Produced by and featuring world-music star Manu Chao, DIMANCHE A BAMAKO showcases the talents of married couple Amadou Bagayoko (vocals, guitar) and Mariam Doumbia (vocals), who met at a Malian institute for the blind. While Amadou & Mariam have been making music together for decades, this album is their first high-profile international release, and they take full advantage of the attention with a buoyant set of French-language tunes mixing traditional Malian sounds with Latin rhythms, folk, blues, and reggae.
Amadou & Mariam: Amadou Bagayoko (vocals, guitar); Mariam Doumbia (vocals).
Personnel: Manu Chao (vocals, guitar, programming); Tiken Jah Fakoly (vocals); Roy Paci (trumpet); Francois Regis Matuszenski (keyboards); Laurent Griffon (bass guitar).
Spin (p.61) - Ranked #33 in Spin's "40 Best Albums Of 2005" - "Keening voices cling to West African roots against the drift of Chao's skittish lite-reggae lilt." Uncut (p.105) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Manu Chao, here helps them paint their Malian pop in global colours..." Dirty Linen (p.58) - "[L]ush, multi-facetted....[They] have a well-developed pop sensibility..." Mojo (Publisher) (p.58) - Ranked #9 in Mojo's "The 50 Best Albums Of 2005" - "Amadou & Mariam mixed Malian rhythms and Memphis grooves. And crossed right over." Mojo (Publisher) (p.104) - 4 stars out of 5 - "African Mod soul house funk album of the year so far." Dimanche A Bamako album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Dimanche A Bamako CD music
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock ...
| | CocoRosie La Maison De Mon Reve CD (2004)
Dimanche A Bamako music CDs
$12.25 An enchanting debut, CocoRosie's La Maison de Mon Rêve is a dreamy yet challenging confection of found sounds, folk-blues, trip-hop, girlish pop, and experimental recording and production techniques. The Casady sisters' breathy, slightly different, but equally lovely vocals circle each other atop delicately plucked and strummed acoustic guitars, chirping birds, and fractured beats, making for a sound that is hard to define outside of its own beauty and creativity. A strong Billie Holiday influence colors the sisters' vocals, particularly on La Maison de Mon Rêve's most accessible songs, but even then, CocoRosie isn't so much aping Lady Day as it is invoking her style in unique ways. Layers of crickets, birds, pianos, and intensely sweet backing vocals make "By Your Side" an unusually intimate and spontaneous-sounding, while lyrics like "I'd wear your black eyes/Bake you apple pies" give it a subversive, feminist angle. "Butterscotch" mixes ethereal sensuality ...
| | Bright Eyes I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning CD (2005)
Dimanche A Bamako songs
$10.79 In early 2005, young indie icon Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes) unveiled two full-length albums--I'M WIDE AWAKE, IT'S MORNING and DIGITAL ASH IN A DIGITAL URN. Whereas the latter proved to be a departure into electronic music, the former sticks to Oberst's established sound, which combines the urgency and heart-on-the-sleeve sentiment of emo-rock with twangy, down-home feel of alt-country and folk music.
I'M WIDE AWAKE begins with Oberst telling a story that morphs into "At the Bottom of Everything," a jangly, upbeat tune featuring My Morning Jacket's Jim James on backing vocals. Throughout the record, Oberst reaches nearly hysterical ...
