping beat into its shout-along ...
| | Judas Priest Screaming For Vengeance CD (1982)
Wikka songs
$6.75 Also available in a 3-pack with BRITISH STEEL and POINT OF ENTRY.
In the early '80s, a new musical movement, dubbed "The New Wave of British Metal," swept across England. The conspirators include such heavy bands as Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Saxon, and Def Leppard, but Judas Priest is often credited as the originator and leader of the pack. Rob Halford's vocal histrionics and the dual guitar attack of K.K. Downing and Glen Tipton mesmerized metal-heads everywhere. While Priest had been together since the early-'70s, the band's big U.S. breakthrough came with 1982's SCREAMING FOR VENGEANCE.
Like most other metal bands that broke through in the early '80s (Motley Crue, Twisted Sister, etc.), Judas Priest took advantage of the then-developing video medium. MTV put the clip for "You Got Another Thing Coming" in heavy rotation, and the song became one of heavy metal's all-time classic anthems. Other album tracks, such ...
| | Loudness Thunder In The East CD (1985)
Wikka album
$9.69 Loudness was a Japanese hard rock quartet that had numerous hit albums in the 80's and early 90's. Thunder In The East reached number 74 on the Billboard charts in 1985. Wounded Bird. 2003.
With 1985's Thunder in the East, Loudness were faced with the daunting challenge of conquering heavy metal fans outside their homeland of Japan for the first time. Knowing that their early sound might prove a tad too heavy and complex for American audiences, the foursome rose to the occasion by dispensing their most melodic compositions ever. Yet, except for a few obvious examples, like "We Could Be Together," first single "Crazy Nights," and the power ballad "Never Change Your Mind," the band doesn't seem at all self-conscious about this transition. A few all-out ...
