(10 Customer Reviews)
Plenty of SoCal punk diehards decried The Offspring to be "sellouts" when they leapt from cherished indie Epitaph to the major-label stables at Columbia Records. But one listen to this GREATEST HITS compilation points to a band that was never destined to stay underground for long. In crafting clever pop-punk that addressed the concerns of teen skate-punks everywhere, this California quartet cranked out radio-friendly cuts every bit as viable as anything peers like Green Day and Blink 182 were producing during the same time period. Social observations not only poked fun at suburban kids affecting inner-city mannerisms ("Pretty Fly [For a White Guy]"), but gold diggers ("Why Don't You Get a Job?") and the lost opportunities of a younger generation ("The Kids Aren't All right"). The sing-along choruses and irresistible bassline of "Self Esteem" succinctly paint an all-too familiar picture of lovelorn guys getting played by manipulative gals. And there's no denying the chunky, Middle Eastern-flavored hooks that made "Come Out and Play (Keep 'Em Separated)" such a ubiquitous presence on mid-'90s airwaves. A hidden bonus cover of The Police's "Next to You" tops off this superb compilation from one of the most successful and likeable acts of the mid-'90s punk-pop scene.
The Offspring: Dexter Holland (vocals); Noodles (guitar); Greg K. (bass guitar); Ron Welty (drums).
Additional personnel: Redman (vocals); Josh Freese (drums); Def Leppard (background vocals).

| | Future Sound Of London Isness CD (2004)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$13.69 Future Sound of London returned to active recording with The Isness, a record that trumpets a host of through-the-ages psychedelic influences -- from the Beatles to Gong to mid-'70s Pink Floyd to Spacemen 3 to the Chemical Brothers -- but does little to expand on any of those original inspirations. Early on, Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans begin trotting out the clichés; the opener, "Elysian Feels," has the back-masked strings of "Tomorrow Never Knows," a surprisingly AOR guitar solo, and a few Chemical Brothers breaks that don't sound very intriguing when dredged up eight years later. It only continues on "The Mello Hippo Disco Show," with a hippy-dippy vocal (one that fits the absurd title perfectly) floating over a series of funereal chords and the requisite Mellotron effects. "Yes My Brother" finds F.S.O.L. aping easy listening lynchpin Tony Hatch circa 1971 -- one of the influences not-so-curiously missing from the list -- but doing a surprisingly good job of it, even when the uncredited vocalist grasps for the Verve, but ends up in Simply Red territory. It's clear that Cobain and Dougans are still great producers; check out "Osho," an excellent, though rather obvious, piece of light blaxploitation funk grafted onto filmi strings. Too often, though, they're apparently interested only in referencing the past and sporting their rangy instrument roster: flügelhorn, glockenspiel, harp, flute, violin, cello, harmonica, etc. It's ironic that 30 years later, a record like this could make psychedelia seem as curmudgeonly as rock & roll seemed then. ~ John Bush
If it wasn't for mistakes, the lot of the compulsive record collector would be a lot less interesting, and in 2002, the Future Sound of London made a whopper. Promo copies of their album The Isness (originally released under their side-project name Amorphous Androgynous) were sent out prior to release. Reviews were printed. Review copies ended up in used record stores and on P2P sites. And then FSOL co-leader Garry Cobain ...
| | Fleetwood Mac Jumping At Shadows: The Blues Years CDs (2002) Remastered
Greatest Hits songs
$15.09 This British two-disc collection offers a rather unique look at the Peter Green-era Fleetwood Mac rather than just focusing on the band's output from 1967, immediately after leaving John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, to 1970 when Green left. The set is chock-full of fine studio material that documents the evolution of the band from a power trio to its Jeremy Spencer and Danny Kirwan incarnations. And while it's true that other collections have documented the band from this period very well, none of them has dug quite as deep into the live archives or revealed the subsequent Peter Green side projects of the time. Here are 36 tracks that offer stunning live renditions of Green's "Black Magic Woman," "Oh Well," the second part of the "Madge Sessions," and Spencer's "Stranger Blues," as well as an absolutely searing version of Kirwan's "Comin' Your Way." Given the budget price of this completely remastered set, these alone would have been worth the price, but in a sense it's only the beginning. There are numerous tracks of Green with musical running-mate Duster ...

Iâm positive you will be amazed if you have not heard him before.â--Steve Cropper (Booker T. & the MGs, original Blues Brothers Band) âRobâs CD sounds amazing and his performances are over-the-top killing!â--Will Lee (David Letterman, Fab Faux)Native New Yorker Rob Paparozzi is a special artist who sings and plays harmonica with just the right blend of verve and empathy on his first feature album Etruscan Soulânow available on the Honeydripper Records label. The front man with the legendary, globetrotting, Blood, Sweat & Tears and the popular Tri-State area Hudson River Rats is joined on this swinging and intelligent rock-blues-soul-jazz-r&b release by world-class talent. The supporting vocalists are the one-and-only Phoebe Snow, Vanesse Thomas, and Antonique Smith. Paparozzi says in the liner notes that these âskilled musicians help me paint the muse deep inside my âEtruscan Soulâ.â Itâs way more than a snappy album title. The phrase is defined throughout the 15 songs of the recording by the depth and clarity of the manâs singing and his harmonica playing. The special you-know-it-when-you-hear-it spiritâyes, Etruscan Soulâthat motors Paparozziâs music traces back many centuries to his familyâs origins in ancient Etruria, the west-central Italian country whose great civilization was eclipsed by Rome in the third century B.
