With their unique blend of Latin music, hip-hop, R&B, and pop, Yerba
Buena made a big splash with their debut album, PRESIDENT ALIEN. While avoiding Rock en Espanol cliches, the follow-up, ISLAND LIFE, boasts a pan-Latin sound that bespeaks the musicians' familiarity with the traditions of Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, and more. The pace is generally frenetic throughout the album, and the vibe a steamy one, as percussion, horns, and guitar vie for attention on one percolating, polyrhythmic workout after another. Unlike many Latin acts that have made the crossover to a wider audience, Yerba Buena never seems to be pandering to the gringo market. Only a couple of tracks, the suggestive "Sugar Daddy" and the equally salacious "Bilingual Girl," feature English-language vocals, and there are no tacky rock trappings grafted on. The eclecticism of ISLAND LIFE depends most heavily on the
aforementioned variety of Latin musical roots, though there are
undercurrents of funk, reggae and, at one point, a bit of Fela Kuti-style Afrobeat. Uncompromising but completely accessible, ISLAND LIFE moves further down the inroads Yerba Buena made with PRESIDENT ALIEN.

In this dazzling epic from Akira Kurosawa, a petty thief named Kagemusha (Tatsuya Nakadai) gets saved from a death sentence because he resembles the warlord Shingen Takeda (also Nakadai). The warlord has been fighting two other leaders for control of 16th-century Japan and impersonators often take his place during battles to put him out of harm's way. Because of Kagemusha's strong physical similarities to the warlord, he's a perfect choice for a "shadow warrior." However, the arrangement suddenly changes when Shingen gets fatally wounded while watching a battle. Adhering to Shingen's final wish, the warlord's men keep the death a secret, and Kagemusha struggles to transform himself from a criminal into a leader.

Of the musicians who rose to prominence during the alternative country scene's 15 minutes of 1990's media prominence, the Jayhawks were at once the band that best exemplified what was satisfying about the new country rock scene, and a group that avoided the twangy clichés that became so large a part of what their less gifted peers were doing. The high lonesome melodies and evocative wordplay of Gary Louris and Mark Olson's fine songs suggested a country influence without forcing the particulars into the arrangements (a mandolin here and a fiddle there was enough), and though Louris' guitar work made it clear he'd listened to a few Neil Young albums, the Jayhawks' musical vision made as much room for pure pop and '70s West Coast sounds as rocked-up country.
