5 stars Buckle up and hold on!!!
My first experience with Flyleaf was their live appearance on the Fall Brawl tour with POD and Staind in Amarillo, TX. Flyleaf brings a tremendous amount of energy both through their music and in person on stage. Their music is crisp and edgy, producing a technically solid foundation of sound to support Lacey's powerfully gripping vocals. Their live performance prompted me to purchase this album, then to find that I love every song on the album!

Will Sanctuary CD  (2002)

Flyleaf
CD $12.39  Audio Samples
"SANCTUARY" Will's much anticipated debut album finds the singer/songwriter in top form and breaking out with a collection of tightly woven songs that beg to be heard. Fused with elements of Drum and Bass, Garage, Pop, Electronica and R&B, the album takes you on a journey of intense emotions and picturesque landscapes of life through Will's eyes. From floor-thumping dance cuts like the title track "Sanctuary" to heartfelt, emotional and honest ballads like Lost in Your Soul and "Girl Named Kate" (Acoustic Version) "SANCTUARY" delivers Will's emotive and expressive voice and his ability to elicit different moods and feelings from love, to doubt, anger, bliss, and spirituality which singularly prove he is a true master of the craft. "This album has taken about three years to complete" says Will "and it was a personal journey that I needed to accomplish. My first love is music and to complete this album meant to me that I could do anything I put myself to." People tried to steer me in other directions, but it was my love of music that kept me focused and brought me this far. Music is what I hold on to as I move forward in my Journey. The 13 songs found on "SANCTUARY" are all a part of Will's unique and complex psyche. Along the way Will picked up some extraordinary players to round out the sound he wanted. Jason Nuccio and Billy Harkowsky (great pop songwriters) Ami Ortiz ( fantastic Vocalist and member of the 50's Girl Group "The Chantals" and collaborator Mike Degen (known in NY as one of the best independent producers available) whom, not only produced the album but tweaked most of the gadgets used to create Will's encompassing sound. "Working with these different people has helped me tremendously. I'm used to working by myself, but I have a new found respect for the differences that other people bring to the project." Will doesn't only bring himself to the table when working on projects, he brings his professionalism, determination and a willingness to try new things. Will has never been afraid to push the envelope and its apparent in accomplishments Will has achieved in his short but varied career. In 1997 Will joined an Electronic Pop group called Carol Masters as the lead singer. Within a few short months Will was on touring with the band opening for such acts as Anything Box and Modern English. In 1999 Will decided to start laying the ground work for his debut album "Sanctuary". With no corporate sponsors, Will financed his project alone. In 2002, Will was on stage performing and wooing new fans everywhere. He even wooed BUDWEISER into sponsoring him for one of his shows in New York City. One of Will's greatest accomplishments was his performance at Madison Square Garden and BBKing's in New York for the New York Film and Video Festival. Those performances have garnered Will and award for Outstanding Achievement.Whatever direction Will takes, it will be sure to lead him to the success he deserves. His gorgeous album SANCTUARY is just a testament to the multidimensional facets of Will's personality strength and ...

Mosaic Select: Tony Williams
Mosaic Select: Tony Williams CDs  (2007)

Flyleaf
CD $44.95
For the 24th Mosaic Select box set of reissues from the Blue Note vaults, series producer Michael Cuscuna has chosen five recordings in a seven-year span from 1985-1991 by drummer/bandleader Tony Williams. Note that this is not the complete Tony Williams on Blue Note, excluding his sessions after having left the Miles Davis Quintet, especially Life Time, Spring, and his sideman work with Jackie McLean, Eric Dolphy, and Sam Rivers. The complete latter-period group recordings included are Foreign Intrigue, Civilization, Angel Street, Native Heart, and The Story of Neptune. All are solidly in the modern mainstream post-bop mode, featuring the forceful, driving drumming of Williams, and all the sets feature the brilliant pianist Mulgrew Miller with Miles devotee trumpeter Wallace Roney. Tenor and soprano saxophonist Bill Pierce is paired on the sides except Foreign Intrigue. Ron Carter, Charnett Moffett, and Ira Coleman are the bassists, with Robert Hurst making a cameo on three tracks. These are individualistic, solid players, giving Williams the opportunity to not only jam with the best, but write music geared toward their personalized sounds and stances. Four of the five sessions were done in New York City; only Civilization was done elsewhere, in Los Angeles. Of the 38 selections, four are unaccompanied drum solos, and three are covers or standards. There are a few waltzes and no ballads as one might expect, though Miller's piano rhapsodically introduces two tracks. The remainder are original compositions of Williams. Give the drummer some credit, as a total musician and composer. The recordings are programmed in chronological order, starting with Foreign Intrigue, which likely is overall the best of the lot. Williams introduces some of these compositions and utilizes his acoustic kit with a drum machine and electronic drums. There are some classics on this one, like the title track, the hard bopper "Clearways," the cool bluesy "Takin' My Time," and the loping by-now standard "Sister Cheryl." Bobby Hutcherson's presence on vibes truly uplifts this session, as does Donald Harrison's alto sax, the only alto on the compilation. Civilization also uses a bit of drum machine, but not much. The happy, cartoonish melody on "The Slump" is a melodic standout. "Mutants on the Beach" (part of the repertoire of Herbie Hancock's V.S.O.P. quintet tribute to Miles Davis that included Williams) and a hard bopping "Warrior" deliver Williams and his band at full force. The gorgeous, serene "Soweto Nights" is a piece everyone should revisit. Angel Street includes three of the solo drum pieces, while the highlights are the urgent "Dreamland" and the now-standard "Pee Wee" (written before Williams was exiting the Davis Quintet in 1967 and on the V.S.O.P. set list). Native Heart and The Story of Neptune fall off some in quality and ideas, the former lacking somewhat in compositional depth, and Neptune being more of an attempt at the conceptual. The title cut of Native Heart swings easily and is tunefully attractive, but the record generally meanders melodically and is static rhythmically, save the slight time changeup on "Juicy Fruit." "The Story of Neptune" suite is thoughtful and provocative, but it isn't all that cohesive or memorable. Neptune does includes the non-Williams compositions -- a cover of "Poinciana," Lennon an Liner Note Author: Michael Cuscuna.
