After the tragic suicide of Joy Division's Ian Curtis, the band restructured. Guitarist Bernard Sumner, whose gift for combining the melodic with the hypnotic had been the band's cornerstone, stepped up to the microphone. The resulting debut MOVEMENT finds the group taking a brave step away from its unfortunate past. Preserved are Joy Division's dark edges--Sumner's guitar attack swerves deftly between funereal repetition and noisy bursts, while bassist Peter Hook continues to explore his instrument's upper registers. From the slow, deliberate build and melodic interplay of its opening moment, the mid-tempo "Dreams never End," MOVEMENT boldly states the band's more experimental, slightly less emotionally turgid agenda. That Sumner is trapped under the influence of Curtis is undeniable--at times, the resemblance is alarming, ...

Though some might argue that the Beatles' unprecedented evolution from British Invasion pin-ups to pop music visionaries began with BEATLES FOR SALE, RUBBER SOUL is without a doubt the first album to definitively put the Fab Four in the running for Greatest Band Ever. Virtually every aspect of the Liverpool quartet's incredibly diverse sound is in evidence here: the dark, irony-filled Dylanism ("Norwegian Wood," "Nowhere Man"), pop perfection ("In My Life"), the passion for classic tin pan alley balladry ("Girl," "Michelle"), and the love of good 'ol rock & roll music ("Drive My Car"). Peppered with nasty fuzz bass, exotic sitar, cartoonishly sped-up piano that sounds like harpsichord, ...

Barry Manilow Sings Sinatra CD  (1998)

What's Your Favorite Color?: Remixes, B-Sides & Rarities songs
CD $10.15  4 stars Audio Samples
SINGS SINATRA was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance. "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s). Barry Manilow has always been conscious of his historical pop roots, from Broadway to jazz. Witness 2:00 A.M. PARADISE CAFE, his surprise 1984 small-group outing with Gerry Mulligan. So it should be no surprise that Manilow has released his Sinatra album in the tribute-laden wake of the great man's demise. Though lushly arranged by such luminaries as Johnny Mandel and Don Sebesky, MANILOW SINGS SINATRA is a smartly produced, brisk affair of which the Chairman himself might have approved. Manilow is relaxed throughout and wisely makes no attempt to mimic Sinatra's jaunty persona on the swinging numbers nor the tragic loner of the ballads. He does shine on "Strangers In The Night" and "Angel Eyes," perhaps because their shifting changes are ...

5 stars Colourful!
This is the best version of Talkin' Bout a Revolution and the acoustic Solace of you is worth the money to pay for this CD. The most of the acoustic versions were only found on the japanese import DREAD or various cd singles. This is a must have for LC fans that never got a hold of the imports!
